Its ridiculous how some people think about moving into a professional army in Finland. Strength of the new army would be only 20,000 men, you cant defend even a one city with that! Finland needs at least 150,000 men to defend its lands, otherwise there would simply not be enough troops to defend anything except the southern Finland, which could easily be sieged and destroyed.
Modern warfare is different, but we would still face at least 400,000 men in a serious war situation.
I think that if something was to go down, it'd go down so fast that we just wouldn't have time to mobilize. The FDF strenght currently is somewhere below 30 000. If enlistment would become a carreer option, the number could easily be 50-75 000. An army based on manpower is not a viable solution anymore, we need technology. Attack helos, ground attack jets and more armor to be manned by a professional military.
@gtikounaify Actually that is not right. Finland has so much forests that attack helos and ground attack planes are really not very useful. That´s who we have only fighters. Also because of thick forests, tanks are restricted to move only on roads, where they can easily be destroyed. So large amount of well trained infantry and large artillery units are est choice for Finland.
Conscription shouldn't be abolished either, it could be shortened to cover only the very basics for infantry. Compulsory 2 months during summer, and one during winter should be enough. If something was to go down, we might not have time to mobilize anyway.

"And I wondering WHY so many Finns believe Russia will attack Finland, WHY do you think we hate you or need your land ?? Stalin died in 1953, it is 2010. Hello !!!"
I have to agree with you there. It's absurd.
We're definitilely not expecting an attack or anything like that. Yeah, ok, we have a certain commmon history that makes us a bit cautious, but believe me,we don't consider you as anemies. And this is coming from a finnish sergeant (who works in the defense industry :D ).
@rantasta No, they won't. Nobody is gonna do anything. It's idiotic for two countries with modern militaries to fight each other. Even the winning side will not have a net gain from the conflict due to the extremely high cost. Where did you hear that from anyways, your drunk friend? :-p
I'm Russian, I'll answer - if F. joins NATO R. will be pissed. That's it. Nato is a stupid choice for Finland itself, we don't care. Finland seems to have better army than whole NATO, where except USA the rest are just rats. They afraid to provide few soldiers for NATO in Afgan - guess how they'd defend each other in case of real war? And I wondering WHY so many Finns believe Russia will attack Finland, WHY do you think we hate you or need your land ?? Stalin died in 1953, it is 2010. Hello !!!
@ihave1 The main reason why we won't join NATO is because we don't want to have anything to do with the USA's endless stream of pointless wars. If Russia stays peaceful we have no reasons to join in future too.
@rantasta 1) I'll try to explain and you also have to consider how big asshole Stalin was. Poland did NOT get what it lost - it got different lands. It lost West Belarus and West Ukraine, instead Russia cut off a piece of Germany and gave it to Poland. Baltics were not "given back" either - Stalin didn't leave them independent (unlike Finland), they were incorporated into USSR and got independence with breakup of Union. Stalin left behind so big mess that even today we have many problems with it
@rantasta 2) Stalin loved to change map: added S.Osetia and Abhazia to Georgia, they never wanted to be Georgia, so after USSR broke up they had war with Georgia (1992), and only Russian peacekeepers prevented another war there. Year ago Georgia attacked to re-take and bombed Osetia's only city - Tshinval. Russia kicked Gerogians back, now O and A will stay independent. Stalin added part of Russia to Ukraine - problem there. He cut off Moldova from Romania - another problem.
3) Problem of giving back is not a problem with Finland, problem is chain reaction. There are about 60 territorial claims of different nations, if to satisfy them Russia will disappear. Finland wants Karelia, Latvija - Abrene, Belarus - Smolensk, Ukraine - Kuban, China - south Siberia, Japan - Sakhalin, Poland - a lot, Turkey - Crimea, Azeri - Caspian sea, Germans - Konigsberg. Finland should do more business and Finnish cultural influence in Karelia, and in the future - who knows
@rantasta On top of that, what that other dude said which merely explained the geographical aspirations and politics of Stalins soviet union. The dude also killed tens of millions in his work camps and other projects he needed free labour during the ww2. To put it in pespective hitler "only" about 7million this way. So Stalin was really a bad dude.. But since victors write the history, somehow he isn't that dispiced at least when compared to hitler and the stigma of his name and actions..
@ihave1 Hey don't diss Canada! We're part of NATO and our soldiers are doing some of the toughest fighting in the country - around Kandahar. Our snipers set world records for long distance kills :-D
@ihave1 NATO’s relations with Finland are conducted through the Partnership for Peace framework, which Finland joined in 1994. NATO and Finland actively cooperate on peace and security operations and have developed practical cooperation in many other areas.
@ihave1 I'm from Finland and yeah, my thoughts exactly! We don't have any reason to fight each other! Our countires relationship has advanced so much, that we are friendly toward each other. Even the tourism for Russia comes mostly from Finland and other way around. I have lot of Russian friends and yeah, if there will not come any other "crazy leaders" from our countries, there will not be war. If Finland would join NATO, it would only mean that we would have to fight in random conflicts.
@lintu25 - 1) I don't decide for rus. gov. 2) 'giving back' Vyborg - to Novgorod or to Sweden, they fought for it for centuries? How about giving Sweden its lands back too than, Finland? You don't seem to realize - had Peter 1 didn't take Finland the Finnish nation and language would not exist today. In Swedish empire Finns were peasants and very small ethnic group, Swedish was lang of education, by today Finnish would completely dissolve - it happened with many tribe languages worldwide.
@lintu25 Mitäs me sillä maalla enää tehtäis ? On meillä tilaa täällä ihan riittämiin.
@aksikl Oletko koskaan ajatellut kulujen lisäksi hyötyä? Pakkoluovutettujen alueiden palautuksen vastustajat aina käyttävät sanomaasi. Tästä on ollut ihan tutkijaryhmä miettimässä asiaa. Heidän selontekonsa mukaan alueiden palauttaminen tulisi maksamaan kymmenen vuoden aikana 6-8 mrd. euroa. Rakennuksien ja puuston arvo on yksinään jo yli 10 mrd. euroa, mikä sinänsä jo varmistaa positiivisen tuloksen viivan alle. Tästä löytyy ihan kunnon laskelmiakin. Sanomasi ei ole ollenkaan totta.
We are not joining Nato nor are we trusting russians any time soon. You must look at this from our perspective. Soviet Union tried to invade us = We don't trust you guys.
@ZounaaS It does affect our relantions sadly... Nato is led by the americans which are the so called "enemy" to russians. So if Finalnd joins to NATO it would mean that Finland has joined the enemy's right? Atleast that's how i see it? :o Btw im finnish not Russian but i think this is the way Russia sees it? Russia and USA don't like themselves so much.. Correct me if i arez wrong :p
@ZounaaS ".. NATO is our only choice. And why do you care so much? Its our decision and should not affect to our relationships at all.." It sure IS your decision, obviously. But whatever decision man or country makes it ALWAYS affects relations with everybody else. Say, you're making a decision to become a criminal, or gay, or drug dealer (no direct correlations with NATO-Finland, just an example). Do you really believe people will not treat you different once they know? Same with counties.
@ihave1 Russia will always be Russia you see. I don't think either Sweden or Finland will like Russia any time soon. conflict between our nations and peoples is in our blood I guess : /
@termometen I really don't see it in our blood - as an example Russia and Germany were switching from friends to foes many times. And if you look into history you probably want to consider one simple fact - if Rus. emperor Peter I did not take Finland from Sweden and ended Swedish dominance Finnish nation and language would not exist today at all - Swedish was a language of school books, Finnish (language of peasants than) would just gradually disappear as many local languages worldwide
@ihave1 Yeah, Canadian troops have proved some of the best in the world. We have a major contribution in Afghanistan, and would gladly help our allies. I respect Russia, but ignorance is still no excuse no metter where you are.
@ihave1 The basic thing is that pakistan, india and China are rising. And the as far as i know the situation is going to go like this. Russia will join the Europe because it's afraid of pakistan and India. Not certain but i think so.
@ihave1 Love your comment :) We are just little bit paranoid when we have a big nationalistic neighbour. Also the the drunken russian tourist who scream that "We are coming" doesnt help. But then again we Finns do that when we are drunk and abroad also so...xD Then again I played WoW in the same guild with these Russian guys and it would be hard to believe us meeting on the front. "Yo Fangtooth why the fuck are you shooting at me!?!" "For the LULZ!!!"
@ihave1 How about returning our land then. That would be something which would build the trust between Russia and Finland. It would also show that Russia doesn't need Finnish land and Finland doesn't need NATO. What would Russia really lost in that? I think it would win more than lost.
@ihave1 That's funny, we Brits were the first country to have special forces. Our SAS has set the standard for anything from small unit tactics to hostage rescue...too bad your Spetsnaz couldn't learn quickly enough ;-)
And I actually have a fond respect for Russia, I have no idea why you would be angry with us other than the fact that you don't have a claim to the entire world.
Now stop acting like a pathetic keyboard warrior and grow up.
@ihaterobbie123 Not trying to diminish SAS, but it started in 1941, even USSR had special forces in early 30s and first paratroop units (Italy followed), so no way Brits were 1st or even 3rd. Like any other elite forces Spetsnaz had it's highs and lows, SAS had it's fair share of sucking too. I also don't really see Russia's claim to entire world - somehow I missed Russian bases in every European Asian and African country and Russian navy in every port - you sure you didn't mean USA instead?
@ihave1 No, you were complaining that if Finland joins NATO Russia will be annoyed, my answer to that is why? The only possible reason is because you think NATO presents a threat to Russia.
And special forces have been around for centuries. The UK was the first nation to organise a modern force specialising in unconventional warfare. Before the SAS we had the Lovat Scouts (1916). With the SAS we set the standard.
And yes, the US has a colonial attitude, but I was referring to your attitude.
@ihaterobbie123 Because Russia regards NATO as a pocket toy of USA, who with it's unlimited appetite and habit to dictate everybody how to live is 'not friend' at best. Except USA all NATO armies, combined, mean little to Russia. But neighbor Finland joining NATO would require relocation of thousands of tanks, artillery, missiles etc. - right now border with Finland is barely guarded and there is no heavy equipment there. US bases, that WILL appear in Finland (always do) will change it.
@rantasta Finland will not join NATO for three reasons:
1. making our equipment compatible with NATO standards is too fucking expensive, we would have to switch to prof military which would suck ass
2. Russia would be pissed. They wouldn't attack us, but they'd probably put some ridiculous limitations on their trade with finland (russia is finland's biggest trading partner)
3. if russians invaded, nato wouldn't fight for us, they'd reinforce the Finnish-swedish border and leave us to fight alone
The whole point of NATO is that an attack on one of it's members is an attack on all of it's members. If Finland was to join NATO and get attacked, NATO would be obliged to help, at what magnitude tho remains a question. If NATO was to left one of it's members stranded, the whole alliance would collapse like a house of cards.
I wouldn't say the equipment issue to be an actual issue. There are countries with ill-equipped (and soviet equipped) militaries in NATO already.
@gtikounaify they would still just reinforce the tornijokilaakso (finnish-swedish border). I mean, 130km vs. 800km ?? sure, they'd probably send some spec ops to fight with us, but i'm not convinced. It's still way too fucking expensive for a country that''s prectically dependent on russo-finn trade and nokia
Switching to a professional military tho would cost a lot, but then again the conscription system we have today is based on that wwII era thought of superiority in men. Not to mention that the conscription system, wether we like it or not, discriminates men. A middle ground should be found there, what that would be, I have no idea.
Joining NATO would probably be catastrophical to our trade with Russia and we wouldn't gain trade partners from NATO countries either to supplement that
Why do people talk about nuking, that would be the stupidest thing they could ever do..
What's the point to nuke something you're going to invade? And also a 4.6million people city called st. petersburg is almost at our border.
Not even that if you think how far the fallout from tzernobyl accident got and multiply the fallout from nuking, one would think that it might be quite dangerous for almost all of their biggest cities at least near europe ?
that war would be very boring, since the armies of both countries are very defensive and the attacker would be severly underhanded. but in comparison Finland has larger reserves, better equipment in "forest warfare" (only Sweden's air force is better than finnish but, since bombing enemy that's hiding in forest isn't that effective, air force in that imaginary conflict is quite irrelevant) and also finnish soldiers are, on average, better than swedish.
@vzq93 If the scandinavian airforce were to be "united" we would have the largest air force in the europe(!?) so i heard , nice to know all the help we need close by. Stockholm-Helsinki Flight time with a jetfighter 2minutes ? :D
tältä videolta taas näkee kuinka suomen armeija valmistautuu uuteen toiseen maailmansotaan. hienoa, varmasti taas samaan tapaan metissä soditaan ja vitusti hiihdellään JOS sota tulisi. Typerää, todella typerää.
Why you guys keep rifles with nozzles up while sitting in trenches? Why don't you keep them inside, in order to prevent earth and dust to get inside rifles and make them non-operatable?
i cant wait til july 12. is there a different group for americas, cuz i speak perfectly but my spelling n reading are kinda on the low side. mesage me if possible cuz i really wanna kno.
@TownGrapez420 there's no different groups for people who have foreign background. At least in parola we didn't have. I think that doesn't make your intti much harder, it's pretty simple and if you even are motivated it should be easy. Ei muutaku hajottavia aamuja mosille, reservin korpraali kuittaa!
@jakethesnakelimited not entrily true. you can still nuke Helsinki, get rid of the head of the snake with a sneak missile launch, OR if you wanna make sure, nuke helsinki and bomb turku out of the map ^^. i bet the rest of the landscape is left relatively usable and drasticly easier to invade. but this is just one of many scenarios possible. The problem with our country is the fact its small, if anyone actually invades, we ourselves would sabotage the infrastructure, and start a guerilla war.
@mistbooster Finland has an anti missile defence system, anti air defence system, and an national army for defence divided for difrent purposes, guerilla war is VERY likely, but all this would go from stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, stage 4 each stage requires alot of casualties from the attacker, so to be honest even small country like finland can do ALOT when it comes to just defending our lands, but it is a fact that russians have superior amounts of gear, missilies & troops but the cost is 2 high
@famaz88 so unless they discover a massive diamond veins or gold foundings from finland, absolutely no one has no real reason to attack in finland because the land just isnt worth the costs... and i dont think theres anything so cool in finland other countrys would desire. unless Putin gets to know that tarja spreaded her legs to Bush instead of him finlands and russians relations could suffer... but a war is very unlikely even in this case.
@mistbooster Only reason that Russians would invade Finland, is that they want control in Baltic Sea... And if they nuke Helsinki and Turku, Baltic is is useless to them.
@stoud23 And if they nuke something else than the general capital area, it wont help them any since the largest amount of population is in the south coastline areas :)
Exactly, also looking at the Winter War, Russia would be reluctant to say the least in engaging the Fins again.
I mean, we outnumbered you guys 3 to 1, and you killed 5 times as many. Most Russians have concluded since that the Fins an honourable and most fearsome foe; one I would not want at least.
Besides the chances of a conflict between our nations is marginal; if we did engage in a war it would most likely be together again Islam, our rifles are almost the same too.
Yep. It is very Unlikely that never, EVER nuclear weapons would be use or any that will make the land unusable. A nuclear bomb could be blown in the air that it makes destruction but doesn't create as much radiation and creating that highly radioactive crater. The worst that might be done is exploding something to cause an EMP. Electromagnetic Pulse.
@legend9300 But then they wouldnt get anything out of the invasion, they would probably only nuke when their country is invaded and threatened and need to finnish the enemy of. Invading a country 'poff' is unessesary because then the whole invasion is for nothing.

Hello !!!
ihave1 1 year ago 58
@ihave1 The main reason why we won't join NATO is because we don't want to have anything to do with the USA's endless stream of pointless wars. If Russia stays peaceful we have no reasons to join in future too.
publicuser12345 1 year ago
@ihave1 but why cant russia give back the land that finland lost in ww2? but poland and the baltics you could give back but not the finnish lost soil
rantasta 1 year ago
@rantasta 1) I'll try to explain and you also have to consider how big asshole Stalin was. Poland did NOT get what it lost - it got different lands. It lost West Belarus and West Ukraine, instead Russia cut off a piece of Germany and gave it to Poland. Baltics were not "given back" either - Stalin didn't leave them independent (unlike Finland), they were incorporated into USSR and got independence with breakup of Union. Stalin left behind so big mess that even today we have many problems with it
ihave1 1 year ago
@rantasta 2) Stalin loved to change map: added S.Osetia and Abhazia to Georgia, they never wanted to be Georgia, so after USSR broke up they had war with Georgia (1992), and only Russian peacekeepers prevented another war there. Year ago Georgia attacked to re-take and bombed Osetia's only city - Tshinval. Russia kicked Gerogians back, now O and A will stay independent. Stalin added part of Russia to Ukraine - problem there. He cut off Moldova from Romania - another problem.
ihave1 1 year ago
3) Problem of giving back is not a problem with Finland, problem is chain reaction. There are about 60 territorial claims of different nations, if to satisfy them Russia will disappear. Finland wants Karelia, Latvija - Abrene, Belarus - Smolensk, Ukraine - Kuban, China - south Siberia, Japan - Sakhalin, Poland - a lot, Turkey - Crimea, Azeri - Caspian sea, Germans - Konigsberg. Finland should do more business and Finnish cultural influence in Karelia, and in the future - who knows
ihave1 1 year ago
@rantasta On top of that, what that other dude said which merely explained the geographical aspirations and politics of Stalins soviet union. The dude also killed tens of millions in his work camps and other projects he needed free labour during the ww2. To put it in pespective hitler "only" about 7million this way. So Stalin was really a bad dude.. But since victors write the history, somehow he isn't that dispiced at least when compared to hitler and the stigma of his name and actions..

In Swedish empire Finns were peasants and very small ethnic group, Swedish was lang of education, by today Finnish would completely dissolve - it happened with many tribe languages worldwide.

tupakki 10 months ago
@ihave1 That's funny, we Brits were the first country to have special forces. Our SAS has set the standard for anything from small unit tactics to hostage rescue...too bad your Spetsnaz couldn't learn quickly enough ;-)
And I actually have a fond respect for Russia, I have no idea why you would be angry with us other than the fact that you don't have a claim to the entire world.
Now stop acting like a pathetic keyboard warrior and grow up.
ihaterobbie123 9 months ago
@ihaterobbie123 Not trying to diminish SAS, but it started in 1941, even USSR had special forces in early 30s and first paratroop units (Italy followed), so no way Brits were 1st or even 3rd. Like any other elite forces Spetsnaz had it's highs and lows, SAS had it's fair share of sucking too. I also don't really see Russia's claim to entire world - somehow I missed Russian bases in every European Asian and African country and Russian navy in every port - you sure you didn't mean USA instead?
ihave1 9 months ago
@ihave1 No, you were complaining that if Finland joins NATO Russia will be annoyed, my answer to that is why? The only possible reason is because you think NATO presents a threat to Russia.
And special forces have been around for centuries. The UK was the first nation to organise a modern force specialising in unconventional warfare. Before the SAS we had the Lovat Scouts (1916). With the SAS we set the standard.
And yes, the US has a colonial attitude, but I was referring to your attitude.
ihaterobbie123 9 months ago
@ihaterobbie123 Because Russia regards NATO as a pocket toy of USA, who with it's unlimited appetite and habit to dictate everybody how to live is 'not friend' at best. Except USA all NATO armies, combined, mean little to Russia. But neighbor Finland joining NATO would require relocation of thousands of tanks, artillery, missiles etc. - right now border with Finland is barely guarded and there is no heavy equipment there. US bases, that WILL appear in Finland (always do) will change it.
ihave1 9 months ago
@rantasta yes they will raise customs duties! but never war
napalm4574 1 year ago
@rantasta Finland will not join NATO for three reasons:
1. making our equipment compatible with NATO standards is too fucking expensive, we would have to switch to prof military which would suck ass
2. Russia would be pissed. They wouldn't attack us, but they'd probably put some ridiculous limitations on their trade with finland (russia is finland's biggest trading partner)
3. if russians invaded, nato wouldn't fight for us, they'd reinforce the Finnish-swedish border and leave us to fight alone
XIIIphobos 1 year ago
@XIIIphobos and Pro-military costs bloody mutch more than conscript service whit less gained from it because conscript can killelite whit 1 bullet
juispurg 1 year ago
@XIIIphobos
There are countries with ill-equipped (and soviet equipped) militaries in NATO already.
gtikounaify 1 year ago
@gtikounaify they would still just reinforce the tornijokilaakso (finnish-swedish border). I mean, 130km vs. 800km ?? sure, they'd probably send some spec ops to fight with us, but i'm not convinced. It's still way too fucking expensive for a country that''s prectically dependent on russo-finn trade and nokia
XIIIphobos 1 year ago
@XIIIphobos
Switching to a professional military tho would cost a lot, but then again the conscription system we have today is based on that wwII era thought of superiority in men. Not to mention that the conscription system, wether we like it or not, discriminates men. A middle ground should be found there, what that would be, I have no idea.
Joining NATO would probably be catastrophical to our trade with Russia and we wouldn't gain trade partners from NATO countries either to supplement that
gtikounaify 1 year ago
@gtikounaify i don't give a fuck about the discrimination, army's the place where boys become men.
true, if we joined nato, our economy would collapse since the trade with russia pretty much IS our economy.
XIIIphobos 1 year ago
@XIIIphobos
Joining NATO would require a general vote, and I just don't see that vote passing in the next 10 years.

What's the point to nuke something you're going to invade? And also a 4.6million people city called st. petersburg is almost at our border.

i rly want to now if finland could win over sweden in war
rantasta 1 year ago
@rantasta
that war would be very boring, since the armies of both countries are very defensive and the attacker would be severly underhanded. but in comparison Finland has larger reserves, better equipment in "forest warfare" (only Sweden's air force is better than finnish but, since bombing enemy that's hiding in forest isn't that effective, air force in that imaginary conflict is quite irrelevant) and also finnish soldiers are, on average, better than swedish.

legend9300 1 year ago
@legend9300 that's true but not very likely. The point of invading would be to gain something productive, not just a nuclear wasteland.
jakethesnakelimited 1 year ago 21
@jakethesnakelimited not entrily true. you can still nuke Helsinki, get rid of the head of the snake with a sneak missile launch, OR if you wanna make sure, nuke helsinki and bomb turku out of the map ^^. i bet the rest of the landscape is left relatively usable and drasticly easier to invade. but this is just one of many scenarios possible. The problem with our country is the fact its small, if anyone actually invades, we ourselves would sabotage the infrastructure, and start a guerilla war.
mistbooster 1 year ago
@mistbooster Finland has an anti missile defence system, anti air defence system, and an national army for defence divided for difrent purposes, guerilla war is VERY likely, but all this would go from stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, stage 4 each stage requires alot of casualties from the attacker, so to be honest even small country like finland can do ALOT when it comes to just defending our lands, but it is a fact that russians have superior amounts of gear, missilies & troops but the cost is 2 high
famaz88 1 year ago
@famaz88 so unless they discover a massive diamond veins or gold foundings from finland, absolutely no one has no real reason to attack in finland because the land just isnt worth the costs... and i dont think theres anything so cool in finland other countrys would desire. unless Putin gets to know that tarja spreaded her legs to Bush instead of him finlands and russians relations could suffer... but a war is very unlikely even in this case.
famaz88 1 year ago 2
@mistbooster Only reason that Russians would invade Finland, is that they want control in Baltic Sea... And if they nuke Helsinki and Turku, Baltic is is useless to them.
stoud23 1 year ago
@stoud23 And if they nuke something else than the general capital area, it wont help them any since the largest amount of population is in the south coastline areas :)
stidukka 1 year ago
Exactly, also looking at the Winter War, Russia would be reluctant to say the least in engaging the Fins again.
I mean, we outnumbered you guys 3 to 1, and you killed 5 times as many. Most Russians have concluded since that the Fins an honourable and most fearsome foe; one I would not want at least.
Besides the chances of a conflict between our nations is marginal; if we did engage in a war it would most likely be together again Islam, our rifles are almost the same too.
ForImperium 1 year ago 4
@legend9300
T4mp10 1 year ago
@legend9300 and how many nuclear weapon countries have actually used strategic nukes, that have also been to war after WW2? smart ass.
russians are even less likely to get their name stained like U.S in WW2 by fighting like faggots.
ageofcrackpipe 1 year ago
@legend9300 ...why would Russia start a world wide nuclear war which would destroy everything on this planet...?
kaahaajaFIN 1 year ago
@legend9300 But then they wouldnt get anything out of the invasion, they would probably only nuke when their country is invaded and threatened and need to finnish the enemy of. Invading a country 'poff' is unessesary because then the whole invasion is for nothing.
str8erthanu 1 year ago
@legend9300 also the fins probably has a sophisticated anti ballistic missile system to shield them from Aerial Nuke attacks
