  • That isnt going to work well... Were the to trash cans connect the force of the water inst going to be enough to fill the other trash can (Over flow) Bes bet is to buy a professionally made one... But your video was very informative. It helps a lot Thanks! (Like and subscribe!) <--- Thats what im doing :)

  • i prefer home depot more than lowe's

  • This is a weird design. The overflow holes are useless, may as well just let the water over flow out of the intake. Why use an atrium grate? That's not going to keep mosquitoes out. Use a screen.

  • Okay, here are my improvements: First of all, use rectangular plastic bins instead of barrels since these look "trashy" (haha) in front of the windows; You would also see trash cans when looking out your window. Rectangular bins would fit under the window and would look neater. Also eliminate the angle on the downspout and have it go straight down into the first bin. If you need to, cut down that scraggly shrub on the end to make room. Finally, add an overflow hose to the first barrel.

  • I think this is going to be the next gardening project.

  • This is pretty simple, but they forgot about where the overflow will go. If you were to drill 1" hole near the top of the first rain barrel, an o-ring, silicone sealers with a fitting for a hose THAT would then make a nearly perfect system; as the overflow would have the capacity to be flowing AWAY from your foundation. You can buy mosquito cakes to put in barrels or use a natural mosquito deterrent like neem oil. Don't like the color? Be creative and paint them or build a fence around to hide.

  • There way too much stuff and way to many steps

  • I use two rainbarrels....this is great because you are using basic garbage cans....great video...you can just put a mosquito disc in the barrel each month to kill the eggs....

  • To send the water away from the house have 1 or 2 holes at the top with hoses attached to them.

  • good idea

  • I accepted your challenge and made a video of me making a rain barrel.

  • Lowes has a LOT to learn about building a good rain barrel. Mosquitos are going to get into those vent holes and lay larvae for starters.

  • Total cost for all this at lowes 900 hundred dollars

  • city water has chlorine in it, and i don't think plants like it too much. This is a good way to provide them water that is not treated.

  • Take it from someone who has lived in a house with rain barrels, there are disadvantages, namely:

--Your house appears to be surrounded by garbage cans

--During heavy rain, barrels will overflow quickly, concentrating massive amounts of water near the house, sometimes causing severe erosion.

--Mosquitos will breed in standing barrel water, infest the neighborhood and infuriate the neighbors.

  • Way too many relief holes in this setup. The key to a good rain barrel is to keep the sun out. If sun gets in the barrel, algae will grow like mad. If anything you should not drill holes into the lid for overflow. Drill one or two into the sides of the can and put in an L spout (facing down) so the sun stays out but the water can still overflow properly. Trust me, keep the sun out of your barrel.

  • ok, i looked up on the lowes web site,,, and tried to use the products that they suggest, even being fair and buying a cheaper drill and bit set... $243.10 without the drill and bits $305.04 with,,, wow,, i found numerous ready made barrel systems for much less,,,,

  • How does the second barrel fill up if there is no down spout attached to it, and the connection is at the bottom?

  • @ 4:20 it shows them being connected with a washer hose.

  • i will need to save money to pay for all the Lowes products....

  • The level in both tanks would be equal, rather than one tank filling up and then the second tank filling up.

  • 2:07 is he drilling backwards?!

  • Yeah, he is.

  • oh ya lol ,good i

  • The soggy basement can be fixed by going to Lowes and buying materials for a foundation french drain and a sump pump.

  • You're gonna need a much better system for you overflow. That's just going to dump the overflow right next to your foundation and before long your going to have a soggy basement. You need to get that water further away from your foundation. That's why the downspouts are there in the first place.

  • i like lowes

  • You need to have an over flow set up to take the water away from the foundation.

  • It`s not about so much about saving money as it is about saving water.

  • Water costs about a penny a gallon. How much rain water do you need to collect to break even on the cost of this project??

  • where I live water is free

  • Even better!

  • You don't know what your talking about. Go away. This rocks and saved me a ton of money.

  • "A ton of money"?? Come on...
