  • Wonderfully touching. I love when the when the Metaphor becomes the Words becomes the Metaphor.

I think of my Folks and their day... and my much older Brother and his... and my own...

And I can't listen to this without crying.

  • Gorgeous.

What an amazing songwriter & performer!

  • Way ta go Jesse... beautiful

  • Insert Justin Bieber comment here...

  • So great to see Jesse still has his beautiful voice and amazing songwriting skills. What a gift he is. For those who don't know, Jesse actually first "made his name" as an artist who expatriated to Canada during the Vietnamese war. He was later granted a pardon, or immunity, by the U.S. Government. But when he left here to go there, the move garnered much publicity, and LOTS of fans!! He holds a special place in my time and space, connecting old memories and old friends. Sing on, Jesse!!

  • What a beautiful tune! Great stuff.

  • A guitar, and a simple song, thats all it takes to touch your heart to the core. The words and tune will be remembered for its simplicity and thats what makes a memorable song. Thank you so much that they are still written Jesse.

  • bloody ripper

  • Thank you Jesse, just wonderfully beautiful, Cheers Billy ;)

  • What a world away from the campy send-ups of the doo-wop genre ! This really takes you back to that 50's teenage mindset that never went away.

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhh...... we are blessed.

  • sweet tune jesse. melodic, and carefree

  • I began playing Jesse Winchester tunes back in the 1970s. When I heard this one for the first time it struck me the same way every other one of his songs have--they touched my heart first, then as I heard it for the second time I find Jesse captures my fancy and wonder. He has the most perfect clarity of vision in each song. What struck me and listened to the recordings of old favorites is that his age and life experience have only added delicious texture like your momma's pie crust.

  • Ah the language of young (and old) love! Every generation has its own words for the same thing and this gorgeous song manages to tell the timeless truth...Doesn't the world need all kinds?! Bless the precious warriors and defenders that make possible the free expressions of our musicians and artists. I love music that can be both trippy and whimsical and yet really layered too. Deep bows James, you are a hero to your craft, and a balm to so many of the lonely and love-struck among us!

  • fa382/ haha. Your so fucking stupid man. So when you listen to this song, your mind goes.. traitor. Its just sad

  • Are the music and lyrics anywhere to be found? A remarkable song!

  • This song touched me.. simply beautiful

  • @fa382 That's so sad.

  • @sherbertscoop "Boo Hoo Hoo!" Cry me a river.

  • @fa382 : It's nice to see that there are still narrow minded Americans around to perpetuate hatred. To call Jessie Winchester a "Coward" for opposing an unjust war is to say you should not stand for your principles, and to follow a government no matter what their policies. Nazi Germany had too many people that did this. You can't follow governments blindly. Governments must be held to account and sometimes this takes more courage than to simply follow when you know what is being done is wrong.

  • @chicopucawaca Just like a Canadian puke to compare the United States to Hitler. Let me tell you something, pal...if we were truly like Nazi Germany, you and your ilk would have been enslaved by us a long time ago.

  • @fa382 He refused to sacrifice his life in the service of a cause he believed to be unjust. He refused to kill other human beings on command. If Jesus had been conscripted to serve as a soldier and refused, would that make Jesus a traitor and a coward?

  • @LanceAnderson77 Jesus proved his bravery by dying on the cross for your sins. Jesse's a coward because he ran from his solemn duty because he feared the physical danger of combat.

  • @fa382 what you do not understand is, for some, the most courageous act is falling, completely, without reservation, in love.

So good luck with your tortured man,

for you he is the boss.

But i saw some time ago,

he got down off that cross.

    Now he sings another song,

    sweet as a mourning dove,

    no more Christian soldiers,

he sings his songs of love.

  • @fa382 I find your narrow minded views so typical of bigoted America. America is not the moral guardian of the world and it's intervention in Vietnam was morally wrong and deeply unpopual with many Americans.

  • @charlesgower Go fuck yourself, you pathetic shlepper.

  • @fa382 I don't believe anyone could be so full of hatred and anger. Fortunately most Americans are decent and educated people. But there are a minority of bigoted people like you that give the USA a bad name and reinforce the sterotypical American as being racist, ignorant and inbred.

  • @fa382 Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

  • MusicFog, thank you for sharing this. Wonderful song and wonderful performance from one of my very favorite musician/songwriters of ANY era.

  • beautiful

  • I saw a rerun of Costello's show the other night, and was frozen when I heard this song. It's perfect, nothing less.

  • @sgguitar77 You mean Elvis Costello covers this song? (I'm a big Costello fan as well as a big Jesse fan,)

  • @sgguitar77 Sorry, disregard my first reply to your post ... duh! At first I thought you were talking about watching video from a Costello concert; wasn't thinking about the TV show. I don't have cable TV, but I did get to see EC's show at a friend's house once. I'm so glad to hear that EC had Jesse on the show. Seems like I read once that EC is a Jesse fan.

  • The reason that this song is so touchy , the way how I see it is that we all remember the purity of our first love.

  • Simply beautiful.

I did the same watching Spectacle.

  • Simply one of the most engaging and beautiful melodies I have ever heard. Jesse performs it such an honest and meaningful way.... Excellent!

P.S. tHE MAN CAN DANCE TOO!!!!

  • I was the same way after seeing him on the Elvis Costello Show. Really teared up. Maybe because it talks about old folks of which I am and the loves you have lost through the years.

  • Beautiful song........ I`m ashamed to say that before i saw him on Elvis Costello`s show that i never heard of him in my 53 years.

  • i as well have not heard of this gem till he was on elvis's show.Nothing to ashamed of, more like pleased to have had him introduced to me.

  • Awesome stuff!

  • Not sure why this song brings a tear to my eye the lyrics arent overwhelming maybe its the way he sings it so soft the way does it just comes across great. Mr Winchester is a great songwriter..PS Did ne body notice that Necko didnt play during her songs owell. If u dont watch spectacle its great try to catch it!

  • I have all of his old albums and I saw him at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre in Halifax many years ago..In my mind he has always been a legend!

  • Yep, me too. Magic. Made me weep twice while watching the Costello Show twice, now I just wanted to play if for someone, thought this was probably safe since it's youtube, but sure enough: Tears again. And I'm not a big cryer. Wow.

  • Yeah. The crying effect was weird. I mean, I thought it was a good song and all, but then tears are just streaming down my face. And then you see a big tear going down Neko's face (on the Spectacle)

  • O my. I just caught his performance of this on Spectacle and ran downstairs to see it again. I don't know how long it's been since a song made me made me cry but I was in good company!

  • What a great artist... I saw the Spectacle show as well. He reminded me of a blend of James Taylor and Lyle Lovett.

  • I don't know what this song does for me, not yet. It probably epitomizes all the feelings I have for pretty girls and classic music. By that I mean Doo Wop, R&B and generally, good love songs. Pure and simple.

    Thanks Jesse.

  • Why isn't this guy as popular as Lyle Lovett? I should probably listen to his other material, but judging by this song, he's in the company of the greats.

  • how incredible to do a youtube search and find out how many other people were so similarly touched. in all the "cult of youth" of pop culture, it's amazing to see an artist his age transcend that. the very message of the song. how love transcends time. i hope he finds (or has found) the reward he deserves for tapping into such a great muse for this song.

  • This is incredible. D:<3 Just saw it on Spectacle a few minutes ago, it made Neko Case cry.

  • I saw the same show, This song just blew me away. Made me cry too!

  • Beat me to it Pongo. Never heard of him before. Touched by Neko Case's tears, on the show, as the song wound down.

  • @PongoPower Yea I just saw it it was great

  • I was speechless when I first heard this song on Spectacle...the whole show, as is the series, fantastic. How is someone so gifted as Jesse not a legend. If there is any justice in this world, this song will live on to touch others as much as it touched me.

  • back in the early seventies...I was a grad student living on a meager income...I found my first JW album in a thrift store...it was a 99 cent DJ copy of "Learn to Love It"..been a fan ever since. Saw him live at the Palms in Davis, Ca and it was awesome..thanks for posting! kat in cal

  • I had not heard of him before last night's Cotello, unfortunately. Thanks to the show I have discovered his wonderful lyrical ballads... His voice is so soothing.

  • Never heard of ths man before, but his performance of this song on Costello's Spectacle last night (16 Dec) was the most ourstanding musical performance I have seen in years.

  • I caught this last night on Spectacle. Seeing the others get choked up and the tear running down Neko Case's cheek was just awesome.

  • This simple love song is a treasure. Catch Jesse's performance of this piece on Elvis Costello's Specticle show on Sundance Channel. It's so beautiful and moves fellow guests Niko Case, Elvis and Sheryl Crow to get misty. I saw Jesse perform back in the 70's and hadn't seen him since. He's truly aged like a fine vintage wine.

  • I caught that wonderful performance you noted! Jesse was mind blowing his voice and acoustic guitar playing is on a level words can't describe..got to see it. I love Elvis' show! What a Gr8 format to view great musical artistry.

  • Anyone know how to play this? or have a tab?

  • Melts my heart. Wonderful. The CD is exceptional. He gets better as time goes by. Glad there is a loyal following out there and that he still wants to tour.

  • Thanks again,

    much appreciated,

    Cheers,

    Rudy

  • Oh...so lovely. Love Filling Station is wonderful! So many great songs!

This started my day off with a smile! Thank you very much!
