true, thorpe was very diverse in his distances. he even made the olympic final in 100 as well! phelps isnt really a fly legend, its just his best stroke, i would say hes a fly/free/IM swimmer, his diversity across strokes and distances is the reason he has more olympic gold medals than thorpe. i watched thorpe do IM once and he was pretty bad, no offence to him. I'm a free swimmer as well and i do distances from 200 to 1500.

You're just nuts. Thorpe never would've beat phelps in 2008. Thorpe peaked in 2004 and Phelps was the world record in 2008 in Beijin'. Van den hoogenband withdrew from the 200 freestyle event in 2008 in Beijin' to focus on the 100 freestyle coz he thought he didnt have any chances of beating phelps so shut your fuck up. Thorpe quit for two reasons: 1. He peaked in 2004 2. He knew Phelps would've replaced him as the world's best swimmer.

Ian Thorpe was also one of the best backstrokers but afetr he qualified for the world champs in the 400m freestyle he decided to focus on his freestyle and in 2003 he won a silver medal in the 200m IM and he won a olympic bronze medal at the olympics for the 100m freestyle and also won a gold medal at the world championships in the 800m freestyle. With a little reasearch you can see that everthing you have said and be contridicted with a little reasearch.

no i dont do any research , already knew all that .. frst of all our argument is weak about he also goo at other strokes... well he didnt win anything.. 800m a) is not included in Olympic most swimmer wont train on that , b) it's still mid distance .. how do you know Biderman cant win 800 with a little train ? sorry i know you make him god status there in australia . to me Hooganband was a better swimmer at that time even WITHOUT the suit.

YOU sound STUPID. Phelps won 8 gold medals in Bejiing. 5 Golds in Athens. He a stud in all strokes. Ian Thorpe is a legend in his own right but all you idiots that say Thorpe is better you really have no point. Can we say Thorpe was better in free? okay, maybe but even then...count the golds, look at the records and let also look at the reality that he dominates the IM which, IMHO, means you are the best overall swimmer. Thorpe is one of the best ever but Phelps IS the best ever.

swimming smart is the name of the game at that level. It was Bernard's fault that he went out like he did, he tightened up at the end b/c of it. Bernard is faster, but he made a massive mistake in swimming right up the middle of his lane. He should have moved to the left and taken it out at a little less effort.

True. Ian said in an interview that he was getting slower in competition, so he probably peaked around Athens. Athletes are peaking at different ages now, and while the old philosophy was that anyone over 22 was way too old to compete, we now have some of the best Olympians hitting late 20s or even older. Jason Lezak swam the fastest 100m freestyle split in history in Beijing, and he's 32. Dara Torres took two silvers, and she's over 40. Brendan Hansen is 28. It all depends on the athlete.

Yeah but I think what you dont know or what you didn't bother on checking out is the reason Ian Thorpe hasnt been swimming is because he had to retire due to his health and some of the medicine used to help his condition is on the banned list of drugs so he hasn't had the chance

If Ian Thorpe didn't get sick and retire, he would have beaten Phelps again in Beijing. Phelps didn't have to compete against Van Den Hoogenband or Ian. I love Michael Phelps, but Ian Thorpe is definitely the better freestyler.

You're just nuts. Thorpe never would've beat phelps in 2008. Thorpe peaked in 2004 and Phelps was the world record in 2008 in Beijin'. Van den hoogenband withdrew from the 200 freestyle event in 2008 in Beijin' to focus on the 100 freestyle coz he thought he didnt have any chances of beating phelps so shut your fuck up. Thorpe quit for two reasons: 1. He peaked in 2004 2. He knew Phelps would've replaced him as the world's best swimmer.
