  • Considering I only started listening to Defeater yesterday, I feel as if they're one of the most emotional bands out there, without being really shit. The songs is just amazing.

  • This song is possibly the most creative song I've ever heard. The snare resembles the train, the minute of silence at the end represents a minutes silence for the dead.

  • I came on here because I thought the song was broken on my ipod, then I realised why it stopped, so good.

  • Someone knows how do they play the end live? (do they even play this song live?)

  • The snare slowly crescendoing was the train. How freaking creative was that?! :O

  • One Word. Raw

  • ...The street I live on is named White Oak. XD

  • this song relates to the song debts off their first album travels. except debts is from the point of view of the person who's being spoken to in this song. its cool how their albums are like a big story.

  • This song is amazing. I love this whole album. I remember freaking out because, I didn't know why the song just cut off. Now I know why and I'm all like "Damn... That's crazy deep". <3

  • saw them live yesterday... they were awesome!

  • @TheJkirkwood If only they were to play White Oak Doors live :(

  • I was about say "fami....what?" intense! It sounded like a train and I was like holy! You can picture the song happening...

  • i feel like im watching a movie listening to this album. great stuff

  • oh, and i suggest listening to beggin in the slums...

  • Deep...

  • First I've heard of this band. Pretty cool. Can somebody straighten out the story for me? He kind of throws out every family member there is in the song. The singer and the man are father and son? Brothers? And at the end the guy on the tracks takes the gun from him and tries to kill the singer? I'm pretty confused. Either way, great song, definitely nice to hear something fresh.

  • @SlappaDaBass18 The whole story goes throughout the Defeater discography. I'd listen to it all...in one night! :P

But, the singer & the man are brothers. The brother killed his father earlier in the story, and the singer swore to get vengeance. So, in this song, hes trying to get revenge on his brother.

It also talks about the mother, who was a drug addict & died because of it. :o

Hope I helped! If you need any more clarification, send me a message :D

  • this is powerful, respect to this guy and band.

ive been throught plenty of crazy shit in my life but this is naarly.

    respect.

  • This is wow, After hearing Brothers & this, woah, The way he dies, On the tracks, Just like in Brothers he seen the train comming & swore it was out for him.

This band is pretty fuckin cool.

  • @SamsonOff7 yea dude thats the same song i always think of too by them when listening to this song lol

  • Seems like a song I would write. Fucking love this band.

  • i get chills every time i listen to this song, and the first time i totaly paid attention to the lyrics i cried.

  • oh man then end of this song gave me the chills

  • @thricethehero same it scared me kinda.. lol

  • brilliant

  • Defeater is amazing. and thats all your comments should say. dont like the genre, we dont give a fuck. we might not like yours, but we dont sit here and talk shit on it. its called respect.

  • or he shot him or he pulled him back the hold piont other than revenge is that you dont know

  • It's the case where shout/yelling gives anger while screaming/gutturals is monstrous. The anger and sorrow in this is heart breaking and sends shivers all over my skin.

  • @EpicW1n unlike any other hardcore band. Amazing

  • @EpicW1n sorry i failed at liking your comment

  • @EpicW1n its those certain yells, ugh those ones that scream of misery and despiration, no other feeling.

  • @EpicW1n you hit that spot on aye. its good to know someone else out there listens to defeater and just gets cold shivers. so much fucking passion

  • hardcore bands created breakdowns. bad brains anyone???

  • @CloverfieldMonster95 every 80s band anyone? agreed bro

  • i understand how the yelling can add to the emotion to the song, but i just cant listen to it. i wish it was sung, then it would be an amazing song for me.

  • At the end of the song is there a sound of the train in the backround, I know it gets louder but I cant quite make out if its a train aswell as a loud sneer..?

  • @MrLakai1993 I was thinkin' it was a snare imitating the sound of a train?

  • defeater reminds me of like have hearts lyrics mixed with ruiner instruments.

  • YOU SIT AND YOU STIRRRRR!

  • I honestly have not been this into a hardcore band since Have Heart. God I miss that band. I'm very glad Defeater is around.

  • in White Oak Doors. This is the breakdown Younger brother kills father, runs away from home Older brother stays at home with mother Mother dies from her addiction Older brother waits for younger brother to come back to kill him Younger brother comes back Older brother walks him to train tracks Younger brother grabs his gun, tackles him, and the train kills the older brother Younger brother then commits suicide by jumping off of steeple ED&SN - Older bro perspective Travels - young bro
  • ..okay. I just read the lyrics to every album. Travels is about the younger brother. He kills their father and leaves home. Empty Days and Sleepless Nights is about the elder brother. He gets married to a wife but she gets killed by a bookie that the father the younger brother killed owed debts to. At the end of Travels, the younger brother kills the older brothers, goes to a church to repent, then jumps off the steeple. Empty Days is from the elders perspective. He die when the train hits him

  • You have to listen to the acoustics. The younger brother dies. Headstone is the final song (older brother at his wifes grave)

  • alot of people refer to hardcore as being all the screamo metalcore stuff thats popular these days. i say fuckem this is hardcore and probs the best hardcore band ever! besides carpathian :P

  • Probably shouldn't have killed it by explaining the way the song ended :\

  • @heyitszack93 Lol I'm glad he did, I thought I had a messed up track.

  • amazing. especialy the end. i had to wait and listen to the silence. seconds only to las dispute - the last lost continent

  • whose the douche who disliked this???

ah, defeater, one of the best bands in the hardcore scene. if not the best.

  • so wait which brother dies? the older or younger one?

  • @PACZKii In the overall story, both of them. But in this song the older brother.

  • @flamingfartz okay thats what i thought thanks for clearin it up tho.

  • @flamingfartz Since you seem to know what's going on, can you exlain the whole story to me? I'm a little confused about which brothers do what...

  • @LCSCplaya7 the brother who originally had the gun dies

  • Comment removed

  • @LordHawk444 depends how you define hardcore

  • the pure emotion in his voice makes me shiver <3

  • i like how near end, defeater makes the music sound like a train getting closer.

  • the way the song cuts off is brilliant. these guys are geniuses and hardcore needs more of that.

  • I love how every album and song is joined to one another. For example, notice how the "coward" brother walks PAST the white oak doors in this song, but in the song "Cowardice" he walks THROUGH the white oak doors to find a resolution, (after killing his father and brother and leaving his mother in gods hands) eventually leading to suicide. The white oak doors of course being the chapel. I love how it is so well thought out. Hardcore is an understatement for Defeater. Its Art

  • Gotta love how the drums in the final minutes symbolize the train coming ahead.

  • hahh. u got it backwards. hardcore is yea. some breakdowns but simple ones. but heardcore is where the heart and soul comes from. the metal side is what makes it more technical, and it takes the simple breakdowns of hardcore, complicates them and makes them heavier.

  • the 1:50 intermissionish thing is so awesome

  • When I listen to this I feel like I'm there, excellent lyrics:)

  • DRUMS sound fucking AMAZING

  • THIS IS ART AND PASSION, FUNNY, HOW STUPID KIDS LOOKING FOR NEW BANDS WISHING THEY PLAY THE SAME BREAKDOWNS AND THE SAME STUPID LYRICS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, FUNNY GUYS!

  • @alvarg gtfo. stick to your Attack Attack faggotry.

  • @alvarg Good luck finding a breakdown in this genre. Sure the music is simple but this song is mainly focused on the story telling of the concept of this album and the previous. This is hardcore, not metal. I'd rather sit and listen to this than non stop breakdowns. The vocals are more of a yell which tends to show more emotion than the stupid gutteral shit you hear in like deathcore.

  • @alvarg Have you even heard any other Defeater songs?? (other than the acoustics) They are undeniably a hardcore band. A very good one at that. Constantly compared to massively popular hardcore bands like Verse, Have Heart, and Modern Life As War. Maybe you dont really know what hardcore is? i mean idk

  • @BlackRiff98 i think we have differen't opinions of what hardcore is , in my opinion metal is focused on guitar solos, metalcore is more about putting heart and soul into playing , hardcore, again imo is a basic beat , but decent guitar playing and breakdowns , metalcore does have breakdowns to but hardcore has more imo

  • @alvarg Lol If your thinking of newer metalcore then no way. That shit if chocked full of breakdowns and they're about as"heart and soul" as a bologna sandwich. If your talking about Strife and Integrity then mabye thats more valid, but hardcore (real hardcore) doesnt usually even have breakdowns. Some heavier hardcore bands wil have breakdown-ish moments (Terror, Nj Bloodline, Newer Madball) but the thoughtful melodic hardcore like Verse, HH and Defeater usually wont.

  • @BlackRiff98 Maybe he's thinking more like Madball, Lionheart, Terror, etc...

  • @alvarg 1:50 there's your breakdown, kid.

  • @Glitch667 lol funny how you called me kid and thats not a breakdown , i really dont understand your idea of a break down

  • @alvarg You clearly don't know what hardcore is then. Put down the deathcore CDs and go get some Verse, Champion, Trial, Modern Life Is War, and/or Have Heart albums and maybe then you'll understand what hardcore is. Metalcore is great and all (at least some of it is) but it's an entirely different beast than hardcore. Don't talk out of your ass, it makes you sound stupid.

  • @killxthexdogs i could care less anymore. i made the point in the last comment that i (personally) Do not like this song or this genre of music whether it is hardcore or not, i dont listen to Deathcore either, i listen to metal, it has a big impact on the way i feel. if according to you this is hardcore then i do not like hardcore or this band or by assumption will i like any of the bands that are mentioned, im over debating this, im not telling people this is shit im just saying i dont like it.

  • @alvarg Dude, if you seriously think this isn't hardcore you need to sort your life out.

  • @alvarg You're so fucking ignorant. You dont know shit about hardcore. Your tough guy weenie who moshes to look cool. Fuck you.

  • @BlackRiff98 PARKWAY DRIVE IS NOT as you say "guitarel shit"

  • @BlackRiff98 honestly i used to be huge into metal. i mean HUGE. and i never really liked hardcore.. but recently like you said i like to sit and listen to a story being told then just breakdowns over and over.

  • oh and your right his yell in this puts so much more emotion into this song.

  • @BlackRiff98 Gutturals can be an excellent tool in music if done properly and in the right context.

  • @alvarg He's not singing, he's yelling. Total difference and defeater is the new day age black flag. They show so much passion from this genre. Like bands like Coheed and cambria, Senses fail, and circa survive. They show so much art and emotional. And their lyrics are true not fake like shitty bands like Attack attack, Slayer, Attlia, or any of those crappy bands.

  • @calmwhisper yea i agree to that like i dont like attack atack never heard of them either or slayer or that

i prefer, lamb of god, bullet for my valentine , killswitch engage , which are good bands i dont say Defeater are a bad band im sure for there style there fine, but see in my opinion this is just a beat and crappy singing im sorry if this offends you this seem so emo tbh tho like all i thought about when i heard this was shooting myself, cutting myself it potrays very sad and emo

  • @calmwhisper i dont like emo style, sure me calling this emo is just like someone anti-metal calling metal emo and all i think is they dont get the rawr power in the music which i just dont feel in this im not all about breakdowns i do like a good breakdown but there has to be a good lead up, it can't just be boring breakdown - basic guitar playing - breakdown , because thats just potrays a lazy uninspired band who can't play there instruments very well eg, just in it for money not for the music

  • ill admit ill give them a 2/5 , 1 point for the ambient style rhythem 1 point for the lyrics, because it does come across that they put alot of heart and soul into them and i can repect that, the 3 last points get awarded for, guitar playing technique as well as drums and bass, overall feel of the song and the technique's used incombination to everything else, and singing which i felt was to (emo) ,

  • @alvarg In my opinion Defeater isn't anything near emo, but what if they were? You don't listen a band because of a label people put on it? Defeater is a band about emotions, stories and lyrics. If you expect a breakdown of monster like vocals, don't listen to this genre, you won't find it.

  • @alvarg

    Are you fucking serious man?

  • @PunkXRockXForever .... dude you read the full comment i did give it points for style and lyrics, the rest was gay imo dont take it to heart im not saying this style/genre of music is bad im saying that im not that interested in it , i prefer good guitar playing techniques and original ideas backed up with good drum beats

  • @calmwhisper you just used attack attack in the same sentence, while calling slayer shitty. you are a moron

  • @jackbrady86 I have to remember to sign out of youtube when I get off. My son responded under my name. I have never even heard this band before, but of course, everyone has an opinion.

  • @alvarg how could you even think about a breakdown with music like this? i love a good breakdown but there meaningless and all the same, real hardcore doesnt have breakdowns.....at all

  • @alvarg If you're only into hardcore for the breakdowns then you can just get the fuck out right now.

  • @famouszero1982 lol you need to chill god im over this arguement really. i could care less what other people like really. i dont like this its just boring (IMO!!!!!) my god im not trying to convert people jees

i just dont like it really and well i dont have to i like good guitar playing and solos, not just yelling, EXCUSE ME

  • @alvarg guitar solo's are for fags

  • @alvarg i believe what youre refering to as hardcore with breakdowns and shits is actually metalcore learn youre subgenres before you go out and listen to music and bitch.

  • @OhAaronBarton i dont know why you people are still going on about this my last comment was 3 months ago i COULD CARE FKING LESS ABOUT WHAT MUSIC YOU LIKE OR WHAT U CALL IT ALRIGHT? I KNOW WHAT METALCORE IS I LISTEN TO 99% METALCORE AND ILL BITCH IF I FKING LIKE IT

  • @alvarg Breakdowns are abused in metal, all thanks metalcore and groove metal.

  • @alvarg Oh and btw if you followed this band you would understand that every album is like a book. It tells a story. Look it up and maybe you'll find intrest.

  • thx for showing this stuff btw jason ;) just ordered all their stuff^^

  • thankyou for the explanation at the end.

  • Defeater is, to my eyes, the greatest hardcore band. Their melodies are so well constructed, and what about the lyrics. It is just pure art. Someone could read the entire cd lyrics and think he's actually reading a book. A book with a lot of content, but in only 10 pages. Incredible.

  • @TurcotteHxC092 agree 100%. couldnt have said it better myself

  • @BlackRiff98 Agreed.

  • @TurcotteHxC092 Right On.

  • This fucking song <3

Anyone who hasn't heard the whole album with lyrics won't understand it though.

  • @volcomish Hopefully this gives them reason to look deeper into this band and the album. Defeater is fucking art.
