@broregon Actually, if you remember the game, after Rosa joins, she's kidnapped once in Fabul. After Cecil rescues her from the Tower of Zot, she stays in the party for the rest of the game. Don't worry though.  There are enough video game love interests out there for your statement to apply to at least one of them, maybe.

I remember playing this a 2nd time. When Rosa came into Cecils room, my mate pretended to be Cecil and said "I don't wanna see you, you naked bitch!" and he literally turns away! It fits so perfectly.

People who have played this game through and through know that Kain is probably the most important character. Think about it: while Cecil is being the hero, getting the girl, having everyone help him and becoming king in the end, Kain suffers because he cannot be the hero because of Golbez, he cannot get the girl because she doesn't love him back and he cannot become king because he must atone. Poor Kain; no human should have to go through all of that.

@hobosorter Yeah, he's my favorite Final Fantasy character. I'm pretty sure he suffers the most out of the many tragic characters in the Final Fantasy series, maybe on par with Cloud or Auron, perhaps Lightning. But Kain has been doing it longer. XD

@THELASTREDMAGE at the risk of sounding rude, is a -romantic- love story ALWAYS necessary? It worked well in the original, but I don't think it would fit the tone of The After Years. Kain knows he's never going to get Rosa, but that's all the more reason why he's so protective of Ceodore - he won't fail his two best friends in THIS regard. He's like a second father to the boy, and I'll be honest - I'm an absolute sucker for the relationship between those two.

@JeisonKen That doesn't make him an "important" character. You could argue that he's the most interesting, developed, sympathetic, favorite, or whatever but in terms of importance to the plot, Cecil is more important.

Kain is awesome and everything, but the "most important" is not the right term. It was his own weakness that led him to be controlled, but he did rise above that and did indeed become a hero. You make it sound like everything was handed to Cecil, but both of them struggled in their own way.

@JeisonKen Funny you say that, because Kain is my favorite character for all of those reasons. You make an excellent point. Cecil may be an awesome hero, but he's also the cliche'd type of hero. Try being the kind of protagonist Kain ended up being. That's a tough road.

Of course Cecil is the main character and most plot-important character. I might have worded this a little weirdly, but what I'm trying to say is that Kain is the character that the player is really meant to feel for, the character that goes through the most. FF4... Nobody but Anna and Tellah died. died, and Damcyan was Epic. Bombed, Arrows were shot... Edward only surviving... Tellah leaving... There is SO much FF4 did that none other did.

Also, thinking about all the themes it explores, such as betrayal (Cecil thought Beigan and Kain were his friends, but was betrayed by both), where Duty ends and Honor begins (carrying out missions to kill innocent people being wrong) and the like. When I think about it, I'm surprised I was able to grasp such ideas at the young age I was when I first played this.
