I took their Intermediate Pistol class a few weeks ago. It had a large classroom component where we worked on grip, trigger press, aiming, and other techniques. The class ultimately ended on the range putting the lessons learned into practice.
The entire class was 1 on 1, just me and the instructor (not Dan for me). Though I don't have much class experience, I thought the class was excellent. I was free to ask questions the entire time. I plan to take more classes in the future.
Great video. I've been to bullseye several times and their staff was very accomodating and knowledgable about their products. Their prices on the other hand were a little steep. Im from northern california as well and used to live in Santa Rosa but currently reside in Fort Bragg.
awesome stuff man! its me randy...i took the SCT intro to handgun/carbine course with you in sacramento....this looks like a great course! i may try to take it one of these days...good shooting!
Man, in the beginning there with the footage of you training, that target came at you pretty fast and I wasn't expecting it haha(the 2nd time it went at you)
I took Bullseye / Dan's "basic shotgun" training and I agree that he's an excellent instructor with tons of real-world experience (you didn't mention he's also former law enforcement). One thing that isn't obvious is that he also has a very nice balance of strength and sensitivity. I took the training with a female friend, the first firearms training for either of us. I'd recommend him to any couple considering a firearms purchase or simply learning how to operate them safely and effectively.
@KlezmerGuy If I remember correctly you took your course with Josh, our Chief Instructor. I am current military (Staff Sergeant/E-6 in a local SAPPER unit). All of our instructors (currently 4 on staff) are former LE/SWAT or US Military Combat Arms.
@jimkressin. This is Dan. I am not NRA Certified, as we do not teach NRA curriculum at our Training Center. We developed our curriculum based on the best input and practices from our Instructors, taking the different aspects of combat shooting from the Military, Law Enforcement, and Civilian training and combining what we feel is the best of all 3.
Thanks for doing these reviews on handgun courses in the area. It's nice to see a few glimpses into how and where these courses operate. Hope you do end up doing more like the Yavapai courses at Reed's in Santa Clara or the upcoming Magpul handgun courses coming in Sept at Metcalf range in San Jose. I'd probably end up getting crappy footage if I attempted a class and then tried to film it like you do. lol
@ZombieTactics Exactly! We should arrange that anyway, but if you are in this area again, definitely let me know. We need to get that going over here on the West Coast. They are having WAY too much fun in TN!
If it wasn't 6 hours from me i'd take a trip there, me and the wife would enjoy the hell out of something like this from what your video showed us. Thanks for the video......
What is the purpose of hitting the target with your hand? Are you not running the risk of getting your arm grabbed? Also could you shoot from the hip instead of bringing the firearm up to your chest?
@JustInCase308 The general idea is to interrupt the pattern of attack and get inside his decision loop. At the slow practice speeds shown in this video ... yes there would be that risk. In a real engagement at ... it's just a very fast backhand across the face or cuffing of the ears with not much danger of the arm being trapped, as it won't even be seen coming. I did some hip-shooting as well, but didn't catch good footage to show.
Some times tho,,,, negative reviews or comments are useful in that they teach others what to look out for, ,,, if done tactfully the negative aspects are hardly noticed,,,,, jus' my 2 cents.... ;0)... ~Bear
@ZombieTactics I personally think that is a good thing when you every once in a while "juke" muscle memory and get your fighting positions to be more fluid. I noticed a couple of times, you were pivoting at the hip while shooting, did you notice any accuracy differences shooting left to right?
@lambdog76 I didn't notice any particular differences, but it was pretty good day, pattern-wise. Even with all the various exercises, movement, etc., I only had a few flyers. Pivoting at the hip - definately something I am working on, as I agree it's important to try to reach a point of fluidity rather than "assuming a stance".

@jimkressin I would put Dan in the "way beyond category". NRA training is very good, but also very basic IMHO.
