The style and structure of klezmer as we know it today is thought to have come largely from 19th century Bessarabia (Romania), where the bulk of today's traditional repertoire was written. It is based on hora, sirba, doina, all of them of Romanian origin.
What's nice about klezmer is the same that's nice about ashkenazim culture in general: it's above nationalism and its pissing contests. Yes, Bessarabia is largely Romanian but Naftule Brandwein was polish and his greatest hits were not only songs like "Das Teureste in Bukowina" but also "Heiser Bulgar" and "Der Terkisher-Bulgar Tanz". BTW Andy Statman is great! Next time I go to the Village I'm going to see his gig.
I never said Romanians are above any other mation, or that the Romanian culture is above any other culture. So I am not sure what pissing contest you are talking about.
ok, i must have misunderstood then. Romanian music is the best btw but the reason is that in the south you get all the Bulgarian Serbian and Turkish influences, in Transylvania you have the Hungarian and German influences and in Moldova of course you have the ukranian/russian influence, and you have all the talented gypsy musicians all over the country. In other words it can never get boring it's always different and very colorful. Same is true about klezmer.
I live in New York City and would love to attend this shul when a concert is happening. Please post information about this; especially if it really happens twice a week!!
