has OSHA seen this? they still do stuff like this now? how is that even legal? might as well be volly department. probly would have been more guys on a volly engine
FDs have historically been understaffed, the economy typically has little to do with it.The city administration are clueless on how much manpower is neede at incidents, and they "justify"shirt/minimal staffing by proclaiming FD/EMS is a service that does not produce"tangible" products.or by stating that "true" emergencies rarely happen.
what happened to the initial STILL response? usually when u get a reported structure fire u get a Still response ours is one engine, 1 truck, 1 ambo, 1 buggy, and the dept over sends an engine and a chief and gradually as the alarm levels upgrade more apparatus is sent in, but BIFD apparently didnt have any more companies to send in idk why but if that was my DEPT, weve already would have at least 3 engines and maybe 2 trucks already staged and working putting lines one it
@JKSK8ERLIVE They get that on there still response but the dept is/was severly undermanned. Typically the have 3 personnel out of one station and 2 out of the other. these 5 FF's cover the entire town for both fire and EMS. Blue Island is a relatively large and busy dept. Even today it is not uncommon for them (or some of there nieghbors) to run a 1 or 2 man engine out the door to a report of a fire. Still a great Dept. with some of the best FF's I know. Improvise, adapt, overcome
@probemedic yeah the economys really jaggin with budget cuts but all i know is the best way to go is to run all vollie even though my dept is paid we used to be vollie way back when 9 years ago or try to hire part timers/ probies we always see new meat on our engine co but yeah BIFDs really screwed over with there staffing/ manpower but i know 2 man engines are common cuz a couple towns in Evergreens district run 2-3 man engines we have 12 guys covering our whole town 24-7
@JKSK8ERLIVE Volunteer depts. are good for areas with low call volumes and/or small populations,or jurisdictions that dont have many special target hazards such as hospitals,Nursing homes, schools, large industries, large shopping malls, etc. They are also good if you have enough people that actually show up to calls, which some dont, negating the fact you even have an FD at all.Volunteer depts cannot work typically for larger jurisdiction/populations w/ heavy call volume.
@CyanoticFuture yeah actually 75% of the U.S. is volly it can be successful because u have more manpower and cheaper funding since its all free but in PA its all volly mostly it can be a slower response times but the dedication it takes covers it i know a couple vollies and they have more commitment supposedly but even suburban FDs can be volly not just rural we used to be volly about 10-11 yrs ago then we switched over to full time/ part time
@JKSK8ERLIVE A lot of those volly depts. in PA are private and broke.75 %of the dept in the US can be volunteer because most of the country isnt heavily urbanized.New york,Cleveland,Miami,LA,Dallas,Chicago, etc. obviously cant be volunteer,
@probemedic yeah but BIFDs still a great FD despite their terribly low man power they really try to get by with that but luckily theres MABAS for additional mutual aid it can be up to 4-5 extra companies on an auto aid and that means saving more lives and property
Evergreen Park Fd is almost over staffed we got 102 part timers and like 20 full timers and we got 12 guys working one shift and we only got one station one time we had a 6 man engine crew running on an EMS call and our coverage is about 20,000 residents and like 4-5 sq miles we got 3 engines 3 ambos one snorkel squad a buggy, two air support air cascade units a light wagon a comm van and a couple other suppiort vehicles its a good thing though
Get away from the house! The fire department is clearly on their way and you two are not doing any good with that garden horse and whatever she's using. You never know when flames can come shooting out that window.
Wow - that was one brave firefighter to enter that house all by himself with just one line. Glad to see this was in 1993, hope this department is better staffed now. Good video.
One firefighter is completely inappropriate to fight an active structure fire. At the same time, the well-intentioned civilians spraying water at smoke from outside and smashing all the windows to let the fire have more oxygen is putting the firefighters' lives in grave danger.
@Jay91150 I agree. Although the fire department would've busted them out anyway most likely to let the heat escape to prevent a flash over. But they can do it much more safely because they'll have their protective gear on. Plus they'll be ready to put water on the fire to prevent anything from growing bigger due to the oxygen. That water hose the homeowner is using is doing little good if anyway.
Who are all the civilians busting out windows and using an attack line from the outside? Good way to burn the place down don't ya think?
