  • the song sounds like it could be a System of a Down song

  • Ugh. Worst ending ever.

  • god damn. i played this game for weeks. great and heavy to solve .

  • I loved this game as a kid!

  • If this recording was your actual play, you have incredible reflexes.....

  • I FINALLY FOUND IT.

I think this was the game was what the game Pharaoh was spoofed off of. Pharaoh being the game Randal was playing in the "the last starship trooper" episode from the Clerks Animated Series.

  • I remember making it all the way to the ladder section but never being able to succeed a triple jump.. That game was annoyingly addictive..

  • Does anyone remember game where you played in strange area with lava and barricades... really old game...

  • after much years this music still scare me

  • Apocalipto: The videogame

  • after hearing all annoying background music throughout the game the designer even didn't make a decent ending??? WTF?

  • A bit of a repetitive game wasn't it?!

  • Does anyone remember how to get the fat guy on this game? It was a glitch. I think you pressed run stop at the intro screen and your character would look overweight.

  • This music gets me dancing

  • best gamemusic ever

  • This music brings back nice memories :)

  • I can't believe I played this game as a child. It seemed like that first level with the spears went on forever....and I don't think I ever got past the last level with the broken bridge. High jump, medium jump and low jump...yeah, I fell to my death.

  • Thank you so much for posting... gives me Goosebumps.

This was actually the Game that took me from my Atari 2600 to the C-64.

I still get Chills hearing the starting Sound ... Brooooooom...

1982 released... this is (now 2011) 29 Years old! Like watching the 50s Hollywood Movies back then.

Im SO curious what Computergames will look like in the Year 2040.

    If i'm still alive then.

  • You are good at this... I could never finish this level... how can anyone react that quickly?

  • Man I used to love / hate this game.

  • Nice job, but the spear sounds in the Gauntlet were either modded or glitched out, so it doesn't count.

Try it again without cheating on the hardest level lol. The spear sounds make you jump wrong.

  • wow you are skilled!

  • Funny, I never thought of if before, but the indians throwing spears from both sides on the game must have had some idea of getting a Darwin Award for themselves, if you know what I mean.

I think I played through this one. The biggest "problem" with this game is that the music is so mesmerizing, that it spoils your concentration because it is so good...

  • Now here is one c64 game I actually did finish. Man, that game is so tedious and repetitive.

  • Does anyone remember a C64 game where you looked around in a castle for pieces of a glowing pentagram? Its been driving me absolutely nuts.

  • @DemontauruSes

    You mean "Staff Of Karnath"

  • @DerSchmu I LOVED THAT GAME!!!

  • I loved the music to this, really menacing!

  • amazing sound...

  • The first time I played this game was in 1986. It was very exciting.

  • You deserve some kind of award just for getting through this thing. And to think it was the same company that gave us the awesome Forbidden Forest. Aztec Challenge had to be absolutely the most mindnumbing game ever, especially the endless sideways room runs.

  • I did beat the game the first two complete rounds today, but the third round ist hell ;) everything gets much faster each time you beat the game.

  • Used to love this game. Found a glitch to... When the game is showing a demo it will run through parts of each stage.. If you fiddle around with the joystick you'll be able to take over from the demo.... Level is totally the hardest stage. the music was AWESOME to. Really a great game.

  • Used to love this game. Found a glitch to... When the game is showing a demo it will run through parts of each stage.. If you fiddle around with the joystick you'll be able to take over from the demo.

  • This tune will haunt me long after Alzheimer.

  • When those Aztecs have challenges they don't mess around.

  • In those days you really could earn money with such games ... haha ... good old times

  • After playing the game for a while you really became mad about the music...couldnt stand it after playing a time :)

  • I first played this game on a black/white TV set, which is really funny. Especially the Piranha stage. You just don't see the fish. Fortunatly it is enough to swim out at the bottom and then up again, minimizing the risk of being eaten :)

  • wtf ?!?!.... and thats IT?!?!?

  • lol ! best level design ever! ^^

  • @oooonek

yeah...the game designers really invested much time in gameplay and level design :))))

  • Ahhh, back when some dude could program an entire game himself, and that game would be played by EVERYBODY in the world with a computer, distributed by swapping floppy disks around.

  • Still love the music after all these years ! Another flawed yet brilliant masterpiece from Paul Norman.

  • 6:59. Sprite collision after sprite collision. Why didn't the character die?

  • @6anatolyy4

The character can dive for few seconds. Under warter he is invisible for the piranhas.

  • @DerSchmu It made total sense at the time.

  • @DerSchmu Fair play, sir. I didn't know that. Thanks

  • @DerSchmu ah ok. Thanks.

  • @DerSchmu it's water! oooohhh! now i get it!

  • @6anatolyy4 Ah. Thanks for pointing that out. Nice work on the Longplay. Keep it up.

  • @6anatolyy4 - these are tool assisted, it's cheating but at least we get to see how the games end. Personally, I think it's bullshit.

  • mad skils right there dude

horrible evil music, someone should make a apocalypto montage set to it.

  • This is the earliest example of dynamic videogame music I can recall. Great music it was

  • this isn't c64 version.... the sky was blue in c64

  • @piacca73

This is the C64-version. You had to play that game four times thru before you reach the end. And the last round have the dark background.

  • @DerSchmu Uhm ah ok :) last round was impossible for me :P I didn't remember that :))) sorry

  • ok i stand corrected..this one is the biggest piece of crap...never could get past the spear chukkers

  • @DerSchmu - (2nd Level...) MAN... are you consuming any drugs???

  • This game was RETARDEDLY HARD in it's first level... The rest was easy. But it was very addictive.

Plus it has a SID music track that is quite minimalistic but it Rocks! :)

  • goil! war damals so ein geiles spiel aufn C64! vor allem die musik und der sound *g*

  • I used to play this on my old black and white tv. However I could not get past the water stage because on a black and white TV you cant see the red things that get you.

  • @StRoRo Yep thats how I remember playing it too

  • I loved this game when I was little, but my dad had to complete the first level for us so we could do the rest.

  • First video game I ever played.

I played it in my C128, from a cassette: Aztec Challenge on side A, Magic Carpet on side B. It was 1989.

  • this level was unbelievably annoying

  • after 27 years this music still scares me :)

  • right. It's fucking scary. I Also feared a lot the digital scream of "friday 13" and the digitalized laugh in "impossibile mission"

  • Yes. They made an incredible work . C64 is an old platform but with a very good sound card also

  • NO music is scarier than the C64 and good use of its saw waves for bass and melody. Case in point, Forbidden Forest and its Beyond sequel. Friggen hell XD

  • Igree :)

  • @Deioth Agreed....especially with Forbidden Forest!

  • I remember when we got our first C64 when I was about 5. My dad used to play this and he was really good at it. Now Im 30 and hes 63 Id like to see how he would fair on MW2!

  • this is an old favorite of mine

  • That music is haunting, it still scares me.

  • One of my favorites of the old school games!

  • I used to play this game alot. I found the first level the hardest by far

  • They made an Atari 2600 port of this. It wasn't much easier. A whole lot fewer levels though.

  • wasnt the atari version the first one and the C64 version came after that?

  • WTF...I am young again!!!! ^^^^^^^^^^

  • It was damn hard.

  • @kyanzes it still is as hard as it was!

  • eines der besten spiele aller zeiten

  • I completed this game taking turns with my dad and friends, a very good memory, we were hooked on it. Awesome game for it's time.

  • GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!!

  • One of favourite games all the time. And nice to see that somenone actually made it trough!

  • Probably the worst ending EVER. :-)

  • i like the music to this game

  • I loved this game!

I remember the piranhas was invisible on Black % White N TVs, some friends playing BN didn't understand how to pass the river level. :)

  • HAHAHAHA I was one of them..damn! XD

  • I used to go mental playing this game when i was 5. Ah the memories! This is one of the few that i remember.

  • Looking at this game makes me 20 yrs younger...fantastic game.

  • the music is the best

  • This game has one of the best soundtracks i think.

I never got past level 4 for some reason.

But better endings i have seen.

  • killer game! luved it

  • I gotta admit, I never really did fall in love with this game, but, to say the least, the atmosphere is terrifying. It seems to get your adrenaline pumping! The music is great too, showing once again Cosmi is a great SID composer.

  • You mean Paul Norman, a musican turned game creator. Cosmi was a company.:)

Good old days, when one guy could make a great game in a matter of weeks.

  • lol

  • the hardest part was the first level

  • Yes it was. Used to kick my but every time as a kid. Make my heart race and everything.

  • What is that mural thing, the Aztec god of disapproval?

And that guy must be dumber than a sack of wet mud, you just know the prize of an aztec challenge is probably getting sacrificed.

  • omg what a huge soundtrack

  • Oh man, I hated that game! I played for MONTHS out of determination to beat the damn thing! The music still gets stuck in my head to this day.

Flawless victory, congrats! (Unless that was edited...) I remember needing nerves of steel and zen-like concentration to win, just to see a frowny stone-head. Ah, the good old days when video games were made to give players a kick in the nuts.

  • this game was awesome...I used to play this game for hours as a little kid...

i was watching this hoping to see the end of game, but I guess there isn't one?

  • With me it was the same.

First I didn`t know, there were even piranhas! *LOLMAO

I just thougt, the game had a mistake!

  • I remember having to use the color tv in the living room to beat this game. On my B/N tv it was impossible to see the bloody piranhas! Too bad the ending (ending?) sucked...

  • so at the end you win the game and you dont even get a congratulations screen... its like you did all those levels of pure concentration and you dont even get a thank you.

  • EPIC GAME...... spent hours playing this. Some reason my game would hang up on the pirannas sometimes though :(

That Son of a bitch blowdart tile level sucked LOL....

  • Where can i get this game's soundtrack?

  • thanks to whoever put this video on here! my brothers and i spent way too many hours beating this game. the second i heard the music intro i was like ,holy f**K........i know this! thanks for the rehash!

    ps-to mediumjimslade,

thanks for the brain-kick of Forbidden Forest! another super tough game of the times! i'm going there now, hoping to get stung to death by a bloody death by a flying insect! YA!

  • The bridge sucked yeah. This reminds me of another (shareware?) game of the time called CAVERN where you would pilot this little ship through, well, caverns that would get steadily narrower and the screen (and the classical music tempo) would scroll faster, and then you'd start seeing the patterns going BACKWARDS and inevitably crash and burn. How many "Manimiles" can you make?

  • The reason it reminds me of CAVERN is the increase in music tempo that makes you start twitching and then end up making the wrong move. The pirahnas were fairly easy for me, I usually ate it on the stairs or in the cave series with the monoliths and pits and arrows.

  • fuck that bridge ............fuck it

  • I never got to the end of this game. What an anti-climactic end! But I LOVED this game much as I was unable to beat it, God bless youtube for showing me the ends to games I could never beat (Bruce Lee comes to mind...) and I was unaware Paul Norman made this game in addition to Forbidden Forest, one of my other childhood faves... he was amazing for the time!

  • this is probably the hardest and the most frustrating game in C64. Still cant understand with what kind of patience we played these games when we were kids :)

  • good comment! nowadays when I play c64 on emu or something, I have a patience of like 5 mins, and when I loose one life I quit :) back in the 80s I played those games for a whole days with much patience and beat many games. Today they seem just too hard for grown ups hehe.

  • exactly!!!!

  • Never made it past the stairs...

  • Me and my mate went down to our local computer shop and they had this on display, and we were playing this for over 2 hours(very nice bloke to let us play that long) and when i was playing it was the music getting louder that mad my heart race and panic on that first level and getting killed and start all over again wanting to get further.I did`nt get past the first level my mate did. I LOVE the music.

  • Great game, but what a lousy ending.

  • yes! ending was a real shit.. was it a final ending, or it repeat itself on a higher speed and difficulty again and again?

  • best game ever. everything.

  • Excellent palying. This is one of the most frustrating games. I remeber taking it to the level - that now turns out to be the last one - and never being able to beat it. Actually I was about 6-7 years old then, and looking at the game now and trying to pass the first level today, I have absolutely no idea how I managed to reach level 7.

  • the music is awesome!

  • You are awesome! Thanks for the ride down Memory Lane! I used to whoop this game on the lowest level, but it would cream me at anything over level 3, lol...

  • Never completed this as a kid, due to playing ona b/w screen. The piranhas didn't show on that :p Anyway, Gateway to Apshai..omg, that game stole alot of hours from me as a kid. I still like those bigass adventure/rpg games.

  • ^_^ I loved this game me and my sis use to play this years ago lol but never was able to finish it, the pirhanas they were murder, oh by the way does anyone know the name of the C64 game were you controlled a little white knight thing, it had blue walls and this orange stuff to show where you havent been yet, it was somewhat an adventure game.

  • gateway to apshai

  • do the piranha stage on B/W tv. :D

  • I could never get past the broken bridge with the jumps.....great game though. Lmao...the first level killed me because you really had to keep your eye on the screen to know whether to duck or jump. Loved the music

  • One freaking excellent game. Great gameplay with one of those soundtracks thats impossible to get out of your head.

  • Another great game from my childhood however I could only ever get as far as the pirahnas. I'm glad I could finally watch the end. But what was the point? What were all the trials for?

  • scared me three!

  • when we first had this game we only had a black and white TV to play it on. so on the pirahna level they didn't even show up on the screen, it was near impossible. it was only when we got another colour tv that we realised what was happening on that level!

  • one way to do it on BW was to swim down (you will appear in the upper screen) and then swim up again. Repeat this until done.

Damn, those were the times :)

  • Legendary game. and yes it was quite scary when you were a kid.

  • yeah scared the shit out of me with the snakes and spiders and all when I was a kid.... the NIGHTMARES!!!!

  • This make me bring back in time when i whas a little boy i played it every time i play it now to i have the commodore128D computer and i play it with my friend to when hi is with me than we played the usagi yojimbo and green beret. But Aztec challenge is a great funny game! :)

  • gameplay > graphics

  • tru dat. but when the gameplay is horrible you'd at least expect some good graphics.

I love my amiga500... and there are many great games... but this... gah.
