@DionLaurent1 It doesn't really matter and reflects nothing negative on black people. You're being overly defensive. This entire documentary talks about white people murdering natives yet I take no offense. This entire documentary talks about people being basically the same all around the world. This isn't a story its a factual documentary so deal with the fact that it was a black man. It doesn't even matter to anyone and shouldnt matter to you.
@Seanze329 From where I'm standing, it makes whites look like concurring warriors. Seems more to glorify them if anything. And I can't stand this enforced white guilt it's trying to promote. It's bullshit and will accomplish nothing. If anything whites should be mad that it ever happened and strive like the rest of us for it never to happen again. Regardless the race.
@DionLaurent1 In no way is this saying good job to whites. It is not JUSTIFYING the cause of what happened, it is EXPLAINING the cause of what happened. And once again in reality it is saying that the success of the Eurasian peoples doesn't have anything to do with an innate ability in those people but rather the innate opportunity that the geography gives. Eurasians are not the way they are today because they are better but rather their land was better. Nothing they could control.
@DionLaurent1 And whites aren't happy that it happened and neither is this documentary if you watch the rest of it. He even says that this documentary and book should be used to make sure it doesn't happen again.
@Venaloid A bit late, but still... the Hebrew word used actually translates to "murder," an entirely different action than killing as any sane person recognizes. Discussing topics of which one is ignorant makes one appear foolish to those who have some small measure of knowledge - but I guess some things never change.
They're blaming the small pox on the African man. That's unfair. Moreover, why weren't the South Americans not able to spread *THEIR* diseases to the Europeans?
@vaibanez17 If only the Incas actually armed themselves on their visit to Francisco Pizzarro they could have easily overwhelmed the Spanish just by their sheer numbers 5000 vs 200. It is surprisingly sometimes how the difference in the outcome of one encounter can change the course of history.
That's a common misconception based on a stereotype about Indians (native Americans), whether they be from North or South America. Facial hair a phenotypic expression of testosterone, an inherently male hormone. Genes control to which extent the hair is expressed, but all males grow facial hair.

@mickeypopa,Actually the reason why the American Indians now have facial because of their mixture of white ancestry, before that they didn't because of climatic reasons.
Nope, it's simple biology. Facial hair is a secondary sexual characteristic in male humans, just as pubic hair is. How much of it we grow varies from person to person, because expression of hormones is determined by genes. But ALL male humans grow it, except rare exceptions of hormone imbalance. Such hormone imbalance can also cause women to grow facial hair in young age, but it's mostly in older age when estrogen levels are decreased.
No, I'm educated. I'm not so sure about you though.
No educated individual would first say that Indians don't grow beards, and then say it's due to climatic reasons. What in hell does climate have to do with testosterone and secondary sexual characteristics?
Anyway, it's pointless to waste any more time on this. I'm not here to teach you basics of human biology.
Also, if you want to know if I'm "Chicano", is it too hard to look at my profile page?
Yes, that's correct. Only Hollywood movies depict Indians as people with no beards, but of course those are just movies. They have thin beards, sometimes even a few patches of hair across their face. Some Caucasians have such beards also. Some have lavish beards. It's all genetic. But testosterone is the same in all male humans. It causes facial hair to grow. Some people's genes don't allow it to express itself as much, some people's genes do. Ethnic groups have such differences.
Why would they take a slave into battle? To help carry weapons, wait till the slaughtering is over, then help carry weapons back to the ship? No blacks were there! Spanish hair-face + swords + guns + horses + smallpox + measles + syphilis! Thats it!
I seriously can't believe that Athawalpa would not kill the Spanish Conquistadors :S and that he should have just had the men carry small weapons just in case :S
@osallent I was not commenting on whether the consquest took place with less than 200 spaniards. It did! I was commenting on the story of how the spaniards took power over the Incas. If the above account is true, then the Incas had a very stupid leader.
@vcomp1960 This account was independently confirmed by Atahualpa's nephew who wrote about the conquest of his people at the hands of the Spaniards. His accounts are almost identical to those of the Spaniards. Atahualpa wasn't stupid, he just had a different cultural reference point guiding his actions. Hindsight is 20/20. The same thing happened to the Aztecs, they were unable to see the threat by the Spaniards until it was too late.
As the priest was the one speaking to him there may not have been an interpretor at that point in time. many times religion was part of why they conquered these countries and cultures, so when they encountered a new language, the priest was often one of the first to learn it in order to spread the word of God to the natives. Also, geography was a major issue with the mountains and the difficulty of travel.
this is bullshit. dont try and tell me a black man brought disease to the americas when white people have been running around the world with there black plague carrying asses. this is foolish pish posh. i bet these videos are going to say all other races are the causes of the world's problems. where do these people get off praising the greed of Europeans? I'd rule the world too if i stole everything i wanted from other cultures to survive.
@sanderino26 lol....when i saw the part about the black slave bringing disease to the americas i thought to myself"oh shitttt..somebody, somewhere is going to take offense at this" loy and behold i see your comment. Lol, yes you are somewhat justified in your comment to an extent, but everyone knows the white europeans did their fair share of disease spreading(probably most of it). I dont think they meant to be racist tough so don't take it to heart man.lol
@ArmanCortez1 I can agree, it is kind of disturbing since he prolly had it tough enough as it was, but goes down in history as a disease spreader who's existence creates death for many. I'm sure he woudn't be there given the choice. It seems sort of tasteless to dub this captured victim who has no free will and is conveniently nameless as the 1st to bring deadly disease to the Americas. Oh well, poor guy...........sorry for any spelling I am almost bilingual and not too good at either :)
@AlienSexRanger its not that he was lazy it just that he was too mighty to run away, it's still kinda funny though because I was smiling when I first saw it
the wars against protestant nations in the XVI and XVII fucked the spanish catolic fanatical empire...in the same time spain faced england, prussia, netherland, france, sweden, ottomans, czechs and they have to mantain a monster empire in america and spain in that time have around 10 milions habitant SO IMPOSSIBLE
We were not intimidated by the terrorists in the Pentagon and the White House. The newly voted-in government listened to the will of the people and abandoned the criminal Iraq war.
Christians only kill in the heat of the battle.lol! Hopefully someday the human race will be done with all religions and the self-righteous bastards they breed.
@hrothgleas Those groups don't go to impoverished places, help people then leave. They also preach their own belief system. Can they help people without blowing their own horn or without condemning other belief systems? No, of course not. It's part of the package. This story is most extreme; but shows how religious belief systems create arrogant douche-bags that claim to have divine knowledge and use what they have been taught to justify their actions.
@hrothgleas I Agree.. my first comment was about belief systems that claim to know what God is, what it wants, and claims knowledge about the purpose of the universe; then use that as a reason to get what they actually want. All societies throughout history probably have done this. It was more a generalization about all these belief systems and how they create self-righteous followers. I Used the word "Christians" because of the specific comment in the video by one of the Spaniards.
In this video if the Inca speak Quechua and the Spanish speak Spanish, how are they understanding each other, like when the general and the king meet? Did they train a translator or are they just reading body language?
News Flash---racist scumbags mad about destroying their myth of white supremacy. Idiots chime in on blog angry that their racist ideology has been smashed again. Confederate soldiers and slave owning idiot are rolling in their graves --the South SHALL NEVER RISE AGAIN!
But that "Culture" as you so aptly stated, may have been vastly different if it were not for Geography. As stated multiple times throughout the presentation, geography is the root of culture, society, technology and science. Culture and society of course being made up of ideals, theories, language, religion and any other basis of a society.
By rights, the Incas shouldn't of even HAD an advanced culture due to the difficulty of the geography. Their CULTURE enabled them to overcome the terrain and establish an advanced civilisation.
5:22-5:25 ~ SURE they do; there was definitely a World War going on between Puritans and witches in colonial America, right? =P Christians "only kill in the heat of battle" my ass.
Looks like Diamond has managed to contradict himself yet again.
It was the CULTURE of the Incas that allowed them to be massacred by the Spaniards. If the the 7,000 men had been under arms, there is no way the Spaniards could have won, even with superior technology.
@SD78 and if the u.s. wasnt sp arrogant, we wouldn't have under estimaed japan or the muslim jihadists. i guess it's our culture that made Pearl Harbor and 9-11 occur.
@lamaya43 Ah, but when we aren't arrogant, like with Iraq, we are called terrorists and warmongers. Conclusion: if you act before you get attacked you are abusing the power of your empire, if you wait until you get attacked then you were arrogant and brought it on yourself. Your comment is a fallacy, sir; I suggest you correct it.
@0HippyHunter0 iraqis didn't attack us, it was our "friends" the Sadis...just like it's are "friends" the Pakis helping kill us in Afghanistan...and after being in that god forsaken sand box hell, we helped create, for six months, i'm not correcting jack shit. The U.S. is trying to play empire, the sick thing is that we think we spread democracy.
@lamaya43 Not surprisingly, you didn't read what I said. You have your opinion and all the powers of heaven and Earth cannot change it. No matter how you slice it your comment is a fallacy; agree, disagree, whatever. The US IS an empire, arguably the most gracious and responsible empire that has ever existed. Frankly, I don't care that you were there. It's pretentious to roll that out when you're looking for credibility; sad, really.
@0HippyHunter0 who did and didn't attack us isn't opinion, it's fact. all the 9-11 hijackers were saudi, and it's known by the cia and state department that al qaeda has a presence in pakistan, YET the pakistani government does very little about it. the jingoistic attitude you have is common in conservatives, which i assume you are. if you assume i am a liberal you would be correct.
@lamaya43 Kid, you still haven't read my post. I'm guessing you don't know what a logical fallacy is; please look it up before posting again. If you're guessing that I'm a conservative you're wrong. Dead wrong. I knew you were a liberal, its obvious by your US bashing, you didn't need to tell me. For future reference, you comment on loving the empire makes absolutetly no sense. Just none. All people/countries have periods of increased influence, empire or not. All fall. Jesus, kid.
@0HippyHunter0 i also know that conservatives love to say how great the empire is, but aren't willing to put themself in harms way to maintain it. my statement, about being there, is just my way of saying that even though i am critical of the us government, i do realize it's the best system in the world, and i was willing to put myself in danger to preserve it, but NOT fight in a useless war. and if you really loved this country, you wouldn't us to be an empire, b/c eventually empires fall
@0HippyHunter0 and Hippyhunter? really? you probably like to screw your girlfriend in the ass b/c it makes you feel as if your dick is large enough to go past your balls
Geography is the reason we got famers, increased the production and had time to sit down and think about other things like written language, technology etc. Then we developed from there... you honestly don´t believe Britain had the culture they have now, and won? No... definitely geography was the beginning, then culture, politics and economy came after that.
@SD78 pay attention, he says that they show up unarmed expecting the spaniards to retreat, despite the fact that they were unarmed. this would demonstrate their great power over the spaniards, and discredit the belief that they were gods. how could they be gods if they were running from unarmed soldiers?
It was the CULTURE of the Incas that caused them to send a troupe of dancers instead of armed warriors, which completely contradicts Diamond's claim that the Spaniards won because of 'Guns, Germs and Steel', which is key to his (massively flawed) thesis.
@SD78 yeh, but how did that 'culture' of the incas come in to place? Because of their lack of knowledge about the spaniards and their technologie. in a way because they lacked writing and were cut off from the rest of the world through the Andes.
In a direct way it was the incas culture that was important, but indirectly geologie and the technology of in this case writing were the cause.
1- The 'geography' didn't necessarily cause the Incas to adopt that particular form of culture.
2- This is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to the fact that the unarmed Inca dancers were massacred by the Spaniards solely because of what their culture dictated , in total contradiction of Diamond's thesis and indeed the very title of his book.
@SD78 I can't agree totally with you; the fact that the incas were unarmed is maybe a cultural thing, but if they had known the danger of the spaniards weapons for instance because they had similair technology or had read about it , they would ofcourse never have come without arms.
@SD78 yeah but his point is that geography is what brought forth such cultures. Remember how Atahualpa threw the bible? That's obviously not from his culture, he didn't know what it was. Geography brought fourth domesticated crops, then domesticated animals, but then climate conditions caused people to move around and different civilizations were then formed.
After this defeat they learnt to hide and tried other tactics, but still they lost the next, more decisive battles, outnumbering the Spaniards by even greater numbers.
I must say; I have never heard that the Inca leader disrespected the Word like this. It gives me a whole different perspective of the alleged "slaughter."
@GlorifiedTruth Maybe so, but you gotta look at it from his perspective. He was saying that I already have a religion. Who are you to tell me that I'm wrong. You think that you can just come up into my land and dictate that I should just worship your god? It would be like someone of a different religion telling you that you should submit to their religion with no dialogue...just commands. I'm pretty sure any of us would fight to preserve their way of life.
The Incas also knew the land better. While the Spaniards were deep in unknown territory, exhausted, and wary. They might have better swords and muskets, but the Emperor should've expected they were more advanced and they weren't just travelers looking for directions. If he planned better and ahead of time, none of them would live to tell the tale.
168 guys defeated an 80,000 strong army, conquered the city, and captured the emperor without a single casualty? That's just horrible.
Never trust those numbers. remember that although the incan army was strong, it was spread out thin battling other enemy tribes and resistance to the north. Also, it serves the spaniards returning home to say that their force was even smaller, and that the incans were, "Hordes of those godless devil men."
Emperor was full of himself, was a weak tactician and strategist. He should've been expecting trouble from the outsiders instead of being all festive and disarming his troops.
Should've have his men to secretly watch the Spanish camp the night before while they were shaking in their boots or surround and ambush them. Seal the city gates, post extra guards so no one sneaks in. Tell his soldiers to prepare and their horses are like giant llamas and strike them down first if fighting breaks out.
Lol, boys & their toys! They should've gone all the way & splashed buckets of blood over him as he did his hacking motions. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though and assume he was camping it up for TV effect. :)
The heavy steel armor and horses can make a HUGE difference. The steel armor can withstand quite a bit against normal steel weapons, yet they had wood and bone, rarely even sharpened. And a cavalry charge is destructive enough against someone prepared for it, but imagine a group of half-naked warriors running into a charging group of heavy cavalry armed with weapons that can kill them with one blow. But yes, the Great Inca was stupid, although many of his warriors weren't.
@gishkiman Too bad none of the Incas were armed. The Incas would've massacred the Spanish even if they had used tree branches as weapons. Dishonorable White fucks.
i don't get why everyone is saying the spanish were spreading Christianity on the fact that they were spreading Catholicism... in a sense you can say spreading the words of jesus killed more people than in reality saved people.. this is how corrupt religion is when you force people to believe in something with a gun or sword pointed straight at them
This Atuhualpa was not a true warrior, he just stood there, he couldnt fight. If he were a true warrior he would fight to the death, as an emperor should. But he didnt deserve to be emperor of his people. He was afraid he couldnt fight. What a shame
The documentary said a SPANISH ship carrying slaves brought an infected person to the Americas. And AIDS did originate from Africa - very well documented fact.
It's funny how the National Geographic put a spin on this whereas an African slave brought small pox to the America's. First of all, it was already mentioned that cattle spread from Eurasia to Northern Africa. The majority of African slaves came from Northwestern Africa. Thus they would have been immune to the diseases. Also, Africans had never been known as spreaders of small pox. That distinction was for Europeans. First Africans are blamed for AIDS and now small pox. What's next?
What good Christians the Spanish were, slaughtering unsuspecting, unarmed people in the name of their "Lord!" It's just Christianity showing its true colors - believe what we believe or die and be damned!
its politics... religion grow and survive by asserting strong power in politics and social lives of citizens. So in a technical sense, yes those conquistadors were being good christians. they wee ensuring Christianity's survival
Do you seriously believe that humans can categorically be assigned races in an apodictic manner?
I also don't see how you can claim that African Americans would be of a race of their own; presumably separate from Africans.
It doesn't matter if someone says: White; Black; Brown; or Yellow; they all mean to say the same thing, albeit in a more ostensibly accordant demeanor. You may as well call a "Caucasian" cracker or devil, and a "Mongoloid" a chink or gook.
@skeletonjack9 you only met African Americans?? LOL I have a friend from Ghana, he's not African American, He's black, He's African. LOL there are black people outside of america

like most democrats, the Incans were given the greatest gift of all, the oppurtunity to be saved by JESUS'S love but they refused, prefering to follow their false religion cult much like democrats worship Hussein Obama and mock real Americans that worship JESUS and have jobs and pay taxes
@Madk1p: Your argument makes no sense. First, you would have to account for the language barrier between these two groups. The Incas could not understand if they wanted to. Second, I don't know what democrats you know, but I feel 'worshiping' Obama is a little strong. Third, the vast majority of homeless, jobless people are in fact christians. And of those in prison for tax fraud, again, most are christian. Stats and basic proportions do not lie.
There are some translating mistakes between runasimi - english and spanish-english. For example : This is your power? but, the inka really says "What is this?" .
I wonder if the producers have seen the latest research. Recent studies have shown that the disease which wiped them out wasn't in fact smallpox, but a native plague that had killed many natives thousands of years earlier. The symptoms described in contemporary sources don't match the progression of smallpox, and many of the Spanish as well as the natives became sick and died as well.
Source? It is proven that Smallpox wiped out 90% of the native population, and was used by pizarro against the Inca in the first case of biological warfare. There is a "hypothesis" that a Hemmorhagic virus came along quite awhile AFTER the conquests. And actually this supposed virus did not affect the spanish. The thing is, this "virus" has not been proven to exist.

The reason that the negroid is still living in mud huts while the white man is living in space stations is because biology keeps culture on a leash. You have to evolve the genes for higher intelligence first and only then can the corresponding higher culture be produced.
I know I'm an asshole for laughing but, in other words Atahualpa's plan worked TOO well; ever hear the expression "never fight someone backed into a corner?" The spaniards were so terrified, the fear must have given them near superhuman strength and focus.
In other words, racial genetics aren't THAT important for you weirdo brain people (perceived intelligence is NOT the no1 need for survival); it was the immunities to certain diseases that had developed over many, many centuries with the survivors producing the population that bulked up Spanish genetics compared to Incan genetics. I'm pretty sure that if the Incans originated in Europe instead and the Spanish in South America, the Spanish would have had their butts kicked by European diseases.
weird how the "dead people" are still breathing...

But that "Culture" as you so aptly stated, may have been vastly different if it were not for Geography. As stated multiple times throughout the presentation, geography is the root of culture, society, technology and science. Culture and society of course being made up of ideals, theories, language, religion and any other basis of a society.

It was the CULTURE of the Incas that allowed them to be massacred by the Spaniards. If the the 7,000 men had been under arms, there is no way the Spaniards could have won, even with superior technology.

@0HippyHunter0 iraqis didn't attack us, it was our "friends" the Sadis...just like it's are "friends" the Pakis helping kill us in Afghanistan...and after being in that god forsaken sand box hell, we helped create, for six months, i'm not correcting jack shit. lamaya43 1 year ago
0HippyHunter0 1 year ago
@0HippyHunter0 who did and didn't attack us isn't opinion, it's fact. all the 9-11 hijackers were saudi, and it's known by the cia and state department that al qaeda has a presence in pakistan, YET the pakistani government does very little about it. the jingoistic attitude you have is common in conservatives, which i assume you are. if you assume i am a liberal you would be correct.
lamaya43 1 year ago
@lamaya43 Kid, you still haven't read my post. I'm guessing you don't know what a logical fallacy is; please look it up before posting again. If you're guessing that I'm a conservative you're wrong. Dead wrong. I knew you were a liberal, its obvious by your US bashing, you didn't need to tell me. For future reference, you comment on loving the empire makes absolutetly no sense. Just none. All people/countries have periods of increased influence, empire or not. All fall. Jesus, kid.
0HippyHunter0 1 year ago
@0HippyHunter0 i also know that conservatives love to say how great the empire is, but aren't willing to put themself in harms way to maintain it. my statement, about being there, is just my way of saying that even though i am critical of the us government, i do realize it's the best system in the world, and i was willing to put myself in danger to preserve it, but NOT fight in a useless war. and if you really loved this country, you wouldn't us to be an empire, b/c eventually empires fall

Geography is the reason we got famers, increased the production and had time to sit down and think about other things like written language, technology etc. Then we developed from there... you honestly don´t believe Britain had the culture they have now, and won? @SD78 pay attention, he says that they show up unarmed expecting the spaniards to retreat, despite the fact that they were unarmed. this would demonstrate their great power over the spaniards, and discredit the belief that they were gods. how could they be gods if they were running from unarmed soldiers?
sprayandpray 1 year ago
@sprayandpray
It was the CULTURE of the Incas that caused them to send a troupe of dancers instead of armed warriors, which completely contradicts Diamond's claim that the Spaniards won because of 'Guns, Germs and Steel', which is key to his (massively flawed) thesis.
SD78 1 year ago
@SD78 yeh, but how did that 'culture' of the incas come in to place? Because of their lack of knowledge about the spaniards and their technologie. in a way because they lacked writing and were cut off from the rest of the world through the Andes.
In a direct way it was the incas culture that was important, but indirectly geologie and the technology of in this case writing were the cause.
gijz321 7 months ago
@gijz321
SD78 7 months ago
@SD78 I can't agree totally with you; the fact that the incas were unarmed is maybe a cultural thing, but if they had known the danger of the spaniards weapons for instance because they had similair technology or had read about it , they would ofcourse never have come without arms.
gijz321 7 months ago
@SD78 yeah but his point is that geography is what brought forth such cultures. Remember how Atahualpa threw the bible? That's obviously not from his culture, he didn't know what it was. Geography brought fourth domesticated crops, then domesticated animals, but then climate conditions caused people to move around and different civilizations were then formed.
foshonigga 7 months ago

Culture often develops entirely independent of geography. Look at North Korea.

Add:
The Incas also knew the land better. While the Spaniards were deep in unknown territory, exhausted, and wary. They might have better swords and muskets, but the Emperor should've expected they were more advanced and they weren't just travelers looking for directions. If he planned better and ahead of time, none of them would live to tell the tale.
168 guys defeated an 80,000 strong army, conquered the city, and captured the emperor without a single casualty? That's just horrible.
FortitudeOfHeaven 1 year ago
Never trust those numbers. remember that although the incan army was strong, it was spread out thin battling other enemy tribes and resistance to the north. Also, it serves the spaniards returning home to say that their force was even smaller, and that the incans were, "Hordes of those godless devil men."
gishkiman 1 year ago
Emperor was full of himself, was a weak tactician and strategist. He should've been expecting trouble from the outsiders instead of being all festive and disarming his troops.
Should've have his men to secretly watch the Spanish camp the night before while they were shaking in their boots or surround and ambush them. Seal the city gates, post extra guards so no one sneaks in. Tell his soldiers to prepare and their horses are like giant llamas and strike them down first if fighting breaks out.

on the psychological level it's obvious that atahualpa was a stupid & weak leader & his followers equally naive, coward, unimaginative & subdued
if they had any courage, guts and self-confidence they would have annihilated the spanish & their bloody horses with their bare hands
KalleSacanaBlomkvist 1 year ago
The heavy steel armor and horses can make a HUGE difference. The steel armor can withstand quite a bit against normal steel weapons, yet they had wood and bone, rarely even sharpened. And a cavalry charge is destructive enough against someone prepared for it, but imagine a group of half-naked warriors running into a charging group of heavy cavalry armed with weapons that can kill them with one blow. But yes, the Great Inca was stupid, although many of his warriors weren't.

Second, I don't know what democrats you know, but I feel 'worshiping' Obama is a little strong. Third, the vast majority of homeless, jobless people are in fact christians.
HackCausality 2 years ago
