My stuttering caused me to exceptionally bad social skills, causing to give me stress about my social life, this increased stress caused me to suck at school/sports so now I'll go nowhere in life.
The only fair aspect of life is chance. For the 50% of people who become successful, the other 50% must be unsuccessful to balance out the world. I have lived in the lower 50% of my society all my life and I'm brave enough to accept it.
i stutter too. and i got a nickname in highschool. im called "stutters" and i have a lot of friends and it hates me but it sucks because you just want to get the word out. ugg
i am BRAZILIAN and i am a stunter, ill put my video soon, the thing is that i was stunter all my life, and only now whith 34 years old i got it tired of been stunter,WE NEED TO SAY TO OUR STUTTER FUCK YOU I WILL NOT LET YOU CONTROL ME,AND FUCK THE PEOPLE WHO MAKES FUNNY OF IT!I lost half of my life for this shit, now its time to fight, its never to late.YOU young people, tell your stutter to fuck up,and just talk and let it go,we are the best,SORRY ABOUT MY ENGLISH! LOL
I've been stuttering since I was a child and it gets in your way and ruins your life because you're embarassed and people look at you like you're mentally challenged or isn't smart it's so depressing people who don't suffer with it DO NOT understand. Also they don't understand how bad it hurts or how much it strains your neck muscles it's horrible!!
I hate my stutter..it became a little more frequent as i went into highschool and its hard making friends but it is a part of who i am and if people can't accept that....than i say they are missing out on a special person.
i came across all these videos of people that stutter like this and i rarely do it now (i am 24) compare to when i was younger between the ages of 4 - 15. I got better as i got older. i remember times when i was very eager to say something or someone like my parents or teachers made me nervous i just couldn't get the words out. I don't know how i got over it but now when i talk to anyone i take a split second or two to prepare myself to speak and i keep constant eye contact if i can
I don't stummer too bad but it's sad that I can't say any jokes... or even tell any story not to my friends or in audience. I really dont remember when was the last time i was telling a joke. I'll try your advice about eyes contact, it gana be very hard at first but it's better than hiding myself from everybody. I have a question for you all, did anybody try hipnose?
@coldminded21 heres afew teqs, maybe look at yourself in a mirror and have that eye contact, maybe that will help you , then go out and do the real thing :-) i have a stammer to, it ssucks lol
u r such an encouragement. i stutter and its very frustrating. my self-esteem is extremely low. i really dont wanna stutter anymore, it has made me scared to socialize.
Thank you for this video explaining what you are/were working on. I am studying to be an SLP and about to treat my first client who stutters. Your descriptions and insights are very valuable to hear as I am preparing. Thank you!
You don't know how its like and how hard it is to just "spit it out". I wish you could stutter for a year or two so you can under stand how useless your comment sound to someone who stutters. In fact if you don't have the patience to wait and let them get their words out than don't comment!
@paddyl0 if you undersdtand the nature of a stammer then your comment you just said is the dumbest thing i ever heard related to a speech impediment lolol your names paddy right, typical irish name, we all know what irish are known for lol hahaahahaah
So it is like Tony Robbins said. When your successful you act and stand and hold your posture/ body language differently then when your unsuccessful.
Ya know, if you could anchor some NLP to the words you can say well, you can transition that to all your words and eventually your accent or "pronunciation" and that could totally get rid of new tendencies to even have that old habit come back.
Seriously, all you would need to do is learn like 30 types of anchors and you could own this solution.
Electronic fluency devices maybe a viable treatment option. With the help of a speech therapist, a stutterer can determine which device might work for him/her. For example, if you stutter less when you are singing (either alone or in a choir) or reciting text with others, delayed or frequency-altered feedback devices might be worth a try. For more info about these devices, try Wikipedia. I salute you for your bravery, buix5. Thank you for sharing your story & I wish you great success. Cheers.
Curiously i stammer less when i am not keeping well..the times when the cold makes a change in my voice and my listening ..or when i am drunk..or when talking to myself...loud and clear..
I have been a stammerer myself all my life..earlier i would quiver my lips, close my eyes, trying to get that sylabble or word..now that i have grown up, i have somehow come up with my tricks..like substituting words,,,using a word in another language...no..it doesnt work all that time...probably only 60% of the time..i have noticed my stammer gets worse when i am expressing sumthing emotional...talking on the phone is a nightmare..i sometimes wish telephones were not invented :)..i
stuttering is not psychological. I myself am a recovering stutter. I found out that its behavioral. You do it enough times it becomes second nature. So with that in mind I join a group called Toastmasters. You would not believe the difference I have made in my speaking. I now can speak in front of large groups with out every stuttering. If you stutter i strongly suggest you join. They're international so there's one near by you.
Apparently a good cure for stuttering is to have a device which echos what the sufferer says after a short delay (half a second or so), this creates the illusion in the mind that someone else is saying what they say boosting confidence and reducing stuttering!
i stutter too :( its very frustrating, ruining my life, i feel like its a curse.. when i try a voice immitation i talk perfectly, when i try to whisper that works too, when i try talking loud that works too but when i talk at my normal pitch sound i stutter like no tomorro.. i guess its because of sound pitch.
think of all the other problems in the world that you could have. stuttering isnt a bad one, i think what people dont understand is that believing you stutter makes you stutter. stuttering is psychological. cancer isnt.
we are one of them. and they are us. we (still me sometimes but its fading as i practice awareness of every moment) who stutter BELIEVE that we will stutter, and once that subconscious thought comes into our heads that is the moment that our mouth starts. when the ego mind of beliefs cuts in, the speaking mouth stops.
it may seem very simple but it really is this simple - we stutter because we believe that we will. its 100% psychological. 100%. not 90%. not 99%, 100 fucking %.
Stuttering isn't necessarily psychological. The actual cause isn't known.
And anyway, cancer is something that can be gotten rid of... You live with a stutter your entire life, and many of those people have social anxieties that can really set drawbacks on normal activities.
Not to be rude, but you've gotta see both sides before you make an argument.
Im not making an argument i am making a statement. Stuttering is psychological.
Some people are simply not able to understand things because of the way their mind works. Some people are better than others at golf for example, and people like oreoXinsanity are not able to understand stuttering.
Stuttering is alot easier to rid yourself of than cancer, but cancer is not as psychological. Besides, stuttering can be useful, which is why it is utilized in songs and music.
As a speech pathologist, doing research in the field of specifically stuttering disfluency pathology, I can put an end to your silly argument, stuttering is not a Psychological disorder. So much research has been put into this subject and not pertinent results have been found. Anxiety and fear are products of stuttering, not a causes of stuttering. By the way, Charles Van Riper said something similar to this 60 years ago.
no, but saying "Umm" alot, makes ppl think ur not stuttering. like i say "Umm" and if im trying to name someone i say "what's his face..." i just started saying "Umm" about 7months ago, it helps, but gets old.
Yea im 16 and going thru life with a stutter isent fun. I wanted to aske a girl out on a date for my first time, but you know what i couldent bring myself to it. Im not doing well in school because of it. Its not fun going thru life with it.
You should approach the girl, tell her that you stutter and ask her out. Even if she says no, your in the same position that you were before. You need to live your life, don't avoid any speaking situations. Keep good eye contact when you stutter.
i dont really stutter that much at school, but since im 5yrs younger than you, paratrooperman, kids in my class know i stutter, and have known me for years. but most girls dont care if u stutter or not...well idk im not ur age yet, i guess it will vary. but the bad thing is, if she will say no, then she'll tell all her friends about u stuttering while asking her out. welcome to rumors, true rumors, my friend!
yea, im 15 and live in sweden. im afraid of talking, exept my frineds. And i have notice that ppl dont cares about the stutter, i know its Harder to get rhou a life with stutter but it not bad,
try to talk about a classmate or something trhough email or msn..
thank you for this video. i thought it was great. my bf has a stuttering problem, and he pretty much does everything mentioned in your video. kudos to you :)
I'm 15 and i have a stutter, thankfully it isn't too serious but i often feel uncomfortable in social situations, because when i try to speak sometimes nothing comes out, it's really awkward
I take your point about the *tricks* you (and we) have used to "help" us speak. However, I wonder how many of them are learned and how many are just part of the stuttering process?

yesturtle 4 years ago
Yes, up to now, I'm still a man of few words. A simple "yes" and 2 sentences usually end my answer
to questions that are answerable by four plus plus sentences.
boyutal 4 years ago
Consciously, I found out that I'm almost generalizing details
to give a concise and brief answer. My eye contact, before, was so bad. But now, it kinda improved but there are moments that
I can't avoid looking away while talking to someone that is eager to hear me speak.
This is because, i think, that unconcsiously, I'm afraid to see or know what others think about my
stutter and in effect, I am concealing my stuttering by using my "learned tricks".
boyutal 4 years ago
Same also. Blocks, facial contortions. And I notice that my stutter gets worse when I didn't get enough sleep or I just came from
a drinking spree.
boyutal 4 years ago
Hi Gian.
So what we got is similar. I fully agree that the tricks that we have to conceal our stutter have significant impact to our behaviour.
I never went to a speech therapist seriously so what i did is to just do my own tricks. tapping. pausing.
and worse, needing alcohol just to speak fluently. And I grew up to be non-expressive,
verbally timid and shy.
boyutal 4 years ago
I take your point about the *tricks* you (and we) have used to "help" us speak. However, I wonder how many of them are learned and how many are just part of the stuttering process?
To concentrate on these "secondaries" may not necessarily be THE way forward for everyone. But, I fully agree with you that the most important thing for us is to be open about our stuttering - open with others as well as with ourselves.
1976Jonesy 4 years ago
I think most of them are learned But i'm not an expert in speech pathology, though.
But that bottomline is that these learned tricks influence us to behave in certain ways, which Gian said and I fully agree with.
boyutal 4 years ago
