  • 17 people need to get there hearing checked! I love Sarah and am proud to have her represnting my country. xoxox :)

  • you know, on second thought, the beauty i was getting from this is totally shattered when i think of her pro-choice views. How can she talk about Christmas so elegantly and beautifully and then support the abortion of babies before they're born? totally ruins the song for me :(

  • @phaedragreco your anti-abortion and now anti-song - that is sad for you - enjoy the beauty of the living

  • I feel more like this AFTER Christmas, when all the fun is over and you realize that everything has to return back to what it was. The lights are turned off, the tree comes down, and you settle in for a cold and uneventful January, February, March........

  • teach my feet to fly

  • I agree, she could sing anything and it would be beautiful as is this Joni M. song

  • Her voice makes me weak in the knees! Awesome version of this song.

  • Yeah, fuck Christmas. I'm going to get drunk and kill myself (just kidding).

  • I agree with PauleQueenie

  • @joe88350 I never comment on this youtube channel, BUT - anybody growing up in Fort McMurray Alberta Canada KNOWS a river freezes easily - in fact a very large wide fast flowing dangerous river Athabaska River freezes and we drive on it, skate on it, snowmobile ON IT....yes rivers freeze....especially in -30 and -45 C

    Cheers, truetruth

  • For me this song is about a special girl in a cold and frozen place, with toasty warm pubs and cafes and skies that could make your heart break over and over again long after you're gone from the place. This song will always be about her and how I left my heart behind there with her forever.

  • Sarah McLachlen has some serious talent...I always listen to her songs when I'm upset or stressed....They always help.. < 3

  • The river she's referencing in the song is the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, and it connects to the Ottawa River. It freezes every year, and thousands of people skate on it.

  • @joe88350

Leave it to a Jarhead to put em straight, and a machine gunner no less. LMAO. Love it.

  • as a hardcore hip-hop fan, i'm addicted to sarah and her beautiful music

  • @INT3RGALACTIK If you like Sarah check out Loreena McKennitt. She is another little known Canadian artist with huge talent. Check out the Nights from the Alhambra live concert that is here on Youtube. It's amazing, I highly recommend it . Sarah also has many excellent live DVDs. Mirrorball and Afterglow Live are my favs.

  • Lovely tribute to the original....

  • amazingly beautiful and touching!!!

  • one of my favorite sarah songs. She does it perfect!

  • @TheMNicole its not a sarah song. its a Joni Mitchell song. and she does a beautiful rendition btw.

  • @RenoRaider i know it isn't, but still one of my favorites

  • Skidmark, I agree. I am not so big on religion but she sings like an angel... And she pulls some beautiful things into the piano playing, just incredible craft, memory, time

  • This song has me thinking that I wish Sarah would sing R.E.M.'s "Find the River"

  • she is so beautiful, and so talented. great songwriter, great voice, great video, thanks!!!!

  • @joe88350 yes a river can in fact, freeze.

  • Check out the version by Peter White with Kenny Latimore singing. It's great.

  • im a ice skater i luv this song!!!

  • What does being a skater have to do with it?... It's a metaphor.

  • @supravista NO ONE ASKED YOU I SKATE TO IT CAUSE OF THE METAPHOR OK THANK YOU AND GOODBYE

  • @therealspoofchannel Sometimes I look back and see that I've been harsh. My apologies. Best wishes.

  • Her low notes are really great, but I still love Joni...

oh, only if they could've done something together

  • Great version! Very talented artist!!

  • Simply Lovely ~

And not only a gifted songstress, but an exellent musician as well.

    Thank you so much ~

  • lancitos, it's probably robert downey jr's version you hear at the store.

  • I was in a store one day and heard a guy sing this song. He sounded like the guy "Five for Fighting", but I searched every version and could not find it.

It's really good. Anyone know who the male singer is? It had to be a commercial recording.

Kind of a rough Michael McDonald, strong voice singer.

  • @lancitos Robert downey jnr sang thing song and so did michael ball :D

  • Only a few people can do this song justice.

No one sings it like the original,Joni.

But this, and Linda Ronstadt's are good versions of an incredible song.

A friend of mine said "Who but a genius could make Jingle Bells sound so sad?"

I replied that there are people at Christmas time who've lost loved ones, broken up, etc.

and this is just a reminder. A very stunning

    reminder.

  • @lancitos

corinne bailey rae and herbie hancock have my favorite version. joni still gets all the credit for coming up with it though, hopefully people don't overlook that.

  • LOL. I skate on the St. Lawrence River every year.

    They freeze.

  • i love her version better=D

  • well said dude!

    very good cover alright!

~man the best time of the year, i love christmas

  • Ahhh.....sweet surrender....love Sarah.

  • which performance is this?

  • this a great version ,if you like it check out.. linda ronstadts version of this song on her christmas album .. i love both of them

  • yall arent listening to the lyrics she said SHE WISHES she had a river she could skate away on......... SHE DOESNT HAVE ONE get it now?

  • This is a lovely version of the song, but I prefer Paul Byrom's version.

  • Yeah, you've posted this everywhere. We get it.

  • Since this is the 1st comment I've ever posted on youtube, I think you're mistaking me for someone else.

  • @badhairlife01 lol yeah i noticed that too!

  • However, this was posted 6 days prior to December 10th. Which, perhaps may seem magical to you when combined with the fact that his account was created that day as well. And regardless, who cares if he has or hasn't? It's his right to comment on the videos, that's why the comment section is here. It's for commenting on the video, not ragging on someone's feelings. So, in regards to the video, I must say McLachlan is truly inspirational. She, unlike many of today's artists has a soul. Wonderful.

  • A great song for lovers who care-take care to love your special one as life can change in a day in a big way.....

  • Love it again all over-a song by Joni Mitchell who was born in the small town of Fort Macleod

  • Rivers do freeze

  • u r retarded.. rivers do freeze!!!!!!!!

  • Let's look at the cover for what it's worth. The fact that she's covering Joni is a tribute in itself. And Sarah does an admirable job of covering the tune in her own style. The tune itself is beautiful because it reflects the beauty of the holdays but also the loneliness that comes with it as well. Lost love and pain at a time of rejoycing.

  • this song eases my mind i wish i had a river to skate away on and think about everything forever and ever..i wish/=

  • I wish I had a river...

  • The piano's notes sounds like raindrops on the floor and when it is too cold for the air, those notes turn to snowflakes silently falling twirling... And yet once I listen to the lyric, the selfishness does not belong to nature or the piano. And there is a lot of bitterness sung out of not seeing an end or a purpose to peace without peace being an icy river.

  • Very beautiful ...

How like my immortal beloved that God took her.

    Profound words ... Beautiful music!

    Thanks André

  • a realy good song, but only a joni mitchell cover

  • I love this song!! It makes me think of Christmas time!!

  • There's such a thing as "perfect pitch" and then there's just such a thing as "perfect." Sarah McLachlan's singing IS *that* such.

  • There's more talent in Canada than any other country Nth of Mexico!!!!!!

  • Ms Mc Lachlan could be singing anything, would not matter to me, oftentimes I do not listen to the lyrics. It is the voice that has a rather calming effect.

  • Truly remarkable...! She is amazing!

  • Sarah blows Joni away on this song!

  • Blasphemy, and I'm sure Sarah would agree on that.

  • Sorry, but NOBODY blows Joni away :-)

This is a beautiful version and Sara's got a tremendous voice... but Joni is Joni. When it comes to composing and performing, she's in a league of her own.

  • I wish I had her voice!

  • what a beautiful soothing voice...great song and the holidays are coming again...

  • this live version actually sounds better than the recording on sarah's cd wintersong.

  • She does everything with class....I love everything she does.

  • I grew up listening to folk music of all types, My mom loved Joni Mitchell, as do I, But Sarahs covers including the intonation changes and word changes really really defines this song as her own while paying tribute to Joni with sincere respect..Most excellent!

  • I love it wow great i didnt knew this song yet and im a fan for years but i havent been on the net for along time, can anybody please help me and send me the song please?Thank you

  • Takes some guts to cover Joni. This is a really good cover, well done!

The trouble is that in covering a Joni Mitchell song you are doomed to failure, because no one possesses the talent she does!

  • pretty damn good cover

  • I never thought I would like a version of anything of joni Mitchell's as well as her original versions, but this is lovely.

  • Beautiful but not Joanie, still amazing.

  • Love it! Thanks for posting. And thanks to you too MJ :)

  • What's not to love about this one? Sweet, soulful, and oh can't we all relate to the sentiment?

  • hell yea !

  • like the original Joni Mitchell version a little better, although this is a nice version

  • Das orginal ist viel besser

  • was this a dvd concert or something? the version is amazing as always, but it looks lip synced

  • Its just because the audio/video timing is off. Commonly occurs with some movie makers.

    It's not lip synced.

  • worning! dont rou full screen up or it will lock you in becouse of the dam visa advertizing

  • Did they use part of Jingle Bells to write this song or something? :-S

  • Finally I have a favorite Christmas song! Bless you, Sarah!

  • its originally from joni mitchel...

  • Oh, Canada! Take Care, God bless...

  • Absolutely perfect. What a performer.

  • What an amazing rendition... her voice was so made for this song

  • Jingle bells at the beginning lol

  • ♥

  • 3:28 sounds familiar :)

  • It does not get any better than this.

Joni, you have been homaged by the best.

  • INCREIBLE!

  • Beautiful, absolutely - but makes me appreciate so much more the genius of Joni Mitchell - lyrics and piano arrangement/melody

  • Yes I love Sarah, too! One of my all time favoite singers.

But this makes me appreciate the genius of Joni.

    Lovely cover, lovely voice

  • AWSOME VOICE.. AND SHES SOOO HOT!

  • Shes the greatest woman artist that i know !

    il loive her song !

  • This woman is gifted. Her voice is so amazing I can't get enough of it. She is - by far - the best singer/songwriter I know.

  • Beautiful soul...

  • this woman is so talented im jealous :-)

  • Thank you, Joni Mitchell for writing such a great song. props to Roseann cash for making it a hit.

  • great christmas cover...

  • Qué bonitos recuerdos me trae esta canción. ¨Y que bien canta la jodia..." es encantadora por todos sus poros.

    Felices Fiestas y año 2009.

  • I like the one by Robert downey Jr. Its just something about a man singing it that makes it perfect....But Sarah dose not sound that bad either!

  • this song is just perfect, I work at a place where they play Christmas music and no one is around, imaging this song on Christmas. It touches my heart...

  • Una canción preciosa. From Spain: Feliz Navidad!!!!

  • This song has beautiful lyrics and she sings it so well!

  • I love this song, it's awesome!

  • Notice how Joni play(ed) it her way, and Sarah, hers?

  • Yeah, but I like the way Sarah plays it more :)

  • i have the cd of christmas songs i do

  • I love this song and, I am sure that Sarah McLachlan is an angel.

  • i agree with you

i pretty sure she is an angel too

  • She is truly touched by God. Never heard a voice like that...

  • THIS SONG IS AMAZING..and so sad...

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

  • Just gorgeous!

  • I love Sarah---OMG she is so awesome!!!! I'm only 16 and i like her--- my mom dont ask then again hy would you?

  • I agree with emersonwells on this one. Sarah has a beautiful voice, and she really *hits* the high notes so well in her rendition of the song. I love this solo piano version more than the one from the CD. Sarah does a great job capturing the sadness of the end of a relationship and the loss of a partner you loved but couldn't quite live with. But I love Joni's original version more. Joni's has a bit more depth and variety in her expression. Her emotional and vocal range were so amazing.

  • i find this version, sader than Joni

  • why did she leave her baby for adoption?thats sad

    !!!

  • When she married Chuck Mitchell he promised to help take care of the baby. The marriage dissolved and she couldn't afford the baby. They reunited some thirty years later though so the story does have a happy ending. I suggest Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller for further Joni info. It's a gem!

  • thats sad =(

  • what is this song about? reply to me..

  • It was written in the beginnings of her personal breakdown. She'd been divorced for a while, left her baby, literally, to be adopted, left Graham Nash, who'd been her boyfriend for a couple of years. I've heard a version played when she was playing with James Taylor when they were in love, so I'm betting the male figure in this song is Graham Nash. I believe all of which went into this song. It's a tearjerker!

  • What's up with disabling the Embeds ... I'd like to get it please.

  • absolutely breathtaking...hypnotic!!!i have chills and tears!!

  • absolutely mesmerising performance.. we're used to nothing less from Ms. Machlachlan anyway!great job!

  • I'm a big fan of both Sarah and Joni and I must admit that Sarah's version is the better one. Probably because Sarah is the one with the better voice.

  • Dude ... you didn't know Joni. I think this is an amazing reproduction.

  • I have Artists that i prefer to listen to, and perform particular songs. However my personal taste doesnt preclude another artist from performing the song. I just probably wont be listening to it.

By the way if you feel the way you do why even bother listening to This One!

  • for my mom<3

  • good song!

  • amazing vocal, amazing song, loved it!

  • one of Joni's best songs; done very well here. thanks for posting.

  • OMG, sad song!!

  • pure talent , my dear angel

  • this song makes me cry i luv it so much!!!!!!!

  • I love this song so much!

  • Sarah McLachlan <33 she has a beautiful voice..

  • holy shit.. thats awesome! joni is god, but she's an angel

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice!

  • i think this is how my mom feels about christmas, wich is pretty sad.

  • aww shes the one in those sad animal commercials

  • She's just amazing...

  • Nobody SHOULD try to cover Joni - but here's the EXCEPTION - the reason being, Sarah McLaughlin is carrying on the torch, and it's taken this long for someone as talented to come along - all the other "songbirds" of the moment will be blips on the screen in 20 years - but not these two - Sarah GETS this song - and i'm a joni fan since 1967. Happy listening.

  • Well, I have to agree. This is the first cover I've heard of Joni that doesn't sound like a pale facsimile of the real thing. I'm not very familiar with Sarah but it appears that she's quite capable of taking the listener on an emotional journey rather than just singing the song.

  • Sarah McLachlan is an amazing singer. I'm a teen, a teenybopper pop loving. But when I here this song being sang...especially by Sarah, it's beautiful. Your right, she understands and its amazing.

  • i thing that sing so beautiful everything because her voice is magical thanks sara for yours songs

  • Nobody covers Joni like Sarah does.

First Blue, then River. I just wish she would do a whole record of Joni covers. She is the only artist who can can do Joni's songs any real justice! (Besides Joni herself offcourse;-))

  • i like this song... it was on ER. :]

  • Just to add to those who don't see to know, this is originally a Joni Mitchell song.

Not that she doesn't sing it beautifully. But she didn't write it.

  • Can she comes at Canada in New Brunswick! I love all her songs I want to see her live!!!

  • Just Thanks for posting this video. It´s deeply touching.

  • Just unspeakably amazing song ... !!! so deeply reaching lyrics and music. Bravo, Sarah!

  • how I love this song...

  • Canadian singer doing a Canadian song. Canada kicks ass! ;-)
