you know, on second thought, the beauty i was getting from this is totally shattered when i think of her pro-choice views. How can she talk about Christmas so elegantly and beautifully and then support the abortion of babies before they're born? totally ruins the song for me :(
I feel more like this AFTER Christmas, when all the fun is over and you realize that everything has to return back to what it was. The lights are turned off, the tree comes down, and you settle in for a cold and uneventful January, February, March........
@joe88350 I never comment on this youtube channel, BUT - anybody growing up in Fort McMurray Alberta Canada KNOWS a river freezes easily - in fact a very large wide fast flowing dangerous river Athabaska River freezes and we drive on it, skate on it, snowmobile ON IT....yes rivers freeze....especially in -30 and -45 C
For me this song is about a special girl in a cold and frozen place, with toasty warm pubs and cafes and skies that could make your heart break over and over again long after you're gone from the place. This song will always be about her and how I left my heart behind there with her forever.
The river she is referencing is the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Ontario. It connects to the Ottawa River, and the Rideau Canal freezes over every year and thousands of people skate on it.l

@INT3RGALACTIK If you like Sarah check out Loreena McKennitt. She is another little known Canadian artist with huge talent. Check out the Nights from the Alhambra live concert that is here on Youtube. It's amazing, I highly recommend it . Sarah also has many excellent live DVDs. Mirrorball and Afterglow Live are my favs.
Skidmark, I agree. I am not so big on religion but she sings like an angel... And she pulls some beautiful things into the piano playing, just incredible craft, memory, time
I was in a store one day and heard a guy sing this song. He sounded like the guy "Five for Fighting", but I searched every version and could not find it.
It's really good. Anyone know who the male singer is? It had to be a commercial recording.
Kind of a rough Michael McDonald, strong voice singer.
corinne bailey rae and herbie hancock have my favorite version. joni still gets all the credit for coming up with it though, hopefully people don't overlook that.
However, this was posted 6 days prior to December 10th. Which, perhaps may seem magical to you when combined with the fact that his account was created that day as well. And regardless, who cares if he has or hasn't? It's his right to comment on the videos, that's why the comment section is here. It's for commenting on the video, not ragging on someone's feelings. So, in regards to the video, I must say McLachlan is truly inspirational. She, unlike many of today's artists has a soul. Wonderful.
Let's look at the cover for what it's worth. The fact that she's covering Joni is a tribute in itself. And Sarah does an admirable job of covering the tune in her own style. The tune itself is beautiful because it reflects the beauty of the holdays but also the loneliness that comes with it as well. Lost love and pain at a time of rejoycing.
The piano's notes sounds like raindrops on the floor and when it is too cold for the air, those notes turn to snowflakes silently falling twirling... And yet once I listen to the lyric, the selfishness does not belong to nature or the piano. And there is a lot of bitterness sung out of not seeing an end or a purpose to peace without peace being an icy river.
Ms Mc Lachlan could be singing anything, would not matter to me, oftentimes I do not listen to the lyrics. It is the voice that has a rather calming effect.
This is a beautiful version and Sara's got a tremendous voice... but Joni is Joni. When it comes to composing and performing, she's in a league of her own.
I grew up listening to folk music of all types, My mom loved Joni Mitchell, as do I, But Sarahs covers including the intonation changes and word changes really really defines this song as her own while paying tribute to Joni with sincere respect..Most excellent!
I love it wow great i didnt knew this song yet and im a fan for years but i havent been on the net for along time, can anybody please help me and send me the song please?Thank you
this song is just perfect, I work at a place where they play Christmas music and no one is around, imaging this song on Christmas. It touches my heart...
I agree with emersonwells on this one. Sarah has a beautiful voice, and she really *hits* the high notes so well in her rendition of the song. I love this solo piano version more than the one from the CD. Sarah does a great job capturing the sadness of the end of a relationship and the loss of a partner you loved but couldn't quite live with. But I love Joni's original version more. Joni's has a bit more depth and variety in her expression. Her emotional and vocal range were so amazing.
When she married Chuck Mitchell he promised to help take care of the baby. The marriage dissolved and she couldn't afford the baby. They reunited some thirty years later though so the story does have a happy ending. I suggest Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller for further Joni info. It's a gem!
It was written in the beginnings of her personal breakdown. She'd been divorced for a while, left her baby, literally, to be adopted, left Graham Nash, who'd been her boyfriend for a couple of years. I've heard a version played when she was playing with James Taylor when they were in love, so I'm betting the male figure in this song is Graham Nash. I believe all of which went into this song. It's a tearjerker!
I'm a big fan of both Sarah and Joni and I must admit that Sarah's version is the better one. Probably because Sarah is the one with the better voice.
I have Artists that i prefer to listen to, and perform particular songs. However my personal taste doesnt preclude another artist from performing the song. I just probably wont be listening to it.

Nobody SHOULD try to cover Joni - but here's the EXCEPTION - the reason being, Sarah McLaughlin is carrying on the torch, and it's taken this long for someone as talented to come along - all the other "songbirds" of the moment will be blips on the screen in 20 years - but not these two - Sarah GETS this song - and i'm a joni fan since 1967. Happy listening.
Well, I have to agree. This is the first cover I've heard of Joni that doesn't sound like a pale facsimile of the real thing. I'm not very familiar with Sarah but it appears that she's quite capable of taking the listener on an emotional journey rather than just singing the song.
Sarah McLachlan is an amazing singer. I'm a teen, a teenybopper pop loving. But when I here this song being sang...especially by Sarah, it's beautiful. Your right, she understands and its amazing.

Only a few people can do this song justice.
No one sings it like the original,Joni.
But this, and Linda Ronstadt's are good versions of an incredible song.
A friend of mine said "Who but a genius could make Jingle Bells sound so sad?"
I replied that there are people at Christmas time who've lost loved ones, broken up, etc.
and this is just a reminder. A very stunning
reminder.
