It's amazing what you can do with a cheap old oil drum. I use a steel garbage can that just sits on top of a Weber-style kettle bbq. I cut the bottom off to let the smoke through, cut a door in the side so I can add more fuel without disturbing the food, fitted a baffle plate about half way up to keep it from getting too hot, and fitted a metal grille about 5" from the top for food to sit on.
Looks like you may have forgotten to oil the inner drum (seasoning) before lighting the fire. I may do a UDS one day, but the Double Chef will do for now.
This was the burn to remove any residue from the inside of the drum. I actually sprayed the inside down with some canola oil to season before cooking.
