  • Shawn lane level>Monster level>Master level>doesnt matter whats beneath

  • Everything he does it the equivalent of a 5 year old seeing his grandpa's "quarter from the ear" magic trick for the first time.

  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus

  • I watch SL vids not for the lesson...I can't even come close to playing his stuff, but for the sheer shock value.

  • You add a pack of ciggarettes cocaine sone alcohol & morphine or whatever you want to claim he might or might not did then you get worse health conditions plus the cortisol & painpills and then conditions of living like flouridated water polluted enviroment all of it was his downfall. To sit here and poke jojes about a man that was not over 300 lbs but 400lbs and then follow it by innaccurate comments then appologize then do doubletakes and then say he's a meaningless player etc.. Is not worth

  • @ShredGuitarUnite

bUT ONE Thing all U cats NOt mentioned is the indirect impact Lane had on Buckethead. Bucket used to smoke....but cos he saw what they were doing to him he quit..n this is why He still alive n Lane is not.

  • You know big guys and big people are easy targets, but if only someone had cared enough to put Lane on a 60 day Dark Green Juice Fast which would've involved him getting off everything then folliw it up with a complete Raw Fiood Diet you then could've not only seen a healthy guitar player that had a new lease on life but you'd see more phenomenal undeniably king of shred champion like performances. Let's go there in the debate ... How he could've lived rather then lie to ourselves about why he

  • @ShredGuitarUnite

Lane had psoriasis throughout his life and also suffered from psoriatic arthritis from the age of about thirteen. This did not impair his playing but caused difficulty walking, and required treatment with steroids which seriously affected his weight.

  • yes, but can he play Paranoid?

  • @loborneta good joke

  • @loborneta I BET HE CANT PLAY SMOKE ON THE WATER!

  • joana hill?

  • Consummate musician.

Lane + Holdsworth are signify the pinnacle of electric guitar.

  • 4:20

  • @xbcnfujv !

  • what scales does he use in this solo?

  • @superdanlewis

not a weighing scales thats for sure!

  • @HammerHeadedHammer hahahaha

  • 0:40 9 frets range.. How can I do that since I have small hand..

  • God is playing through Shawn's fingers.

  • Vi estas bonega gitaristo. Cxu la vortoj de la kanto estas esperante aux angle?

  • Lane's fingers are the shortest i've ever seen, how the fuck he can play like that?

  • @SuperCannibalistic Its not the size that counts its how you use it :P

  • @SuperCannibalistic In the Most Nicest Way Possible, as I deeply Respect Shawn Lane, But as he Is Overweight, His Fingers look shorter as they have more Fat around them.

  • @pooluke41 First, He was on steroids for most of his life, which causes massive weight gain. Second, He is no longer with us, so knocking his weight is a little harsh. Third, thin fingers don't make you a good guitar player.

  • @SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 Firstly I know he was on Steroids for Most of his life, Secondly How am I knocking him I'm saying he is overweight as an Observation, he is Obviously Fat, And I said I respect him and his Playing, and Lastly I didn't say Thin Fingers Make people Better players..

  • @SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 And don't say I Implied that thin Fingers make you A better player as I didn't...

  • when he goes over the chords of the solo shit sounds so wicked

  • I'm gonna play this for you in real time BAHWANWAWAAHAWNWAWHANAWAHNWAHAAA now, for those of you who didn't quite catch that- WTF.

  • I am not discussing his talent...but I do not like that chord progression, and the solo looked like many bits put together randomly...he could have done a better job on that

  • @bowlingfor1 hey man, did u ever listen to the original track????

  • @epicvsfvror I have never had the chance, I discovered him recently and I am truly ashamed of that :P... I should search for it

  • michael angel batio

  • @MrGahhhhhh

was highly influenced by shawn lane and has made attempts to sound like him that were epic failures on many occasions lol.

  • He reminds me A LOT of Ralphie May. Looks and even sounds like him. haha

  • shawn lane is ultimate , no one has nothing on shawn lane

  • How he knows that he can use a C bass with an E chord and an F bass with the A chord? Sorry , I dont know much muscal theory. All I know , I know it by ear. This is totally out of my league.

  • @epicus83 Well, you "know" you can use a certain chord with a certain bass because you can use ANY notes to make a chord, these chords just have a specific SOUND he wanted. This chord shape is called an augmented major 7 chord, but it's easy to understand them as saying "E over C" rather than "C augmented major 7" in a lesson.

  • @epicus83 Well there called inversions, theyre usually used to smooth out the bass line so its not jumping all over the place. Although here he used the two last inversions in the progression for that dissonant sound perhaps

  • Never seen anyone play the instrument with such ease and grace.

  • amazing ears...

  • Most people couldn't even play the chords properly nevermind the rest

  • His music isnt understood or appreciated by the majority of the population-the usual, common, normal person.

Its because it comes from an unusual, uncommon, abnormal mind. The mind of a genius.

He has the ability to make every guitarist on Earth feel at least somewhat inadequate

  • @loungefly1 He's the John Holmes of the guitar world (ba-dum-tish?)

  • 0:42 to 0:45

  • He was to genius for his own good.most of his music is so technical and over phrased that it don't flow.I've tryed to get people to listen to him but they can't comprehend it as music.only hardcore guitar enthusist can fathom the genius.most guitar vetrans can't play anything by him especialy a whole song.once you go to far outside the conveintions of music it's just called noise.

  • @spedmental i feel ya man, but thats how it has to be behind every instrument, guitar is just so young that we havent had time to appreciate it yet. Listen to coltrane's last album and stuff like that, its harmonically way more complex than this. In terms of melody writing on complex chord structures lane was really good but still could go even more further out. The reason why people dont call it music is because they don't understand it. Its like showing a psychologist a math theory

  • *Follows lesson*

Okay I can do this! :)

    0:42 hehehehehe.heh..eh...heh....waaaaa! D;

  • Anyone want to buy a whole bunch of guitars and amps!!!!!! I just don't know how this crazy stuff comes into someone's head!!!!!!!!!

  • amazing voice:)

  • that stretch is unhuman

  • 'The Faceless' is super heavily influenced by Shawn Lane. Listen to those chords at the end of this vid and the way he uses the tremelo. The Faceless is still a really amazing band though and I wish I heard of Shawn Lane years ago.

  • hmmm, i do recall a guido midget in my house...RAY!

  • the begining sounds like somthing from sonic like were he is in the casino

  • 0:16-0:19

"Why I did some of the things i did and possibly how to finger them" Lmfao....am i the only one that finds that hilarious? god i'm so immature

  • Lol the guitar like changed from yellow to orange/red RIGHT when he played super fast

  • he was a great player a gentleman and scary all the time.....

  • shawn lane was so good at guitar that it was known that if u go by his grave at 3 in the morning you can hear dimished scales being playd, it was also know that when he died he beat the devil in a guitar battle and now he made a guitar center n hell and now hes turned the whole place around and now there is a 2nd new york city down there

  • @austin1o5

It sounds sad to say that he's in Hell. Why not Heaven?

  • @austin1o5 I think he never had to move out of new york ;-)

  • @austin1o5

wouldn't it be a second memphis though.

  • @austin1o5 so let me get this straight.... youre saying shawn lane went to hell when he died. wow thats so nice of you

  • @austin1o5 no he visited the devil but when he had got there the devil(after learning that he was on his way) had long gone.

  • For a second there, I thought Ralphie May was teaching me guitar...

  • i mean its tricky but really caotic

  • Charvel 750

  • what king of guitar is that

  • @andrewkadar

    charval

  • i smell jazz fusion

  • anyone guesses why this song is called Esperanto?

  • alien music!

  • Check out Get You Back or something like that - I think that sounds typically nice while having some great technique and phrasing.

  • yeah that sounds more like it! thanks.

  • np :)

  • It doesn't sound awful. The piece is meant to sound that way.

  • that makes no sense

  • Arg, this makes no sense. He plays the solo part + chords in D minor here, but in D#min on the album. Wonder why, hahah.

  • Shawn is great! However, guitar manufactures like Charvel and Ibanez need to get some new body styles! Those old razor thin shredder guitars look so dated! Time for a new look guys!

  • I guess you cant deny the facts. 18.5 notes per second is ridiculous. Cant really beat that i guess.

  • @diabeticmonkey a 6 and a 9 group in 0.7 sec. Its actually about 20,5 nps heh :p

  • Paul Gilbert said it best, Shawn Lane has "Blazing, amazing phrasing!"

  • Petrucci and Loomis are both amazing. Holdsworth is still the all knowing omni presence of guitar though. :)

  • @diabeticmonkey I like Allan... alot! And I understand your opinion... but if we look at facts... Allan alternate picks 16 notes per sec... Shawn alt picks 18.5 nps... in my opinion, Shawn was not only the fastest and cleanest but he was so humble... he could never tell you he surpassed his hero... but that doesn't change the facts.

  • holdsworth is my favorite. everytime i hear him play i get chills

  • Chuck Norris is faster

  • hahahaha

  • The only person today that matches shawn lane is holdsworth. They are both one another plain compared to everyone else.

  • Holdsworth is the real genius if you ask me. Most of Shawns style evolved from Holdworths playing and sometimes you cant tell the difference...until Shawn opnens up that is, no-one can mistake that lol

  • @diabeticmonkey

John Petrucci & Jeff Loomis are a close second in my books.

  • his playing is so emotional..

  • i think comparing musicians is a really lame and senseless activity.. no offense, but Gilmour is Gilmour, and Lane is Lane.

  • But still..

    -Shawn lane, the insane

  • this is like amazing :D

  • 10 13 17 stretch that's ridiculous

  • his ideas are way out the box and amazing seriously can anyone relate what he just played to any genre? Shawn Lane was an amazing guitarist!

  • yeah he does have fast fingers. thats true.

  • how to finger them lol....

  • i dont know. that chord progression sounds way to dissonant for my likin.

  • Yer loadsof his stuff is dissonant. Its all down to taste. But no-one can deny he was such an exceptional guitar player and musican

  • Shawn Lane can destroy Chuck Norris....

  • ... using only his ass.

  • @YSBCITTAR no one can destroy chuck norris you know it :D

  • @YSBCITTAR - And MR T.

  • LOL that was funny

  • @YSBCITTAR Only by eating him

  • @deegz01 hahahahahahahahaha LOL

  • This guy had an incredible ear.

  • Umm exscuse me but.... WTF AT 0:42!!!

  • its a strech a shape with 3 fingers (1-2-4)

and its bascially goes...11(skip 3) than 15 (skip 3) 19 and hes is going back and forth between the G and B strings using legato...did i miss anything :)

  • Yeah it is 11-14-18. look at his fingers he doesn't stretch it to the 19th, otherwise we would've heard augmented madness instead. He has a lesson on here where he does the 11-15-19 and it doesn't sound like this

  • yeah good call i thought it was the other shape which i like way more

  • master of master.

  • what!????

even in death, this guy can play circles around slash.

shawn lane was a musical genius and one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.

  • @jakeshred THE greatest guitarist to ever live.

  • Shawn Lane ripping off Slash. Im sorry I cant even take that seriously ha ha

  • good, cause it was a joke

  • whoawhoa WHAAT did you just say?!

  • haha your kidding right?

  • Comment removed

  • really?maybe when you grow up and learn to take a joke, you will feel the same way about your comment....tossbag

  • a joke? I think you meant it and realized it wasnt gonna impress anyone, so you then say" haha, hey guys I was kidding" ..I will resist more name calling cause I made my point..

  • 0:41 thats just torture

  • Whats funny about him is that most shredders will tell the best way to practice is to use a metronome, start slow, and get faster. But he said in an interview once, "I never used a metronome, I always just tried to play everything as fast as possible, right off the bat" or something to that effect. Funny that 99% of other shredders preach the opposite, but can't come close to his speed...

  • Do you have the link to that interview?

  • watch?v=DhkbSBxPYcU

  • Thanks.

  • Yeah I have seen that video on youtube. What he did say was something along these lines "I used a metronome, but I would jump into a faster speed even if it was sloppy as hell..." something like that. watch?v=DhkbSBxPYcU

  • That's exactly what I've been doing in the past few weeks and yes, it has worked LOLOL

  • How does it get his guitar to sound almost acoustic?

  • Anybody who thinks Shawn Lane sucks doesn't know shit about the guitar. They might think they do, but they don't. Guitar is not all shred and heavy like most people think. Which is silly, because Shawn fuckin' shreds like no other. Just because it's not sweeping arpeggios like EVERYONE ELSE PLAYS doesn't mean it's not good guitar. It's insane what this guy does.

  • Funny you mention that RIGHT after I came from a video of the "amazing" guitarist Syn.

I told one of the kids who worships bands like Bullet for My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold to look up Shawn Lane, then they begun yelling at me and then started bragging about how Syn went to college and studied jazz. I then discovered Syn dropped out half a year later because he thought it was too hard.

Hey if those kids want to be ignorant and not become enlightened by Shawn Lane it's their fault right?

  • Is there actually anyone anywhere that has heard Shawn play that thinks he sucks?.MAn, such a person would have to be nutz!. Shawn could play sweeping , MAlmsteenian style arpeggios....but he could do everything else too....he didnt have to be one dimensional like a lot of other guitarists. I think we are on the same page, yes?.

  • dude it's not that simple

i think people think he sucks because of the style he plays, fusion, whitch i find very hard to understant you know, i find it too complex to truly apreciate it and i'm pretty sure most people think so too

but to say that he sucks it's just plain ignorance i mean common just look at that shit! i really belive that in terms of skill shawn lane is the best in the world

  • Yes, he WAS the best in the world. Not only a genius in guitar, but in all characteristics. Everybody that knew his personally would say the exact same thing. The most brilliant man anyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing knew.

  • along with steve howe of course. hes created some of the most incredible music ive ever heard. look him up

  • @felphero Anyone that says he sucks is either deaf of a troll child.

  • Very thought provoking material.

    very exploratory.

    human intelligence = oxymoron

  • you sound like a peaceful monk

  • you dont get high on steroids btw

  • ahahha what a chode eh?

  • He has such small hands.

  • It makes me feel better that out of all guitarists to have smaller hands, it's Shawn Lane.

  • actually it looks like he had medium size hands...

  • damn....every good musician or intellectual person that could have altered the world in a good way died at a young age. god fucking dammit.

  • i remember the day he passed away... i was so sad when i read about it... what a loss...

  • it was my birthday....

  • sold their souls for talent, duh.

    j/k

Awesome guitarist, up there with holdsworth imo.

  • anyone know what guitar he is using?

  • charvel 750xl

  • Thanks!

  • an awesome one

  • Anybody know what albums he played this kind of style on??

  • ur ' the powers of ten ' album maybe? sorry for being sarcastic, but he mentions it at the very start?

  • Average human intelligence has declined over the past 20 yrs... as you may discern by reading some of these comments, but Shawn was a genius, both intellectually and musically... rip great one

  • Where have you determined that "FACT" from? Human intelligence declining over the past 2 decades? On what basis do you make such a fantastic and spurious statement?

  • Comment removed

  • Hes above god

also a notch or two above Mr T

and thats saying something ! but sreiously, most incredible musician to grace all us average humans in a long long time

  • Wut? Maybe you want it to sound a certain way. Echo is good in some situations.

  • delay makes it sound even faster and then you wont get clear of whats he really playing. and if you use wah then no one hears any of you are playing so no one wont hear you make mistakes

  • Cant anyone play a solo without the damn echo anymore?

  • Could be worse. He could be using a wah like everyone does now.

  • actually

the echo creates a fake impression of a stereo sound so to make it sound good a little bit of echo is a constant.

  • echo helps combat the tinny quality recording through a cheap mic gives perhaps?

  • shawn lane was a fantastic player he wasn't like all the others who felt they had to shred as fast as they could ( he could out shred most people)he has a great sense of melody

  • as much as I'd like to like shawn his playing is too bizarre and just sounds like random notes thrown together.

  • well it is jazz

  • FUSION, hehe. You would have to have him play a few measures ahead then fall back, then play in time for a minute, then play behind, then catch up, then play out of key, then intentionally make noise as you play something simple so it sounds sloppy then go back to the root chord for a second then play behind the tempo and then hold a
