@CurseoftheGarrett I could give you long story, but they had some pretty abusive builds in 7th ed and have ridiculously underpriced units and items. Just to name a few. "war hydra", "ring of hotek", "pendant of kaleth", "double rbt + black dragon with unkillable dread lord build" etc. In the hands of any competent tournament players dark elves can hand a very one sided spanking. However, 8th edition is a different kettle of fish, so I'll reserve judgement till for a while :D

his army isnt cheap or overpowered; HE are meant to be a special unit focused army; you cant blame him for playing a legal army that emphasizes more special units than core...

at all the people who say his army is overpowered becuz it has to many special units and not many core units aside from archers--one of the main strengths of the HE is that they are able to take several special units and fewer core units//when you say manipulating one of your armies strengths is stupid and overpowered, that just doesn't make sense; GW wouldn't have made it legal to take so few core units and so many special units if it was uncharacteristic of the army

In all fairness to Jensoffer I think this army was a bit too over powered for orcs and gobbos. I collect high elves don't underestimate spearmen 3 ranks first strike

@milodotnet true I agree ive seen worse too but this is a orc army they are fighting, just count up the amount of special units the high elves have...no spearmen....really. My point is high elves tend to have few units anyway, and all his core choices are archers in his own words "unfortunally he has large units...units too big or tough to whittle down with fire."

@Jensoffer I wouldn't agree that high elves are over powered (not when compared to dark elves, vc or daemons), but orcs do struggle, mainly due to animosity imo.

@milodotnet I belioeve Orcs and Goblins are an amazing and incredibly fun race to play. They either get raped or dominate, alost never anything inbetween. They have powerful Magick and the Waaagh! or even any normal Animosity roll can be turned into a useful move, even when unexpected.

okay i think you should have continuisly charged the enemy with your dragon princes cos in a match i did i assaulted one group with my silver helms won and failed to catch them because my silver helms kept on crashing into other enemy units

AND THAT KEPT ON HAPPENING! all through the mind you it was very benificial as i kept on winning with the silver helms

hint put a character in with the unit and they'll practically be invivcible

i've only just started using the high elves in fact i'm knew to the game completly but spearmen would be useful because of their ability to fight with THREE! ranks and not just the normal 2 plus they are cheaper than archers.

plus, using my experience form 40k i think you used too many heavy weps

spearmen look good on paper, but I've never seen them actually kill much, unless you get lucky and get into a scrap with the right kind of unit. They are ok as a mage bunker, to hold quarters or in a pickle to bait and flee with.

I'm not sure I understood the 40k weapons reference, do you mean I used to many elite units?

After all the errors you were analysing yourself as making I was quite surprised the game ended in a draw - I thought the orcs were massacreing you.

Is the Elf army list therefore very overpowered? (i've heard this on forumes).

It can be overpowered, but that usually involves a star dragon in the list, and I tend to avoid fielding mine in most games.

High elves weaknesses are that they have expensive troops with low toughness and poor armour saves . This leads to them being

a) outnumbered

b) vulnerable to magic and shooting

c) vulnerable to being flanked.

depending on how your opponent you may or may not be able to exploit some of these

xbow mean are totally devasting to high elf infantry. You should try keep them alive by diverting or killing the he troops that are rushing them. dark riders are for that job. i highly recommend them

@crazy00metal buy whatever takes your fancy, most things in the orc and goblin list are useful (although nothing is truly amazing). Fanatics are great but you might like to field more units. My fave's are squig hoppers. Spear cukkas are awesome too.

Squig herds are also pretty good value for points, and having ItP units always helps. As babysan said spear chukkas are great for their points, they won't always kill things, but when they do they really make their points back, Whats also nice is wolf riders, cheap mobile fast cav is always nice.

The OnG player appeared to be keeping his unplayed fanatics on the side of the table in plain sight! If that's true, that's an error. You can't let your opponent know how many of those you're bringing (if any).

Tomb Kings are going to get revamped aftr the skaven and Beasts of chaos armies. I suggest you wait a while before buying them. Anyways it's probably going to take a year or so to see the new army book come out so it's up to you, high elves are pretty versatile but tomb kings with casket are always scary. Go with what you prefer not what people tell you to take.

If you're gonna invest in an army take one you like.

Thats a long discussion, but some quick things that come to mind for High elves: Asf, versatile and elite troops, mobility, but very fragile with low saves and toughness. Tomb Kings has very reliable magic, also can be mobile, and of course being undead has a host of benefits. Tomb King basic troops are pretty poor in combat though.

imho ASF is not that great... ok... u get the chance to deal damage first but its not a guaranteed that you are gonna actually kill and when that happens you are in troubles with basic To 3 models and not the very best saves of the game, in elves case i actually like lots more the dark elves hatred rule

and The big problem with TK right now is that when VC came at bay with their new summoning spells, the TK summon became nearly useless. You have to spend over 40% or even more of your points in your characters leaving you low on everything else, until the new TK are released (God knows when) it will be hard to play with them. again thats imho

ASF does help counter the elves low T and low armor to some degree, but you shouldn't rely on that to win your battles.

I hear TK are being released in 2010, and they can be challenging army to use, but that shouldn't but people off using them if they like the theme.

If you looking for an easy army to play get Daemons or Vamps :D

I've been playing for over 8 years now, Orc & Goblins, Lizardmen and Chaow Warriors are my fav armies (and the ones i own) and yeah for sometime i was tempted to play daemons but they are not easy to play with... they play all by themselves thats too sad that's why i chose in the end chaos warriors ^_^ anyways all i was trying establish was what i thought it was the major disadvantage for each army.

depends alot on what your looking for personally. If you looking for a more "powerful" army, dark elves are considered more powerful than tomb kings, although it always depends on the general :D

I reckon you could build a decent chaos warrior army for low cost. Most of the kits are plastic. And they look damn good.

Skaven could cost you a lot because that army requires a LOT of troops. In other words your going to need lots and lots of models. Chaos on the other hand doesn't need very many models (in comparison to other armies) to be effective.

Yeah, what SubTukkZero said. Also - rumor has it that the next fantasy army book to get redone for 7th ed will be Skaven. So I would wait and see what happens there.

Chaos warriors are very cool tho. Also they don't like dying (did someone say 2+ save infantry? Yes Please)

Dogs are cool, only problem is alot of em are lead and not as available as the more mainstream armies. Perhaps the empire is also a more economical option these days as many of the troops are plastic now as well. And they are looking better than they used too... most other armies require significant investment in lead models imo

it can be, but try to steer clear from gw's page. i have seen pages (in denmark only sadly :( )) i have been able to save quite a bit of money on it. my best advice would be to stick ur nose out and try to sniff around a bit.

I have been following your battle reports ever since you started posting them and I have to say that you have become progressively better at narrating the turns and tactics of the game.

If you re-watch some of your earlier ones you will notice you seemed to show some difficulty in forming your explanations.

Not sure if you started making notes for the vids or what, but good job.

Ya! good thing that you keep posting new videos. Since I've been researching on what to buy for my high elves army these kind of give me some ideas on how to use my helfs after I start playing.(maybe in a year) and after this definately 2 eagels instead of fast cavalry(no room to manuver them on the standard table size) But thumbs up! :)

Thanks, I do think 2 eagles are very effective (almost stock standard in some games), but even with 1 it sometimes frustrates my opponents to tears so be careful not to overdo it ;)
