@pieszczoch021 It's possible because she's in love with her fantasies rather than with the real man. For all Don Alejandro's sorrow over Diego's apparent cowardliness in season 1, he loved Diego enough to recognize him as Zorro. By unmasking himself, Diego would have precluded himself from being able to help the peons, vaqueros, etc., against injustice, either as Zorro or as Don Diego. Anyone familiar with Polish history would recognize the necessity of his remaining masked. ;-)

@ace51686 Not true that everybody wins. Alejandro was right: the people of California would have lost. And could Anna Maria really have changed her sisterly feelings toward Diego so easily? Once Zorro's identity is revealed, she's stuck with her 'brother' Diego. I could imagine that he'd have to wear the Zorro costume in the bedroom to turn her on! Kinda kinky :-)

As much as I love the idea that Diego's father showed that he knew who Zorro was, I would have liked it better if Diego had told Annamaria that he was Zorro. I think she would have picked Diego on the spot if he had.

@Torie3593 I disagree. I think Anna Maria is a spoiled rich girl, and unlike Diego, cares little or nothing for the peons, vaqueros, and 'lower class' people of California. She loves Zorro for his glamor. She thinks of herself and not of justice not served for everyone. I also do not think it is accidental that his father, who loved Diego for himself, was able to see he was Zorro early on. If Anna Maria had loved Diego, I think her love for him would have 'unmasked' Zorro for her as well.

Yeah, she deserved that. Diego is the real man behind the mask. If she knew Diego and didn't love him already it would be pretty hypocritical if she decided she loved him after he revealed himself as Zorro.

I'm starting to notice they really like making big developments in episodes that are a multiple of 13. In 1x13, Monastario was arrested, in 1x26 the Magistrate died, and we had the end of the Eagle arc in 1x39, and now the end of the Monterey business and we find out Alejandro knows Diego is Zorro.

Ana Maria is probably my least favorite female Zorro character. The actress isn't that compelling and the character is written as sort of haughty and not too bright. Plus it's annoying how everyone fawns over her. As far as I'm concerned Diego dodged a serious bullet. On the other hand, my favorite female characters: Raquel Toledano, Teresa, and Maria. Though of actual love interests Rosarita from Season 1 is probably the only one I don't mind.

@Nanyuki1989 This had me thinking too. Diego doesn't seem to believe he's God's gift to California. Or a "hero." It's just that he can't stand by and watch people get hurt. Zorro is a way to help when nothing else works. There's a kind of modesty about him. Bernardo is always egging him to become Zorro, and Diego often pushes back.

2:06-2:12 Diego thinks they're both going to die, I think he fights more to save Bernardo. The people he loves are more important than his life -- or Zorro. So...

I agree. Having the hero marry the damsel-in-distress archetype is good as a fairy tale, but realistically Ana Maria was not in love with Diego so it never would've worked out.

If Diego did get married, I'd imagine it'd be to someone who found out his identity on her own and/or worked with him as a partner for a time. Mainly because for Zorro I'd imagine his wife would need a strong will and a mind of her own to fit with his lifestyle.

I just LOVE this story! One shoe drops, but now there's another. What do you want to bet Anna Maria is the woman Diego eventually marries? In "Zorro and Son", they never gave the name of his deceased wife.

The few girls I liked from this series were Raquel Toledano, Theresa, Magdalena and Moneta(from the later episodes). Come to think of it, it's a shame Moneta and Diego were just good friends and nothing more. She's beautiful and not afraid to speak her mind. She's also very considerate for others like Garcia, and doesn't swoon over Zorro but still admires him greatly.

Actually, I wasn't keen on any of Zorro's girl friends and female aquaintances, including Anna Maria. Realistically, Diego probably married someone else entirely who we never met.

I'm a bit disappointed that they don't actually show the big kiss between Anna Maria and Zorro. However, this episode is by far one of the best ones created. :)

I have no doubt that if she's the girl he marries in the future (and all versions of the story have Diego eventually married) , she would have to be in on the secret of Zorro like the rest of the family. And i count Bernardo as family.

Way back in Season One, there were at least two moments. Diego did slip once on something minor, and Alejandro picked up on it. And when he'd been shot, he came stumbling out the back of Zorro's cave - and feverish as he was, he had to have been familiar with that place. You can be sure he knew the layout of his own house as well as Diego, whatever Diego may have thought.
