I don't know if they stil pay guys for shows based on percentage of gate but back then they did. You got paid based on your position on the show, and of course the bigger the overall gate, the more money you'd get. To give an example, Paul Orndorff permanently damaged his arm rather than take time off to heal, because the gates he drew with Hogan were astronomical.

A genuine crossover celebrity. Made tons of money for himself, his opponents, his coworkers, and his bosses. Had memorable Wrestlemania main events against Piper, Andre, Savage, and Warrior. Who gives a crap if Flair had better workrate. The business is about making the fans care and want to buy a ticket to the show.
