This song "Tong Poo" is from YMO's album "Yellow Magic Orchestra", released in 1978, years before the chiptune music scene began. Many early video game and chiptune musicians were heavily inspired by YMO, including many Arcade, PC-88, Commodore 64, NES, Game Boy and SNES music composers. For example, the 1979 YMO song "Rydeen" was imitated in many video games in the 80s (including arcades and C64) to early 90s (SNES). This song "Tong Poo" even influenced the Tetris theme.
Yes, the Tetris theme is a cover version of the Russian folk song Korobeyniki. However, that doesn't mean it was the only influence on the song. I read an article that suggested that Tong Poo was an influence on the Tetris theme, and listening to both, the similarities seem quite obvious to me. The way I see it, the Tetris theme is like a Tong Poo style cover version of Korobeyniki. On a side note, Tong Poo was also influenced by folk music, specifically Chinese folk music.
if any of you were wondering how the effects like at :45 and 3:25 were done, its just ordinary highlighter marker on the emulsion side of 35 mm film :]
It's so interesting how the 16 and initial 32-bit era of gaming took quite a bit of influence from this music. Listen to the early Sonic the Hedgehog games' music, and tell me that doesn't sound like YMO.
this was sooo ahead of it's time! I bought it for behind the mask but this was far superior, watched Sakamoto go on to greater things, I like to think he had a great part in my life
These guys are really genious, true pioneers of synth-pop/electro-pop .... Btw : Does anyone knows the name of the games at 0:10 and 1:11, remembers me something in the PONG era ....
@jorcyd The one at 0:10 is Blasto!, a game by Sega/Gremlin. It's supposed to be pretty common in japan, but the US version is pretty rare. The game is remarkably addictive even though it is so simple.
Kraftwerk were not the first electronic pop musicians either. Nevertheless, both Kraftwerk and YMO were definitely pioneers of electropop music.
If we're talking about the synth-pop genre, however, then Kraftwerk's music is not really synth-pop, which more often refers to the distinct style of electronic pop music introduced by YMO in the late 70s and popularized by UK acts (like Gary Numan, Japan, Duran Duran, Human League, etc.) in the early 80s.
@Jagged85 Jazz also was key part of the synth develop.Search {Return To Forever- Dayride} {Return To Forever- Sofistifunk} {Chameleon Pt. 1} {Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan: Sonik Re-entry} you'll be shocked to death!!
You have no idea how much these guys influenced Japanese pop culture in the early 80's. Even to this day you can still hear their influence in most 80's,90's video games. Art imitates life imitates art.
when I got a record player 3 years ago for my birthday, I looked through all 1500 of my dads records to find a cool one to play, this is the one that caught my eye and it has been a favourite ever since.
I seem to have some strange intermediate mix of the album, it has the American Cover, Yellow Clear Vinyl, but the Mix is much closer to the Japanese version, without the extra reverb or vocals over Tong Poo.
It's pretty amazing there are artists out there today making dance music that's very similar to this in style. I was completely unaware of YMO until mere minutes ago, I must now go and buy lots of albums!
I heard the name Yellow Magic Orchestra and that they'd been on Soul Train and I had to check out a video. I'm very glad I did even though the first video I saw was Ryuichi Sakamoto with his acoustic trio playing Thousand Knives. It's one of my favorites.
They sure are! apart from there continued solo career's, hosono and takahashi-san formed 'sketch show' in early 2000's. Then ryuichi sakamoto joined them to form 'HAS/YMO'. Takahashi also formed a new project 'Pupa' and i have to say the album is terrific. YMO played live in '08 in london (i met them and have photo's and video) although it was more hasymo material that was played. There still going strong!
@agfagaevart This coming June YMO will be perfoming together at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles - first time in LA since 1979, I think. If possible, I hope to be in the audience. It's one of my dreams to hear them perform live and in person. Spectacular talent and amazing sounds.
@n64wilbert their first alubum including this song came out in november 1978 (not 1979!). but i think the video was produced in 1979 coz it contains US '79 mix.
Just to make people aware. I am getting rather tired of ludicrous, childish and in some cases racist remarks on my channel. This is a page for fans and new (sensible) fans. Worst case scenerio would be this page 'goes totally'. Mentality these days leaves a lot to be desired :/
YMO are simply brilliant. the drumming is so tight, sounds like a drum machine with just a tiny hint of human swing. electronic music in the late 70s was really a turning point for humanity in that music being made in different corners of the earth sounded pretty much the same, based on a new set of universal ideas. special credit must go to Japan for giving us Korg, Roland, Yamaha etc -the instruments needed for all this great music. i'd love to know who invented the tr-808, he deserve a nobel.
Wow. I love YMO. They were/are so freaking brilliant. Sometimes I wish I would have been there in '79 to see them play live when it first came out. I have to admit that I like the non-US version better (without the lyrics).
Question. What video game is that with the little Juggler? Thanks for putting this up.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I was at school when i first got my first 12" single (firecracker/technopolis) and never looked back. Now i'm 43 and still love them just as much. The fact i met them this year and got there autographs was the icing on the cake for me!
Kraftwerk were also a firm favourite but there lack of regular albums and there seemingly 'happy to play in the studio while fans craved albums for years' annoyed me. Even Karl bartos got bored and formed 'Elektric Music' in the 90s tho that was short lived as well. Think i'll stick with ymo tyvm :)
As for the video game you asked about, i thought it was 'actrobat' at first but can confirm that it was called 'Gypsy Juggler' [1978]. Type gypsy juggler into youtube as there is a clip showing the game in action. The roms are also available if you use M.A.M.E :] take care!
Thanks a mil! I checked out the Gypsy Juggler vid. Where/how did you meet them? I met my favorite contemporary Jazz pianist recently (Hiromi) and spoke to her for about 10 minutes. i had so much to say, but I didn't want to hinder her from interacting with other fans ha!
I was joking. I was referring to the coloured 'glowing' parts on the video. Looks very similar to how those large pens write, the thick marker pens to highlight text ;) nvm!

Yes, the Tetris theme is a cover version of the Russian folk song Korobeyniki. However, that doesn't mean it was the only influence on the song.
