Watch the news videos on Turtle Man of Kentucky and he says he does this to NOT hurt or kill them. Farmers hire him to get turles out of their ponds where they bite their cows and horses.

What farmers need to understand is that the turtles are in no case a menace. As adults, they are pretty much herbivores. The only kind of meat that the turtles actively feed on is carrion. Maybe once in a blue moon they could catch a fish, but they would rather just graze along the bottom. These turtles would never bite a cow or horse. When in the water, these turtles retreat rather than confront. If you take a look anatomically at these turtles, they have a greatly reduced plastron

(bottom of the shell = plastron) and so when they are on land they feel especially vulnerable, and thus must take up an aggressive demeanor to compensate for this vulnerability. Ever notice how these turtles are not attacking him when he is grabbing them under water? They would rather try and swim away! Snapping turtle are not effective predators. They are a very large turtle, very slow moving. Yes, they may be able to ambush 1 fish, a single fish, IF they lie motionless for hours on end. Snappers should never be picked up by their tail as it can severely injure their spinal column. Use thick gloves and pick them up by the back of their shell. Throwing turtles is also not a good thing especially if you are claiming to be helping them.
