Written by George Schroder, 1975. I don't know if he ever recorded it himself, but Kate Wolf and her friends performed it beautifully. I love the mandolin in this song.
Kate wolf was of these hills, a tradition I have seen growing up in these golden rolling hills of California. She knew them well, she was truly an amazing woman.
So heartfelt and lovely and real are her songs, vocals and her presence. Glad to encounter her in action. Her recordings are meant for a larger audience, over time. :{ ) Nanci Griffith is cool too!!

@mushacles HEY! Yah Your right!!! Maybe they heard it in the past and it stuck and they thought they wrote it later. I am trying to write some songs and I always wonder if I'm inadvertently ripping off a tune from my past.
KQED assembled a medley of songs about California, and shared it with NPR today, January 25. They incorrectly named this song as "The Red Tailed Hawk."
See: "The Mix: Beyond California Dreamin'"
Great to see Nina again from so far away - wow, that brings back memories!
Thank you for this. I had the honor of knowing her briefly in the 80's. A fellow-minstrel she'd known for many years in San Francisco was in a folk-duo with me in Sonoma (circa 83-84). I just wanted to thank you for making the halcyon days in West Marin, Sonoma, & Mendocino live again. I cry when I see her, but not for myself; it is for the less fortunate souls who didn't experience her magic in-person. Unselfish and STRONG. Brother Warrior, Eyes of a Painter. There WAS gold in California Kate
spreading messages of love and light.. the human experience.. she was so before her time spiritually.. before this planet could really digest her message. I am grateful for these video's.. my children and I were introduced to her by a beautiful Native American man in the golden rolling hills of California.. our life is forever richer for it.
Thank you for posting these videos. They are powerful and beautiful.. just like Kate.

I've lived in NoCal since 1975 and love folk music of her style but never heard of her until last year through Pandora. Last June I went to her memorial concert in Laytonville and plan to attend again in 2011. I can't seem to get her tunes out of my head. But then I really don't want to.
I met Kate in the late 80's,just before she became sick. She was as wonderful as she seems.....Miss her.Nina Gerber is still playing, what a fabulous talent she is.
I'm glad to have discovered Kate Wolf's music this year. Safe at Anchor was the album I found. This is a remarkable record! Currently, I'm seeking her other releases. She was amongst the best and most talented.
Thank you for posting. I was 17 when my mom was dx with lymphoma; she was 41. For seven years, until she passed, Kate Wolf was our "therapy" (and some Mary McCaslin along the way as well). Thirteen years now have passed, but the songs still have the same effect...
It is so great to see some of Kate on You Tube. The Kate Wolf Festival will be happening at the end of June in Laytonville, CA. Her family continues to sell her music at the festival, but fail to realize that if they put some stuff on You Tube, more people would discover her, and they in turn would sell more of her recordings.
Her song "Across the Great Divide" is one of her masterpieces, and while other people cover it, it would be nice to turn folks on to her singing it.
I remember seeing Nina Gerber play the mandolin back in the 70's. She plays guitar now .... just as beautifully. Kate's voice and her mandolin are beautiful!
@aneffie53 She touches me so deep. Her hamonies plunge through my anus and come shooting straight out of my mouth like a laser beam destined for the clouds.
Don't have words to describe this wonderful post. Just to say thanks a million for sharing this, touched me deeply, wonderful for me to discover this amazing lady, which I discovered via Nanci's version of Across the Great Divide.
I don't think anybody evokes Northern California like Kate did. She *got* it. Bless her, she had the most tranquil, comforting, gentle voice I've ever heard. I miss her. When Kate died, a well-meaning friend of mine who knew I loved her music tried to give me the news, but she'd misheard and thought it was the English singer-songwriter Kate Bush who had died. I have to tell you-I didn't feel ANY better when I learned who was really gone. If possible, I felt even worse....still do. XO Kate Wolf!
Yep! Once upon a time most well known performers had talent. Whatever happened to that? Now there are the Swift & Cyrus type that can hardly carry a tune! Kate and Nina were great together. We lost Kate to Leukemia, but Nina's is still in the business.
I spent an afternoon with Kate in the late 70s and listened to her play. It was at an antique show in northern California. I was the only one who stopped by to listen to her. We chatted all afternoon and I fell in love with her and her music that day.
I grew up in Northern California, where Kate was born. I listened to Kate's music for years and one of my biggest regrets is that I never got around to seeing her in concert. She performed so many times right in my backyard. I always said "one of these days", and then she was gone. She truly was a one-of-a-kind artist.
This song is just incredible! I just love Kate's music and this song is one of my favourites. I have listened to Kate's music for a long time but sadly never had a chance to see her in concert. It is wonderful to finally see Kate on this video. Kate also accompanied by fantastic musician Nina Gerber...she is absolutely a great musician and also great playing of Rick Byars.
Great song - easy to play (Am and G). Lovely voice - awesome lyrics. My favourite Kate song is probably, 'The Wind Blows Wild'. I'd love to see her perform it if it's available anywhere.
Amen, and Amen!! I have always loved Kate Wolf. Takes me back many years. She had a beautiful voice! Used to go to the Winnipeg Folk Festival and see her perform there. Those were the good old days!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for sharing your Kate Wolf footage. It's wonderful to see and hear her again ... so many people need to learn about Kate. I am forever grateful to you for these videos.
