I saw this film on your recommendation and it blowed, and not in a 400 Blows type of way. Some of those students were such douche bags "Oh my God! Teachers Cat is missing! I can't breathe!" LOL, get the fuck outta here! haha. This could be the worst Kurosawa I've seen. Now I see why I took my time coming around to this. Sorry yo, I don't see the magic.
you know whats weird...i said the same thing when i first saw it lol
i saw it again 3 years after and it just hit me more than any other kurosawa....im not a huge kurosawa fan in general anyway...i always prefered his non-period movies...like ikiru, the bad sleep well ect....and im a sucker for quiet observation.... this film was pretty much a massive observation that didnt really go anywhere but yeah i understand totally what u mean tho...the students i thought were sometimes semi retarded too
oh! you like this movie? I find this so strange that a western person would like it, it is so much based on Japanese culture. very good to see more people like Kurosawa's later movies
I completely agree with you about this movie, as it's also my favorite Kurosawa film. I think at the end of his life he just brought such wisdom and perspective to this film, and he also demonstrated what I consider his true talent, creating perfect scenes. The final scene was quite literally flawless, a feat which few other directors can achieve. I also agree that it is often difficult to explain this movie to other people. I thought you did a terrific job all the same.
Kurosawa is one of my favorites too... but back home I couldn't grab much of his tapes.. But I was able to watch a part of it... Sorry about the late comment but I will write something only after watching the whole movie.. if I can get a DVD... By the way check out movies by Shyam Benegal(another great bengali filmmaker)..
ive seen only one by Benegal i think it was the inner voice...which was awesome....I look out for more...yeah i love all kurosawas stuff, but for some reason madadayo made the bigger impression on me..
That's because he was a big fan of Satyajit Ray's work ..he even made a documentary about Satyajit Ray called Satyajit Ray,Filmmaker(1982). Try to find Benegal's Kalyug(1981).. I think you would like it.
yeeeeaaaahhhh......

Shhyam Benegal is ethnically Maharashtrian and not Bengali. To my knowledge he hasn't made any Bengali language film either.

no i dont think he has either...yet in terms of his filming aesthetics he is very simular to Ray and even more simular to early Ghatak
