Holy fuck. I never thought of the fact that he could still be dreaming when he tries out the sedative! I hate you. TOO MANY THEORIES AND POSSIBLITIES!!!
inception was quite bad. I dont know why people were confused at the end. They musn't be too bright. You dont see it fall but you see & hear it fricking wobble. In never ever wobbles in the dream world. If nolan wanted to make it ambiguous he should have shot it diffirently. ie dont show the audience it wobble and dont let them hear it wobble. IT WOBBLES ITS ON ITS WAY DOWN i can draw no other conclusion its reality not a dream at the end. I dont even know why its a talking point.
@skeptic9876 Well try this on for size; that entire last scene doesn't matter, and is one of the film's MANY red herrings- this is because a totem only tells you if you're trapped in SOMEONE ELSE'S DREAM, as they would not be able to replicate it's specific dimensions, etc... but, if Mal was right and Cobb is trapped in HIS OWN MIND, well, then, it tells us nothing because of course his own subconscious would know it's dimensions, and whether or not it's supposed to fall, etc...
@skeptic9876 ...it only serves to gauge what he BELIEVES to be true, giving us, the viewers, an insight into Cobb's state of mind, but nothing more- thus he could very well still be dreaming at the end of the film, and could have been asleep for any if not ALL of the film. The point reall is that, regardless, in the end he finds happiness.
@skeptic9876 There's really MUCH more to it than that, I recommend you go back for another viewing with a more open frame of mind; don't just take everything at face value and you'll realize that, really, it's a great movie on many levels, not just the literal dream ones shown to us in the film.
cobb made i outta of limbo by letting his wife go but he didnt leave with that architect girl because he had to save that chinese dudes life so he went back into limbo got him out and the both woke up. you can tell that he was in reality because they way people speak. his grandad wasnt even home the last time he saw the back of the kids head. the thud at the end let u know it fell over and they made it go black so it would make you think
…and so, whether or not the totem fell at the end, it doesn’t matter, he could still be in his own private limbo because his totem was USLESS to determine if HE was the one tricking HIMSELF, as he knows how his tests are supposed to turn out- that kind of test would ONLY work in detecting whether or not you were in SOMEONE ELSE’S dream, and thus a totem would be completely useless in your own.
@jts173 your wrong because the totem tells you if its your dream by the feel abd weight and that kind of stuff the..the way to test if its a dream peiord is by spinning it. so in your dream you can be tricked because the totem will feel like it does in real life but even in your dream when you spin it it doesnt stop...its only in someone elses dream that the totem is wrong because they may know what it looks like but they wont know the weight and texture and that sort of stuff
@SatanTrain No, that doesn't make sense- not everyone can 'spin' their totem, as not all totems are tops- that was just Cobb's particular way of testing it to see if it's dimensions were correct, but again, if it's his own subconscious tricking him he would already know it's dimensions AND whether or not it would fall, so, of course, if he's tricking himself it would NOT fall, that's the whole point (becasue the deeper you go, the more convincing the dream is, etc, etc).
Also, here's something else to consider- it wasn't originally his totem. If Mal was correct, and he never left the dream, then he would never have been able to know her totem's real dimensions after she left and left him with it, as he would never have been able to hold it in real life (he only took it as his own in the dream world, and we can assume that he never held it in the 'real' world before 'cause that's the whole point of a totem, that you're not supposed to share it with others).
@jts173 you are thinking too much. if his wife was right all along than why did she die? she died because she went mad. she thought she was dreaming and wanted to wake up. she put her totum locked away so she could stay in the dream world and grow old with cobb. cobb was still going mad because he was dreaming too long. the only thing that kept him sane was his totum. he knew he was awake when the totum wobbled and didnt keep spinning. which just at the end it starts to woble
@AceGuitarR7@AceGuitarR7 Well, the answer to that would be that.. uhm... she didn't die because she was right? She escaped that dream.
Also: "In the end you can hear Cobb's top topple over thus proving that he's not in a dream... Nolan's response: 'This gives Cobb a base-line reality. But he's an untrustworthy narrator.'" (From an i09 article on 'Inception')
...'Untrustworthy' because he (falsely) believes that his totem can tell him anything useful, for the reasons outlined above and more.
There is of course the obvious thing about the totem would not work as an accurate way of gauging weather or not you're asleep if it's YOUR dream, because of course you would already know it's dimensions and so forth.
hmm... nice observation regarding Levitt and Ledger... they were actually co-stars in 10 Things I Hate About You... as for Levitt joining the third Batman film... he could go for a Riddler since Joker belongs to Ledger and boy that would be a very sinister Riddler...
Nolan said that he will definitely not be recasting the Joker. He also said that Inception's ending was not meant to be ambiguous. Some people say that, immediately after the screen cuts to black, they heard a thud meaning the top fell over. I won't know til I go see it again this weekend.
PS. JGL is frickin AWESOME. I really hope this movie jumpstarts a career of major roles for him.
It doesn't really matter if Cobb is still in a dream at the end because he reached the reality that he felt happy in. The whole movie he was trying to get back to his kids, to his reality, wether it's in a dream or not doesn't matter. I personally don't think he's still in a dream.

Closely listen to an Inception dvd made before the January 8th Tucson shooting, especially during the dialogue, "Do It."

“…The movie “Inception” was an inception into the brains of the movie audience that the (main)events in “Inception” were real.”
Remember, YOUR mind -is- the scene of the crime. >.>
