Patrick is known as the apostle of Ireland, Gregory as the apostle of Armenia, Cyril and Methodius as apostles to the Slavs, Bulgarians and maybe a dozen or so other people groups in the Balkans at the time.
Hi Link, You invited questions - so here's one: Are there apostles anymore? I've been trying to pin down the answer in the Bible and am exhausted from trying. Is there any Solid scriptural evidence? What about Paul's statements in 1 Cor 9 and 15? He sure makes it seem like an apostle has to have seen Christ. Can you address this? Thanks much.
I Corinthians 9 lists some of Paul's qualifications for having the right to being supported, being an apostle, having seen the Lord, being free. I don't think we can conclude that an apostle must have seen the Lord just based on this any more than we can conclude that one must be free to be an apostle. Many of the apostles were imprisoned for a while. Would John have actually have been enslaved in a sense on Patmos? II Thess. 1:1 and 2:6-7 seem to indicate that Silas and Timothy were apostles
possibly having become apostles after Paul was one, at least in the case of Timothy. The 12 were called 'apostles' after being sent on an evangelist preaching journey. So were Paul and Barnabas as seen in Acts 13 and Acts 14:4 and 14. I see a usage of 'apostle' to refer to these evangelistic, foundation laying, often church planting itinerant workers in the New Testament. Historically the term has been used for men who bring the Gospel to new peoples or nations.
I think you're probably right about 1 Cor 9:1 but it'll take me a little more time in study to determine exactly why he said he had seen Jesus. If he said it to claim pay rights, that wouldn't make sense b/c we know that's not a prerequisite, so all that leaves us with is that he said it to prove apostleship. On the other hand he may have only been saying it to emphasize that he had no less rights than the 12.
Excellent ......very understandable.
