  • Hi, I see that you picked the grapes when there was snow on the ground. I was wondering how long can grapes stay on the vine. I have grapes this year but haven't had time to pick them or decide what to do with them. Wine kits are expensive so maybe I still have time to make some grape jam or jelly. I'll give it a try but I don't think I have the patience to take the skins of eash grape.

    Thanks for the video and the links.

  • @NewEnglandgardening - I still have my grapes on the vine and intend on picking them and making a batch of jam this week. The grapes have become tremendously strongly flavoured! The longer they are on the vine the sweeter and more condensed and powerful the flavour becomes. That snow was early back in 2009 and didn't stay. We don't have any snow yet here this year. If you want to skip the skinning step, go ahead. It will still work for you if you boil them in their skins. Thks for watching!

  • I'm new to canning....you did not use pectin?

  • @Jackie04061965 - My understanding of the situation is that grapes contain a lot of pectin and so adding more isn't necessary when making grape jam. The jams I've made the past couple of years have been without pectin and they have turned out very "jam-like." By the way, I made a Habanero Jelly a few years back and used pectin and it turned out fantastic! Thanks for watching my video and posting a comment.

  • Hi, I noticed that you did not have the canner jar funnel that allows you to easily fill the jar without spillage on the threads. YOu should be able to find one in a country hardware store. I also noticed that you did not wipe off the threads and top before you put the lid on. I hope that your jars all sealed. The video was excellent and helped us alot in our endeavors. thanks.

  • @304raven - My jars did all seal. They all sealed last year as well, but I will watch that carefully this year. Thanks very much for the suggestion. And for watching my video. Much appreciated.

  • I'm sorry. I was responding to a comment on someone elses video. I mistakely confused this video with theirs.

  • I have grapes at home but it has seeds, does that matter?

  • @bicepsca My grapes seem to have more seeds than grape! The seeds are culled out when you strain the juice. Thanks for watching my video.

  • your video helped us make jam for the first time this evening. we bought a house with a very well established concord grape vine and we wanted to use them. with some calculations we made 6 1/2 quarts of jam. thanks for the video. james

  • hi dude.. your video was very useful as i was searching for a jam recipe, and yours pleased me and my family.. the jam came out very well.. thanks for the recipe...

  • @deepakseshan - Thanks so much for trying it out and leaving a comment. I couldn't be happier.

  • Hey well done! And it does look like the recipe you used is more sophisticated than the one I used. Lemon juice sounds like a good idea.

    "Viscosity": great word!

  • Thanks sgc. Very much appreciated. I also appreciate your letting me respond to your fine video on the same subject. It was my jam-making video inspiration.
