You left out the best part of this song; his intro: "I hope we do your song justice, Glen". A music icon telling a criminal he hopes to do his song justice. Pure class.
Trent Reznor was the one who helped most...when John covered "Hurt" before his death he began to feel all the pain that was locked inside him in that "grey stone chapel," John struggled with many demons in his life, but his religion was by far the worst...still he loved the Jesus that no one knows and though there's no chance for christians in general, John makes me feel like perhaps there's one chapel left for christ to enter...
every time i end up in jail i think of johhnys tunes sometimes sit/lay there pondering with my thoughts sometimes smokeing a joint singing these tunes in my head my world not the world of the screws (prison officers)
@mH8675309 I'm always amazed that someone asks a question like that on a website. Try Wikipedia, he's in there. Sherley's story is also covered in the BRILLIANT graphic novel biography, Johnny Cash: I See A Darkness, by Reinhard Kleist.
@mH8675309 What's amazing is that someone would request that information in a YouTube comment, rather than typing "Glenn Sherley" into a search engine. No surprise that someone would be curious. Big surprise that someone would apparently fail to realize that they could use the very machine that they're sitting at to answer their question.
It may seem like I've been living under a rock. I'm kind of new to country music, and discovered this guy some months ago, but just heard the couple of songs they always stream on an online radio. Now with spotify I was listening to Folsom Prisom album, came here to look for videos of it, and found what I though was one (this one), and on a comment I read: "was a special man". With that I go to Wikipedia and find out he is dead... man I almost cried reading about him and his wife's last months.
JOHNNY WROTE ALOT OF SONGS FROM HIS LIFE EXPERIENCES, LIKE RING OF FIRE, IT WAS ABOUT HOW ATTRACTED HIM & JUNE WAS TO EACH OTHER ALMOST AT THEIR FIRST INTRODUCTION, AND HE`S VERY SINCERE.
The Book of Eli brought me here. There was a quote from this song :) "It's a flower of light in a field of darkness and it's givinn' me the strength to carry on" ;) Nice.
@tdixon11240 I agree with you, Johnny Cash was a special man. His life story is very fascinating too- which is probably why his songs and lyrics are so good.
@tdixon11240 My parents where kids when Cash's songs where new, but even in the year 2011 it's still relevant music. It's timeless, and they are all good sing'alongs.
@tdixon11240 I really dislike country but this man truly was one of those people who rose above genres, anyone who appreciates music cannot over emphasize this mans genius
@joshuabrooks21 he learned this song the night before he performed it and it was written by one of the inmates at folsom who got to watch him do his song
This song is classic. I love it. I just heard this song within the past week and can't stop playing it. I just have to keep repeating it. It's in my iTunes library now.
I love this song, most people think its strange as I'm only 15 years old and I'm a pretty big fan of his, the story behind this song is good too, unfortunate and Glen Shirley though, he couldn't take life out of prison, poor guy
@awesomereece123 I'm 15 too! :D I hate how there's no more class in songs today. They're all about drugs, women, sex, money, or something else that's equally stupid. Some are more legit than others, though, but over all, music is not what it used to be during out parents' time.
RIP Glen Sherley. You have touched more people than you could ever have imagined. Your memory will live for a long time within people who never knew you and lived long after your premature and tragic death. Great song .
As for Jonny Cash you legend, you are loved. you stil inspire me.
i dont know how you can hear a song like this and think "liberal/conservative", the song is about how even if you have committed a sin great enough to be locked up potentially forever, that god still loves you and you can overcome. im not even a christian and i believe this, so stop dividing people into groups and just see them as johnny saw prisoners, human beings with a soul.
A testament to Johnny Cash's musical power and ability to transcend social boundaries: I am extremely anti-religious, but I love all of his songs, this being one of my favorites. Great man, great music.
Johnny Cash has a great number of fans here in Norway, too. I've been a fan for 30 years or more. Had the good fortune to see him live three times, one of those concerts was with the Highwaymen. He is missed, for sure, but his music will just go on and on.
. . . And some of the boldest sinners, of all political persuasions, are those who look most pious. There are plenty who say, "I am gifted because I am blessed." Some rich, handsome, pleasant people are evil. Say rather, "I am blessed because I am forgiven."
@joberstadt Well, not that far back, but liberalism was better at times, depending on the nation. I'm pretty sure he would stay out of politics even today. Conservatism is probably the way he would go (paleoconservatism, Christian conservatism, traditional conservatism, that stuff)
Here in Northern part of Finland,Lapland, Johnny Cash is very well known too.I am 57 now and I have collected Johnny Cash music all my life.
When times are hard I listen Johnny and his songs about us average people.
Hopefully somebody is able to add YouTube Johnny`s song for the memory of Maybelle and Anita Carter "Tears In Holston River".Thank You Johnny Cash.We are missing You here in Arctic Circle.
Very well said my friend :) i'm 16 and from The UK, I cannot remember how i became a fan of such a great musician and a great man, I wish I could have seen him live, unfortunately my age prevented me lol, ah well youtube and his albums will be good enough for me!
@lainio52 We like him some 500 hundred miles south of the Arctic Circle too...at least I do... I live in Vaasa (Finland). Touching story behind this song, since Glen Sherley didn't know Johnny Cash was about to sing the song while visiting Folsom. Tragic thing that Sherley committed suicide later (1978 or so).
the story of Glen Shirley is amazing. if you dont know the story behind this song then its worth checking it out... search for glen shirley on ggl... it makes this song sound even better, if thats possible... Johnny Cash's music saves lives... if you ever have to do time, take his album with you.
thanks man for posting this song it reminds me of my dad who died when i was a kid .been a big fan of johnnys since i can remember ,seen him in concert in birmingham uk around 1970 /71 with my mum and dad
