Watching this reminds me that Venom laid A LOT of the blue prints for what popular metal bands did back in the 90s. Funny how they were mostly ignored by critics.
I always thought Mantas looked like my friend's dad. . .
As for the Black Metal debate: Venom may have coined the term, but the Norwegians took it way off into another direction. . .a much less interesting one if you asked me. Not one of them rocked as much as Venom.
Their whole presentation was a major influence on Black Metal. The names they gave themselves, the extreme Satanic imagery, etc. But it seems Venom were more having fun with the imagery, and most of the later 2nd wave bands were dead serious about it.
I can't work out why people say they were shit at playing. This shit is fast and tight. I just think they were ahead of their time and people didn't know what to make of it.
It's almost ridiculous that they never learned to play in time. Even the newer videos show them struggling to maintain tempo. But whatever. I love 'em.
@666kerryking, yeah, I guess that's why their second album is called "Black Metal," Cronos has referred to their style as "black metal" for nearly 30 years, and a number of black metal bands cite Venom as an influence.
@MikeTheKingScorp1993 Go ahead and ask Fenriz, Nocturno Culto, Necrobutcher, Euronymous (OK, you'll have some problems with that), they'd all tell you Venom is black metal.
If they sound awesome it doesn't matter what they look like. And you kiddies won't know this, but in the early 80s EVERYBODY looked super lame. Then again, that continues to this day. Or are you going to tell me having the crotch of your pants hang down between your knees makes you look really suave and cool?
Musically Venom were years ahead of their time, and that's what matters. One of the most important metal bands of all time, they stood at the cradle of thrash, speed, black and death metal.
I saw em in 84 and in 85 in germany and still love this shit. You should see my daughters face when she s watching videos like this....dad is an weirdo...
I have multiple Orgasms, i was masturbated myself..... when mom arrives to my room... and told me "Can i help you?" and then i say YES PLEASE... Ohhh!! Cronos Is so sexy! lol O:
Venom have set a standard which i love, they wanted straigght forward, undiluted brutal metal. All Hail to venom for sticking to their guns. They are not a band who sell out like emo/ scene kid bands like Bring me the 'hair extensions' (horizon)
That headbanging at 2:26 is the most evilest shit I've ever seen...they dont even have to wear any makeup or facepaint, that is just way too badass and evil, fuck modern black metal...Venom is the only real one....the Kreators!!
Actually Venom isn't really thrash OR black metal. They are one of the main influences of both of those genres though. They are the fusion of heavy metal and hardcore punk. This fusion they created, is what led to thrash, and later black metal.

@sonnygll Sorry about that comment. Last night was...interesting...I was pissed beyond words and it was leaking into everything I was doing. Sincerest apologies
Yes, indeed, I hear quite a lot of Motorhead influence. I would venture a guess that Motorhead was the favorite band of one or more of the guys in Venom, prior to them forming the band.
You can hear influences of different metal and punk bands from the mid to late 70's, but Motorhead is definitely the strongest influence. Same band configuration as Motorhead too.
Yea, I think he came up with that quite early on. What he meant by it, and what other people meant by it are a little different though. Sometimes music can be hard to categorize too. Does it have to have the black metal type vocals to be black metal? Opinions vary.
I would consider bands like Venom, and Celtic Frost, to be more proto-black metal. It still sounded more like a mix of it's influences, rather what is usually classified as black metal post-80's.
@WateverBr You can find it in the satanic symbols, lyrics, raw nihilism of the music, hedonistic additude of the bandmembers, love for leather and tasteless stage apearance. But most of all: IN THE SHEER AWSOMENESS. OBEY!!
Venom. How can you describe them? Angry, Aggresive, Satan esque? How about bad musicianship! I love Venom, they are probabley my favorite band but as musicians, lets face they suck. But they also dont fuck around. Thats what I love about them, they dont let there crappy playing getting in the way of there amzing aura and the fact that they created two metal genres!!!!!!!!!
@IRKMovies yeah, their music was much uncomplicated, but they were a fucking great influence in extreme metal, the same way the sex pistols and the ramones were on punk. we should acknowledge that and ignore what, in my oppinion is pretty obvious and not nice at all
My friend said Dave Mustaine invented thrash which I was big into megadeth and he did play a big role, but I then said "Fuck Dave Cronos invented it!" he was all like "fuck your Greek gods or whatever" and I was all like ".....You call yourself a thrasher.."

then i realised who they look like .
so thats the end of that ,am going to jack off over justin beever, u do the same over venom ,good luck .
@servantlol To me, it seems like the Norwegian scene gets all the credit when many bands are actually less old-school and less innovative than, for example some of the Finnish bands. It's hard to be impressed with Gorgoroth's mid-'90s songs considering songs like Beherit's "Grave Desecration" and Archgoat's "Rise of the Black Moon" came out in 1991 and Bathory's "War" dates back to 1984.
@servantlol As far as proto-black and First Wave goes, my list of the most significant bands would be Bathory circa 1984 (those who think Norwegians invented the sound of BM have not heard "Satan My Master"), Sarcofago, Holocausto, and, later on, Blasphemy. Of my favorite old-school Second Wave bands, e.g. Marduk, Archgoat, War, Beherit, and Horde, none are Norwegian.
@6sixpounder6 Which was really just a mix of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Ironmaiden...sped up and with less ability. They did take it to another level though and it was original for the time.
@phuckinmetal Actually, Venom is Black MEtal, but today's Black Metal is so deformed that it sounds like a bunch of pigs being raped while a freaking lion eats them.
@kancherito33 Actually musically speaking Venom is Thrash Metal. They were a huge influence on and basically spawned the early Black Metal scene, but calling Venom Black Metal is like calling Slayer Death Metal...they had a huge influence on the respective genres, but that doesn't change the fact that musically, they're both Thrash bands.
@phuckinmetal Really? Hmm, interesting, but nonetheless, im not one to aim towards satanic metal, its not my style, kick ass song here. I'd call this Doom Metal, I could play Doom with this bands stuff playing.
@WweThemes120 Agreed. People who say Venom weren't black metal are looking at it through the perspective of today. Back then this was the MOST BRUTAL music imaginable. This was the start of it all: black/death/grindcore/etc........you have to keep perspective. Other bands came along and codified certain genres but Venom did it all first. Chuck Schuldiner agreed.
@SCROGY Totally agreed. That's why I really feel that bands like Venom and Mercyful Fate are more black metal than Mayhem and such because they coined the name to there music and back then this was the sickest shit. If they made the name black metal to define this type of music than this right here is BLACK METAL. Even, Cronos has gone on record saying Venom is black metal and the norwegian bands aren't actually black metal.

To be honest, the term "Thrash Metal" was a good way for the American's to distinguish their sound from the European stuff before.
So I agree with you that earlier bands in Europe shouldn't be labelled thrash.
It's does them a disservice.
Metallica did bring differences. Namely some speed increase and more distortion.
To be honest, If it's metal, I'm interested!!!!
Although I do prefer bands from Europe more so than American bands.

@6sixpounder6 invention of blackmetal
GoddessBloodRose 10 months ago
@6sixpounder6 Which was really just a mix of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Ironmaiden...sped up and with less ability. They did take it to another level though and it was original for the time.

@6sixpounder6 Garage inc was out before this. listen to killing time. thats fucking thrash

@6sixpounder6
I was there. They're even more ridiculous than I remembered. Venom might have started something good but it doesn't change the fact they stunk.
hojer49 9 months ago
venom is way more thrash then black metal
phuckinmetal 10 months ago 39
@phuckinmetal they merely coined the term, similar to how steppenwolf (not a heavy metal band) coined the term "heavy metal".
6sixpounder6 10 months ago
@phuckinmetal Actually, Venom is Black MEtal, but today's Black Metal is so deformed that it sounds like a bunch of pigs being raped while a freaking lion eats them.
kancherito33 9 months ago 5
@kancherito33 Actually musically speaking Venom is Thrash Metal. They were a huge influence on and basically spawned the early Black Metal scene, but calling Venom Black Metal is like calling Slayer Death Metal...they had a huge influence on the respective genres, but that doesn't change the fact that musically, they're both Thrash bands.

@kancherito33 That's called screamo/deathcore/metalcore. Gay genre.

@phuckinmetal werent they part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal?
TheDemarius 8 months ago
@TheDemarius for sure they where...they should be on the big for list
phuckinmetal 8 months ago
@phuckinmetal Really? Hmm, interesting, but nonetheless, im not one to aim towards satanic metal, its not my style, kick ass song here. I'd call this Doom Metal, I could play Doom with this bands stuff playing.
slimv29 8 months ago
@phuckinmetal no they real black metal if venom wasn't created their would be no black metal.
WweThemes120 8 months ago
@WweThemes120 no youre so very wrong...black metal sounds nothing like venom...venom sounds more thrashy
phuckinmetal 7 months ago
@phuckinmetal
black metal doesn't have to be blast beats and shrieking
its all about the EVIL man
dananc1 7 months ago
@phuckinmetal but you gotta understand back then that was black metal lol
WweThemes120 7 months ago
@WweThemes120 Agreed. People who say Venom weren't black metal are looking at it through the perspective of today. Back then this was the MOST BRUTAL music imaginable. This was the start of it all: black/death/grindcore/etc........you have to keep perspective. Other bands came along and codified certain genres but Venom did it all first. Chuck Schuldiner agreed.
SCROGY 5 months ago
@SCROGY Totally agreed. That's why I really feel that bands like Venom and Mercyful Fate are more black metal than Mayhem and such because they coined the name to there music and back then this was the sickest shit. If they made the name black metal to define this type of music than this right here is BLACK METAL. Even, Cronos has gone on record saying Venom is black metal and the norwegian bands aren't actually black metal.
