MST3K did a good job mocking this. I remember Mad Movies on Nick at Nick in '87 and if they voicedub this film. The plot would be about explosion of gas from mexican food :-p God i miss that show (Mad Movies)!!!
It was 1982 when it was on the CBS evening movie. I just saw the opening and the apartment fire scene. Thank goodness I turned to NBC from it. And i was 4 years old.
"What you are about to see could happen to any city, anywhere."
That may have been true in the days of the Great Chicago Fire, but that's hard to believe that it'll be a hot time in the old town tonight in this day and age.
Ha! Nice to see someone loves this stinker like I do! You know you're in trouble when your opening credits sequence showing TEH BIG CITY in all its glory is shot from a car on the street with a handheld camera.
What makes it all the more wonderful is that everyone--from the strains of the opening theme music to Henry Fonda's "all it takes" speech at the end--takes it so seriously in spite of its inherent silliness.
German DVD has no English audio. Spanish DVD has lousy (edited!) transfer.
12/21/2012 we shall see about this.
