does anyone know why he plays the initial bars which look like arpeggios (which he says are like tremolos for orchestra)? any other version and the printed score seems to start directly wth the main them using the C chord. I like Brendel's version though.

alfred brendel made people interested in schubert. its very late that people finally know what a great genius schubert had been besides his songs. but it does not mean that brendel is the one and only schubert interpreter. i wish he could really make an orchestra out of the piano like grigory sokolov is able to.
