It's a great pity that You Tube doesn't have the complete record of this performance made available. It's also a pity that I misspelled saxophone in my previous comment.
Bobby Wellins is one of finest improvisors and saxaphone players in the world. His sound is unique, immediately recognizable and always a joy to experience. Bobby Wellins is, without doubt, a Master of his art. turbanfoil
Cannot believe some of the comments that I have read on this site regarding how jazz is considered. Jazz is universal and enjoyed by all races and creeds. Bobby is a wonderful Sax player and there is no excuse whatsoever for people talking throughout one of his solos. Such people are just totally ignorant and I have no idea why they go to watch a jazz player in the first place.
at the jazz gig a low level p.a. barely cuts though the hum of even a couple of dozen aficionados excited to rap loud about their last, or next night out. i guess jazz was and is still considered nigger music, suitable noise to to find in a brothel and to accompany the low life to the bottom of his glass or the butt of his reefer. i love the way these cats play. colored folk used to dance to this swing. come on gringos, get up and get with it!
hmmm, its odd, or maybe it isnt, the protocols for audiences depending on the genre theyre listening to. a classical gig you cough 3 times and you might be scowled out of the auditorium, sure, a rock gig youre expected to scream yourself horse, but jazz/improv is an awkward case:
Great! Yeah apparently he's playing down here in portsmouth on the 15th of September, I was just checking out Jazz shows and this name popped up, just wondered if it was the same guy on your video.. thanks!
He's definitely one of the best/most popular jazz drummers in the country. He can overplay a little now and again but most of the time he's fantastic. The more I listen to this clip the more I realise just how good they all are.
He was just warming up here. Wish I'd got some more footage of later on in the gig. Along with Stan Tracey and Peter King he is a must see. Always plays with great musicians as well. As regards the audience, it's a fairly new venue and (hopefully) will learn to show a bit more respect for the music.
It does amaze me how much jazz audiences seem to think they can talk as much as they like throughout a gig. Jazz musicians have such a tough time of scraping a meagre living together let alone having to frequently feel as though they're providing background music!
I'm going to see this guy at the 606 on the 31st. Should be sick.

This was at the Brunswick pub in Hove. Bobby plays a lot down South. I think he's moved down here somewhere.

@Steviec63 the drumming sounds fine to me - Spike Wells is an awesome drummer. You should hear the album Dreams Are Free with Pete Jacobsen on piano.

What a horribly noisy audience. Great music though.
