Ben is great. Those of us around D.C. have known about him since he was 12 years old. He's a gifted young guy and Bret is right, he's part of a whole crew of young jazz musicians who will keep this music going well into the 21st Century. God bless them all!!!
@stevezurier We're going to be hearing a lot from Ben and Christian Sands and many others. Look for more features on young musicians coming up here n the JVG channel
Bret, he's one of my favourite bassists. I saw him live with the Jacky Terrasson trio at Yoshi's SF. The crowd including me were laughing as we hadn't heard anyone treat a bass like that before. He is very melodic maybe because he played the piano.
You will luv him on Jacky's album PUSH - his solos on Gaux Girl and My Church are epic.
Personally I always found it hard to appreciate the double bass. Sometimes I feel like I can barely notice it in the background when I'm listening to trio unless I am using quality set of speakers or headphones.
For what it's worth I just bought it on eMusic. I also heard a tenor sax player out here in SF that blew me away. His name is Francis Wong and plays in the Anthony Brown Asian American Orchestra. I saw him in a quartet at a free concert in SF. Incorporated some of the great sounds of the 60's free jazz movement on his horn. Check him out

@BrainFreezeDude Ah, the power of this music!

Your blog seems self-indulgent to me. There is something overly egotistical about your approach. My first impression is, who cares?

We did a gig together playing his music a couple weeks ago in North Carolina. I love Ben!

@BizzMarki Blame it on the MP3, esp. since most are encoded below 192 in the iTunes store.

@Iker888 I'm not serious about that. I intend on going out, the way I came in, imperfections and all.

@JazzVideoGuy I was hoping it was a joke:P

Yeah, Ben grew up with a drummer I play with in Philly - Mike De Castro. Great record!
