The first time i ever heard this song was when i identified with songs. This song was my company for a long time, till I came out of the "Dead Zone". My favourite version is this one. MWAHHHHHH
As a native of western North Carolina, and a man who has met Steve Earle, and has the greatest respect for him, his music, and what he has overcome in his life, and who also thinks Copperhead Road, and The Devil's Right Hand are two of the greatest songs ever, I must say that I prefer the "lads" version of this beautiful song. The accents, the soulful guitar, the mournful steel... Breathtaking. I cherish this version of this song every time I hear it, and I'd bet that Steve does, as well.
@zcbrock keeping the cover close? what?? i bought this album when it first came out when i was a kid after Steve wrote it, the music is the same but i hardly say that these two versions of the song are even similar. I am appalled that these freaks tried to sing Steve Earle. Shame on them!!!! I am saying this stuff in good humour towards you , no hard feelings intended. It's just that we are talking about the man who sang "Copperhead Road"....these dorks had no business doing one of his songs.
Great version of this legendary Steve Earle song. Still prefer the original but applaud the boys for sticking to their Scottish accent and doing it their way.
scotland the brave, god im so proud to be sottish THIS is the best country in the world, besides we're not hated by most of the world unlike another so called power that is !!!!!!!
Must say I'm shocked this has so few views as it's so georgeous. I got married 20 years ago this year and a good friend gave me and my new wife a tape to play in the car from our wedding to honeymoon....turned it on and this was the first track on it. Magic. Love the Proclaimers but tell everyone about this one.
im scottish so like hearin the scots accent instead of like liynhart says about singing in pretend american accents but i still prefer earles version. he owns this yin in ma opinion...he wrote it so maybe thats why he sings it better as its closer to his heart, but anyways...good cover all the same.
I think this is a good cover, but don't see how anyone could think it has no meaning or soul when Steve sings it. There is a beauty in the Proclaimer's harmony... but not much real feeling of blues.
I think I'm going to be sick. They have totally butchered a great song. No way this even begins to compare with the original by the great Steve Earle.
Not bad...though it kinda lacks that actual BLUES feel that Steve Earle has when he sings. From the proclaimers, it's a pretty song. From Earle, it's a moving, ragged, bluesy ballad...from a moving, ragged balladeer.
totally, THEE best version of this song. Along with Sunshine on Leith...quite possibly two of the most beautiful love songs ever performed by these two
Oh man, maybe I'm partial cuz I heard it from the Proclaimers first, but this is loads better than Steve Earle, even if he was the first to sing it :S
Beautiful! I bought their CD because of 500 miles. Found this song, loved it, saw that Steve Earle wrote it. Bought Guitar Town, what? Classic album! But I was already somewhat a SE fan, with limited exposure in TX ironically his home state. Proclaimers!
these boys are so under-rated. Beautiful tone in their voices and good on them for having the balls to sing in their own accents instead of the usual american crap twang. thanks for the music!

I dont think its about whos version is better or not. These guys obviously had a lot of respect for the original to keep this cover so close.

Great song. Personification to the fullest. I love it, even with it's southern twang.

I find this version thoughtful and touching. It really speaks of their devotion to their music, I think it is beautiful.

I agree , the proclaiers have given this song a soul ! this means something now and different people can relate to it and thats what good music is !

no offence to these guys, i love their work, but this is Steve Earle's song, and although its a good cover, its not as good in my opinion.
