I admit he's always at the forefront of racial controversies but he's so powerless. What has he done?

Oh there are tons of examples. Right now, check out what's going on in regard to the incident where the NYPD shot an African American man on his wedding day by pumping 50 bullets into his car... Totally unarme, totally without provocation. Nobody would have heard about that incident had Sharpton not gone in and worked for the victim's families. The Mayor has met with him and there are now ongoing negociations and investigations- and it's gotten national press.
