I used to imagine making love to my girlfriend whenever I listen to this song. And you're telling me she was inspired by someone who was stalking her?? WHOA.
I heard this song in a store, but couldn't hear it. So, I came home and looked it up. Then I begin to read all this weird stalker shit?! I thought this was a beautiful love song.....weird?!?
Haha! Me, too! I heard this song in Bed, Bath, and Beyond and was haunted by it. When I got home and looked it up...Creepsville. Now I don't know what to think.
While it is undoubtedly a beautiful song, it is not a love song, not in the healthy sense of the word love. It is about domination and owning someone and the lyrics are very sinister. Thematically, it's very reminiscent of "Every Breath You Take" by the Police.
hate it 4 him. I hve been in love with vikki for 30 yys. I thought of her EVERY day. Not all thoughts were gud. Some were of the hangman. this song brings her smell back to me along with her beauty. woohoo!
This has always been one of my favorite songs to sing and I somehow always thought a lot of it was about her love for someone. I can't quite believe this is the 1st time I thought to look at the music video. Before seeing the story behind it, it seemed like a bizarre/interesting video that I somewhat understood. The story though is so necessary to gain full understanding. It's interesting because I had a stalker that would send me letters, books and visit me. I filed a restraining order also.
I think it's a great video if you're into DVDA.............what?................you know Denying Violence and Detrimental Attacks. LOL. Seriously, I was inspired to write that after reading another persons post...............but really even if you don't like the video or the song you have to admit Sarah McLachlan has an absolutely unique and beautiful voice with actual talent. The fact that she doesn't have to use sexuality to sell music is a testimony to her musicianship.
On storytellers she said it was from the named stalker (in conjunction with other stalker letter she received over the years) She wasn't attracted/interested in the stalker himself but was allured by someones dedication to a person whom she never meet and her trying to understand it. Its been reported over the years only several of her lyrics are from his letter. Could quite possibly be the meaning description was made to make the song more mysterious.
I used to like this song until I saw this incredibly lame video. Some naked guy glued to her fully clad body with his face stuck to her collar bone while she uncomfortably touches him in a forced, stupid fashion. Then I read the comment about how she stole the lyrics from a stalker who she took out a restraining order on There is something sick about that as well. I hope that is all just false rumor.
@belchtopturtledown You need to look past surface value if you're going to enjoy good music. She didn't steal anything, and that is not what the comment said; he said she used the letters her stalker sent her as a basis; if you look up the letters (they have been made public domain), you will notice that is the greatest extent of her "thievery." The letters inspired the song, nothing more. Look it up on Wikipedia, that might help you understand this more
@quackinacan It was that she wanted to use the material from a stalker that bothered me more, although stealing is not nice. I still like the song. I don't like the video at all. It should be redone with a cool solid gray cat and a baby in a crib and it should lend itself to the folk lore of cats stealing baby's breath. The kitty licks the baby and then...oh no!...but of course the baby is fine...just meows a little.
@belchtopturtledown I think it was like an empowering thing to use these letters that probably scared the sh*t outta her and then she was like: 'hell to the no!' and used them to show stalker man that she could make something beautiful out of it and that she won't stand to be tormented by him.
"How cold the the wind was, blowing down from the Great Divide"- A line from the book The Thorn Birds. Just read that line and made me think of this song instantly.
This song reminds me of a friend who was murdered 17 years ago when I was in highschool. It should have been me, he was a much better person then me...
Reading the comments this brings forth a good life lesson. If you want to show someone you are interested in getting to know them better/dating them, don't send them letters talking about how badly you wanna kiss/touch/fuck them. It's creepy, plain and simple.
So I am seeing all these comments about stalkers...but I am only here because this song was mentioned in an article on cracked.com called "8 Romantic Songs You Didn't Know Were About Rape"....
I am watching this right now because a man who has been stalking me for over a decade came into my work last night. I am quitting my job, and I need strength.
@dreamclocks Idiot. Just because you see some skin and you are incapable of comprehending the meaning of the music, you just go right to assuming that it's porn. I guess I was mistaken to think that Australians were more enlightened than that.
@sweiland75 think about this. "And I would be the one To hold you down Kiss you so hard I’ll take your breath away And after I’d wipe away the tears Just close your eyes dear" Also cracked.com/article_18431_8-romantic-songs-you-didnt-know-were-about-rape_p2.html
This whole album is haunting and beautiful. I don't often listen to it, it hurts me. This song "Possession" reminds me of my daughter Caitlin, who was born stillborn at 40 weeks in 1998. Tragic story of loss and unraveling of myself and my husband (ex husband). The entire CD was played over and over as I grieved for her and the piano is so beautiful, as is Sarah. Lesley
McLachlan wrote the song after having being stalked by Uwe Vandrei, an obssessed fan from Ottawa for three years. She eventually took out a restraining order against him and wrote Possession shortly thereafter, using his letters as the basis of much of the lyrics. Incredibly Vandrei filed a lawsuit against her claiming "breach of confidence" and laid claim to a share of the songwriting credits. The case never made trial as Vandrei committed suicide in December 1994.
@01skulldragon13 ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!! You know how many times I've listened to that song imaging make love to my gf using that as my soundtrack?! GEEZ TALK ABOUT BIZZARE!!
@sackgrinder Actually, it does, because those biblical passages are about how male and female relations were interpreted by an earlier world. The woman was seen as a "temptress" and a "seductress". The fan had his own personal desire for Sarah, disillusioned by his own mind without really knowing who she was. It's a kind of self-seduction that people fall into all the time and people create scapegoats for their personal issues- in this case, women.
In 1994, McLachlan was sued by Uwe Vandrei, an obsessed fan from Ottawa, Ontario, who alleged that his love letters to her had been the basis of "Possession". ..
In an interview in Rolling Stone three years later, McLachlan added, "And this one person wasn't the only guy ... there were a lot of letters from other people saying the same kind of thing ... Writing "Possession" was very therapeutic for me."
I wonder who the historical figure is at 3:06 and 3:19, though I'm guessing the former's Messalina, known for her cruelty and her...insatiable sexual appetites.
I've never heard this song before but after reading it's origin I had to check it out and it's probably very pretty and all but I just can't get past the creepy stalk factor :S
What I like is the concept of taking something threatening and making ART out of it...taking back your power and creating...Sarah overcame whatever she thought of being stalked and turned it around into THIS! BRAVA
LMAO, did you actually know she wrote this song about when she was being stalked and this is some of the stuff in the letters the crazy wrote to her. So being held down and kiss so hard until she can't breath.... And how he won't be denied.
What I look for good music, I look for three things:
1/Melody
2/Thought-out lyrics
3/Atmosphere
More than anything else, this song embodies ATMOSPHERE. It's creepy, moreso than anything else she's ever written, including "Witness" from "SURFACING". It's awesome that, in this day and age, one can still find low-key pop songs that retain that yearning atmosphere, which-sadly-today's pop does not have.
@irenaprude2010 are you kidding? this version was directed by sarah herself but it was banned in the united states for some reason......they had to dumb it down for the mindless mass!! smart move....prob made sarah a lot of money!! god forbid anyone use their brains....
@sweiland75 Not stalking, the video. Americans have this thing about naked people appearing on public television. Or at least they did at the time this video was made.
When this song first came out, I assumed it was about desire/love; then at some point, I heard that the song was written from the perspective of Sarah's stalker based on letters he sent her. Either way, it's a great song. Full of passion and meaning.
Her voice is of a Goddess!! This is all a police negotiator needs to blast through a megaphone to prevent a bloodbath! This song just pierces through my concrete heart and shows that somewhere, in here lies something lol.
This is a different version of the music video than what I've seen, I mean the one where she's on the stage with the guitar. I like this one better. Does anyone know which director worked on this?
I was stalked by men I did NOT know and men I DID know ....both are very creepy....I was younger then and I think I would now know better and pick up on 'the vibe" The worst was a past lover....I pray I never set eyes on him again...it's very creepy to walk out on your own street to catch a bus to work and see the pr**# standing right there - you know who you are .....
@manco82 Just saw her this thursday; I didn't tape it though. The whole band was super tight and her voice was perfection. I can't really think of any weak point in the entire show.
I tend to get rather frazzled when I can't understand/come up with a concept that fits the acting in a music video, but it seems to be this: the Creator (symbol being women) has incarnated amongst humanity because it lives through it's creation (symbol being men); the Creator lives through, holds passion for, and holds reverence for the Cycle of Life; it is in it, amongst us. The Creator is in as much love with us (if not more) than some of us are with It.
I remember this song playing when I had the apt manager (Susan) come over for a drink June 97. Well I got carted off to the hospital because I drank a bottle of scotch and followed it with 50mg of Valium. Seems I wanted to mellow out before she showed up. Willow Glen apt Ft.Worth Tx.
say what !!some guy sued her to get to know her ,then failed so killed himself-then she wrote a song about it !!do i have my ducks straight on this?? chuck

@harasnosilla1 No, I think their problem with it was that it was too sexy for some people at the time.
schapman711 10 months ago
@schapman711 What do Americans think is sexy about stalking?
sweiland75 4 months ago
@sweiland75 Not stalking, the video. Americans have this thing about naked people appearing on public television.

My dad says this is about a stalker. Creepy, but I like the song anyway. Does that make me weird?

This is a different version of the music video than what I've seen, I mean the one where she's on the stage with the guitar. I like this one better. Does anyone know which director worked on this?
Noromongrel 1 year ago
@Noromongrel Sarah McLachlan herself directed this according to wiki

@seraph58 Thanks, she did a good job with this in my opinion, more interesting than the other version.

This is when Sarah was edgy and relevant. Too bad she became such a middle-of-the-road artist.

@bboooobbyy Really any recent evidence?
manco82 11 months ago

Or something like that. :B

I remember this song playing when I had the apt manager (Susan) come over for a drink June 97. Well I got carted off to the hospital because I drank a bottle of scotch and followed it with 50mg of Valium. Seems I wanted to mellow out before she showed up. Willow Glen apt Ft.Worth Tx.

why is everyone hating on the video. I think it is haunting and disturbing. And more than a little reminiscent of REM's "Losing My Religion" clip
