hey i have a quick question. Were building a lawnmower and we have it baiscly built but were trying to figure out where the balls on the shifting mechanism go. do they shift to where their sposed to be? or what please answer
Thanks- I hve to repair a different type but this gives me the general knowledge I need to tackle the repair. Great video (thanks for the time lapse, shows the process without dragging it out)
I watched your video, and tore into a 6 spd that I have. It would not shift at all, so I used your guidance & got it open. The gears all look nice but the shaft that the selector slides along was totally rusted & gunked up.
So I installed another 6 speed that I have and it has 6 forwards & no reverse. Is there an adjustment inside the case to get it to find the 8th spot for reverse?
does the transaxel work as a clutch also so i can just put a pulley on a verticle shaft and hook it up to a transaxle without any clutch or anything else.
yes but what years a make of the lawn tractors will have this kind of transaxles in them ?Also can you use 90w rear end oil for cars & trucks after you clean it out ? thanks
i got a 7 speed i changed the pullys around (made my own) and thing was going wicked fast till the belt exploded now i hear a grinding noise in the tranny is it possible i fucked the gears or somthing inside it buy it going to fast or could it be somthing else?
Hello i am making a gokart out of my cub cadet. I have a side drive briggs and need to find an axel. Could i take apart a hydro static diff to make an axel???
i might know whats wrong with the gears, there is a little notch on the end caps that are on the gears that touch the case and they have to be on the side or the trany will be tight and wont move
i need help with my tranny i took it apart to put another axle in it and when i tighted everything i put it in revrse and the pulley felt tight then i put it in 6th and i couldnt even move the pulley i need help with it badly
it makes you feel that its in gear when you move the shifter i had mine apart today.....and lost the ball lol no big deal i just have to pay attention when i put it in gear now
Look for a really good hardware store on industrial supply store near you. Tractor Supply Company stores have a good assortment of universal pulleys too.

yeah, i actually ended up doing that. I found that my clutch keys were just bent... I did put new ones in, but then it was too hard to shift - almost bent the shifter as I wrenched on it. Oh well, I can always just rebuild it again.
@jeffhamula Did you try loosening up that Allen bolt that holds the shift detent ball and spring down? You'd be surprised how hard it can make the shifter move if you overtighten it.
I really like your videos - they gave me confidence to buy a 11hp Craftsman this week as a project - with a plow & 38" deck w/ bagger. With some TLC runs great. It goes in to forward and back but not all the gears on the 5 speed. I open the Foote transaxle, and it seemed to be in great shape - not beat or worn. from playing around with it open, the shifter things in the axle dont grab well on the gears inside for gear 2-5. Which parts should I order to refurb this POS? is searsdirect ok?
Nice video, but shame on you. You should have cleaned all the old grease out. With the gears wore the way they where you have contaminated grease thats just going to lead to another transmission failure down the road
Yeah, i was too impatient to wait a day for grease. If this was for anything other than a junky rust-bucket tractor, I would have put in fresh Bentonite grease, as I do when I repair other peoples transaxles. I haven't had any problems with this one, but I would certainly recommend not half-assing it like I did.
I did it for myself, if I would have done it for a customer I would have put new grease in and charged $50 labor plus whatever the overpriced grease costs.
Excellent shot of the internals--i've never seen one before. I thought it would have ATF insdie--grease is OK for gear teeth, but the side journals in the case--not so hot. That cheesey bevel input gear--no wonder that went bad--that looks too chinsey.

Hope it works after I put it back together. I had nothing to lose, it was slipping gears bad.
My 6 speed tranny gear shifter stuck and won't go into any gear. After watch this clip I took it apart , cleaned the gear shifter and shaft. new grease and it works great now,
This video has great details and simple

I want to learn how to rebulid hydrostatic tranny. Can you shoot that clip?
Yeah that shifter sticking is a common thing. I havn't had a hydro die on me yet, so I never needed to open one up. But I have one now that might be dead, so who knows!
i didnt know the tires where driven by belt untill i was driving it and it wouldnt move anymore then saw the belt fell off i was like great my dads gonna be peed untill i seen the belt had fallen off.
That's a snap-ring pliers, It's worth the $5. You could try grinding down the tips of a needle-nose pliers, that works OK. Or you can use small flat-head screw drivers and pop it off, but that way is a BITCH.
I just tore my Dana/Foote transaxle out of my 92 LT4000, took about a cup and a half of grease out of it, and put in a quart of 80 wt gear oil, seems to be running alot better now... Still need to weld the spider gears though. Seems to shift better with gear oil in it too. I use this tractor for yard/trail riding and am looking for a 4" rear pulley for it...
lol.. Hey, im a poor bastard, and a redneck, but at least I dont live in a trailer. I dont have the money for a quad, even a used one, im only 17... But, its cheap fun...
Hey nice video. I have an identical transaxle (6 speed version) and it almost always sticks in first gear and I have to hit the shifter pretty hard to get out of first, any ideas on what would cause that and would it be fixable?
I would guess that you've got some rust inside on the shifter dentent ball (that's that ball and spring you see me putting back in, maybe in part 2) I would take it apart and clean and re grease the whole thing.
Well, if you hate Tecumseh in general, then steer clear of the Peerless trannys (that's the Tecumseh one) and get a Spicer/Dana or Foote. Now that the Tecumseh company is gone, they sold the Peerless trans division to Husqvarna, FYI.
when u were taking the snapring off was there a bolt on too?
just wondering because i need to put a smaller pulley on the transaxle so i can go fast and a bigger pulley on the front also i cant get the pulley off...is it because of that snapring
I guess it was the camera's mic, it picks up everything and overamplifys it. We were about 50ft from the road. It's supossed to be 30mph, but most cars do 50!!
Rebuild these all the time...Pack grease where transaxles sit and then where all the gears are put 80/90 gear oil 3/4 the way up to the case and put permtex around the case
If I could have bought new Bentonite grease somewhere local, I would have. It looked fine so I just left it. If it were anything besides this junky WeedEater, I would have ordered fresh stuff.
hey lynol i was using a lawn sweeper to day and i think my trans took a shit. it wont move in any gear and when i try to push it the pulley moves, do you think i need to tear it apart?
Well, if it didn't make a loud noise it might not be catastrophic, lol! Better open it up and look at all the gears. Something might have come out of place.
well the reason it stopped moving was the belt tensionor spring came off and so the belt came off but was holding the belt up so i couldnt see. but im still gonna tear it apart because its starting to whine and lightly buck.
If you guys were to put a small pulley on instead of the original, what size would you put on, how would you know what size belt you would have to get to make it work well, and finally, would you be able to still cut grass or would the mower go too fast or just not cut? Thanks for the GREAT video!!
If you put a real small pulley on the trans, it'll be fast, but you'll loose power at the rear end. but since the cutting deck is run off the motor, as long as you don't change the motor's pulley, your deck will have the same power. So if you want to make your lawn tractor go a little faster, put a slightly smaller pulley on the trans. That way you'll have a small speed increase without loosing to much pulling power or making the tractor go so fast that even in 1st gear it can't cut the grass.
Oh and for the belts, just measure the size you need and buy it at an industrial supply company where they have lots of different belts, or buy it online.
hey this is josh, i have a question. my riding mower just wont stay charged. it has a new battery and all the wiring except the headlights are connected. what could it be?
Your stator (alternator type thing) could be bad. Try disconnecting the battery after you start it up and use a voltage tester to see if your getting 12v or so out of the positive wire that went to your battery. If your not showing enough volts, then check the volts at the wire that comes off the stator.
This is very cool, I have never heard of somebody taking a 5 speed and converting it to a 6 speed. But like you say, these things are so close in design that you can do that. I guess it would not be that hard to repair a gear transmition as I am seeing proof of that right now. However, I doubt you could just dive into a hydrostatic tranny in the same way.
It looks just like the one out of my 85 craftsman- i broke a few teeth off the pinion gears and locked er up. The only issue with going to 6 speeds is- the shifter 'gate' on the chassis will need to be opened up some. Im surprised y didnt clean all the old grease out and put new stuff in. I used mostly never seize, high temp wheel bering grease and 90 wt gear oil when i refilled the weedeaters trans.
I would have liked to put grease in, but I wanted it done that day. I would certainly recommend that in a case where teeth have snapped off gears, and for a tractor you use regularly. As far as the shifter gate, I've found that most tractors are made to accommodate a 6th gear position, as was the case for this Weed Eater.
Ah- on my craftsman- even tho the trans was almost identical it still doesnt quite line up- i dont have acess to the other gear. Im planning on ditching the trans for a straight axle and go kart clutch anyway 'someday' in the next round of mods.

Cool video, thanks for sharing :)

Cool video.

I have a 5speed in my modified'84 craftsman. I find that that black muck likes to squeeze out between the two parts of the case.
