In the beginning of war, British and America were actually on the side of Japan. But after the attack on Shanghai, their financial interest were affected and eventually lead to trade embargo on Japan that lead to her destruction. It is the German adviser who advised the Chinese that war should wage on Shanghai and not in the north border, so that the world could see the aggression of Japan and went against her. It was a trap which Japan jumped into it so eagerly and not realized till today!

There are always some bigger reasons, and "incidents" are always just a pretext (they blow up a pile of explosives, but they are not a reason that this pile of explosives have been gathered in the first place). This was indeed a drastic concession, which Japan had ever conceded.

On July 7, 1937 based on the protocol, the Japanese Army was having field practice at night near Marco Polo Bridge. Suddenly, several shots were fired against the Japanese troops from the directions where the Chinese troops were staying. This caused a major conflict between Japan and China. This was the start of the unfortunate incident, called the 'Marco Polo Bridge Incident'
