I've got the exact same model!! And it works with no problems, built to last. I don't think it was for any one computer, probably for any that supported regualar tape recorders. Man, you could even use a reel-to-reel with an old computer like that! This recorder, sorry to say, is DC bias.
Oh man, yeah I remember getting Compute! magazine and spending hours typing in the programs into our Vic-20 and then saving it on a similiar tape recorder. I think ours had the Commodore logo it. They were SOO SLOW!! It took something like 20 minutes to load Forbidden Forest. Finally got the 1541 drive for by 16th birthday and that was luxury by comparison! Pretty sure I still have some old cassettes with those screeching Vic-20 programs on them. PRESS PLAY ON TAPE. LOL
It does kinda of look like Trash 80, but it seems like Radio Shack would have rebranded the recorder with the Tandy brand like they were famous for doing with other products.
Maybe it is for the TI-99 4A like putergk said?
It would be a fun project to make new cassettes of those old programs!
I imagine that the POKE, PEEK and SYS command addresses, etc would be unique to the Vic-20 hardware, and also the character set would be incompatible with a PET... Do you have one of those too?
I had a PET years ago but stripped it when I was a dumb kid. I really wish I still had it. I think I stripped it because the keyboard was trashed... I could have fixed it now.
I used a cassette recorder with my first Apple II in 1978. I can not remember the manufacture of the recorder. It was a very slow upload and I bought a floppy drive ASAP.
Whats the capacity for a tape: I mind how many megas?

@Abrahandsome3200 It probably varies between formats, but I'd say it's less than a megabyte in most cases.

I used one of these in a TRS-80.

Do you think you could do some videos of presentations of you recorders (like the Rhapsody) of recording quality and playback? That would be great!

Still sounded pretty good in your demo for DC bias. I suppose the clarity had to be of certain standards to record computer data though.
I'm still wondering if I could make new tapes from audio files and use them on my old Commodore...

Now that I think about it, the color scheme leads me to believe this was from a TRS-80.
I wonder if there is somewhere I can download .WAV files of cassette based programs and use this on my VIC-20.
Will a VIC-20 run programs from a PET? I might have a couple tapes somewhere.

Err, you said run PET programs on the VIC-20... no idea there...

@Maxxarcade I do know for C64 programs they have a file format .tap, one person showed how you can put them on a tape.

I had a recorder just like that. It was beige in color. Same controls and placement etc. It was for my Texas Instruments TI-994A.
