This car is the 1st hybrid to win an endurance event, but it's not the 1st hybrid to be entered in one. Back in 1998 Panoz went to LeMans with a hybrid of their GT1 car. However, the car did not start the race due to several complications the small team could not overcome. With Toyota's resources it can produce a good EV as seen here. Only problem is LeMans (which Toyota want to win at) rules will not recognize hybrids or EV's in their scoring so a win would not be credited. But a EV is in ALMS.

I think you'll find the non scoring was for 2009 only, but no hybrids were entered.

The only hybrid that was ready to run in 2009 as 00 car was Peugeot, but running a F1 style KERS system which doesn't fit the ATO hybrid rules that require regen be collected from both front and rear axles.

Good job Toyota on creating a first in Hybrid racecar. There's no reason why motorsports can't be a cleaner process. Does it get good MPG???

actually, what you heard at the start was the whine of the gearbox. electric motors are relatively silent
