i've tried to figure out DG's tone for a while. I really think that it comes from his Hiwatt being cranked. To handle such a touch sensitive amp at high volume must be difficult.
all that gadget shit is a bit much for me, i just like to keep it simple, like plug straight in the amp and play. got to admit though your rig sounds really good and your playin is tops aswell. Nice!!
Never mind the critics, kid...you've got the essence. Have fun and don't worry about the other guy. DLS Roto-Sim, good choice. That's the best Les sim on the planet that isn't actually moving air.
Where is the vibrato bar? Or didn`t your $4000 guitar come with one? You should have saved your money and done your own thing. Thanks for showing off your expensive equipment though.
Gilmour used to imitate Hendrix back in the days!! you make me realise how much time i have without listening to some Pink Floyd record and you played well
This guy has some nice equipment..yes hes a beginner...but at least hes jammin. betcha he will blow youre mind in a couple years. One thing is certain, when you have nice gear..you want to play more, and the more you play, the better you play, It's a never ending cycle..even for the greats. Dude I think you sound great, and you will only get better..keep jammin
Man, you wasted so much money in a gear that already exists, this tone is note yours, you can't even play a bend in the right tone... Try to make your own identity with ytour sound. Copying is not creative. And, before buying such a gear, work your guitar, man.
I like that it is not perfect but you are having fun with it. Would rather see this than a robot copier. I chase all of my favorite guitarist tones just like they did before me. Not one great guitarist on the planet goes on YouTube and trashes other people playing. Being great is more than just playing..it's when people can feel the passion in your notes. Satriani is passionate about playing clean and Hendrix was passionate about playing salty. Both great IMHO.
sorry just don't get it why spend all that money if you obviously lack the skills to play it. Doesn't even sound close bro sorry to say. You can spend all the money in the world but it means nothing. Sell that shit and get yourself a bargain basement strat and develop your ear - you're obviously tone deaf if you can't hear how far out of key you are bending those notes.
@dmart1000 Do you think that he thinks he can play as good as Gilmour just because he bought that gear. Sounds like your deaf and stating the obvious.
Sure you'll never have THE gilmour tone, but what the fuck? All right, it's better to create his own sound but you hurt no one by searching the gilmour sound. Great gear man ;)
Also, nothing wrong with having nice gear, or toying with another guitarist's sound. I'm just saying that this video is proof that thousands of dollars of top-notch equipment can't hide amateur playing.
Not bad man...for the haters who can actually play, show some respect to another fellow musician. For the rest of them, take up the instrument first before offering your opinions
A guitar is much Like a woman. You have to hold her in your arms. You have to love her. If she feels right, then she's the one for you. You have to show her lots if attention and take great care of her.. If she becomes warped or twisted, you can remove her neck...
Guys please stop saying that he has to create his own tone. Obviously this guy (just like myself) loves Gilmour en Pink Floyd. What is wrong with trying to sound alike? We're not playing original material here. We didn't write these songs. We are trying to COPY them and trying to get as close as possible to the originals.
If you write your own songs it's a completely different story. But then again if I play a solo in one of my own compositions I'd like it to have that Gilmour sound too.
When all's said and done, david gilmour is a blues head and plays beautifully, but I tend to agree with Pacrat90 who advocates that we should seek our own tone. Carlos Santana and dG both used early muffs to get their tone and although gear has come and gone, that fat round sustaining tone is still what we remember when thinking of these seminal axe grinders! Great vids.
ignore the haters bro...what they are trying to say is "Holy crap you are awesome for having that beautiful guitar!!!" they just cant express themselves right
@DarthBond11 His bends are very very good, you can never get as accurate as the original recording, and you probably wouldn't have noticed any inaccuracies had he not been playing with a backing track
@lukitzar accurate as the original? dude, a bend is a bend, you have to reach certain note, he doesnt do that, he doesnt get there or either bends too much. his bends are not good. live with it
@DarthBond11 Ur half-right there, I have been having trouble with my hearing lately, but I guess that my computer is near enough for me to hear what the guy was playing. Other than that, I've been playing for more than five years, otherwise I probably wouldn't be interested in watching this video. I just love youtube fights :D
But I suggest you first dive a little bit deeper in what are David Gilmour's signature licks, instead of spending dollars just to get his sound! I don't need to replicate someone's sound with someone's gear to sound-a-like, know what I mean?
@zepha17 He is just playing like Gilmour, who got most of his emotion from the same place he got "his" music from... ROGER WATERS... the heart, soul and creative force behind Pink Floyd who wrote the vast majority of music, created ALL of the concepts for the albums, created the stage shows, and created the movie. Waters, the genius, made Gilmour. Where was Gilmour before Waters? He was a nobody. Where was he after Waters? He was having his girlfriend write "his" lousy music.
@MongoLloydd come on man, don't be ridiculous. All the guitar solos are Gilmour's work, and the Comfortably Numb solo derived from his first solo album. Fat Old sun is Gilmour's work. And DSM was created by all 4, it was the climax of their teamwork. You clearly see it in how it has much of Waters society criticism but still a happy smooth tone. While the Wall is almost entirely Waters work, it has a much darker tone and an overwhelmingly sad opinion of the world.
Although you may have $8k in great gear there are a few things to note;
1. Your tone although nice, was a bit off.
2. Your playing was not worth all the pre-play hype, although it wasn't horrible.

Rick - I thought your TONE was spot-on! That is very impressive to have replicated Gilmour's rig with non-boutique Pedals. I, too, replicate Artists' rigs and get tremendous joy out of nailing Warren's and Duane Allman's TONE!
No matter how much people try to copy the gear, they will never sound like Gilmour, nor will they ever sound like any other guitarist. Unless you cut their hands of then sew them onto your arms, and take out there brain and implant it into your head, You'll never sound like your favourite guitarists, stop chasing tone. Create your own tone.
@pacrat90 i agree although it is human nature to aspire to be like those who are greater. i mean originality is key but if people want to be like those who are original i say go ahead. not everyone can/should have their own tone cause then we wouldnt have what we call "rockstars" instead we would have "everybody's" :) just my opinion no diss or anything
@pacrat90 but when you are very close to your idol, you can start getting an own way, and when you old and grey (lol), you have a tone, that makes you think of that person, buti s very original,
@pacrat90 I agree that you pretty much never achieve a perfect recreation, but sometimes it is worth chasing. It can help you learn something along the way and maybe you find your own sound along your path.
Sorry, but i don't see anything wrong in chasing your favourite guitarist's tone.
The fact that he's able to achieve a tone similar to gilmour's doesn't mean that's the only thing he can do with the instrument. I agree that he will never play/sound/compose like david but if trying to play his songs using similar pieces of gear is fun for him... why not do it? In fact, the video is useful in showing how such gear sounds on mortal hands :)
You should watch live at Pompeii, and pay very close attention to what David and the rest of Floyd say about being slaves of thier equipment. I think you gotta find the music in your mind before you find it in the equipment.
I'm totally not a hater...good tone, however, if I may put in a critique..watch the intonation in your bends and vibrato. That's really the key to sounding like him. he's a jedi master at bends and vibrato. So, keep up the good work! Enjoy yourself.
I have a DG setup but the differences are I opted for the 52 twin reissue and the JH Fuzz Face. I have a Big Muff and 2 Rats (Ratt 2 and 85 reissue) but I always fall back on the Fuzz Face for some reason. The one thing I suggest you try is replacing the boss with a Demeter Compulator. It makes a difference.
Great guitar. In fact, you've got fantastic gear. You NEED to work on your technique. Like BAD.
All those left handed vibratos are taking away from your fretting, and you're skipping a lot of notes. It's subtle, but once you play the real thing, you'll FEEL the difference as well as hear it.
You should learn to use the tremolo arm that came with your Strat. If you want to play like David, your technique must match his, and he loves his tremolo.
@helpdonate1 Totally agree on that. There's nothing wrong with emulating your hero imho, we all do that when we start to some extent, but at some point along the way ya gotta break free from that and find your own sound. I think this guy will get there, looks like he was just starting out and had money to burn. He'll likely find his own groove as time goes on.
nice try...watch your vibrato because sometimes it is too intense and it seems like you are out of tune...! And watch your bends too , they seem to lack definition of the actual note...! ***
Don't listen to those people who say that you can't play. You're a good guitar player.
You probably forgot something for your gear. I was doing some research and I found out that David Gilmour uses Fender 354 picks (teardrops) Ever since I started using them I'm able to control my picking a lot better when it comes to playing Time. Hope this has helped.
OVERKILLLLLL.............. You know that you're not actually Daivd Gilmour, right? I mean, this is nice gear and all, but seriously, you're just not David Gilmour : )
@USAF300 Gee USAF300 thanks for clearing that issue up for all of us. We all thought we were all watching Gilmour playing guitar for your sorry ass in his family room.... The owner of this video never claimed to play a good guitar. He is just sharing his passion with us. And you who is jealous of this guy's gear have no video of your own show for. Go back to playing with your paper airplanes kid.
Its a favourite DG solo . beautifuly played and great to hear a younger player finding inspiration from a "slower" player. Looks a beautiful strat , hope it brings many years of happiness
So wait... you ummm... spent $5,000 on your guitar alone? For lord's sake tell me you make money playing that thing. Cause the Hiwatt AND the WEM cab is more expensive than what may be necessary to get the tone you're looking for.
your backing track is pitched, you need to tune your strings a little bit higher than normal, thats why it sounds like your bends are off, try that, guarantee it will sound better, i had the same problem...
@StreeTRacR008 Oh yeh you're right my bad, I disagree though Strats are far easier to bend than Tele's due to the action and floating bridge. But I think this guy would be better off with either lighter strings or to play the start of it higher up the fretboard.
@speedfreak808 : Either way, his bending needs improvement. It's off key and I'm afraid that's more a matter of good ears than technique only. The Gilmour sound is there alright... my compliments!
0:41 - are those David Gilmour inspired Wii remotes? They should be black. LOL.
Nice job on the video. Way to be committed!

i dont think this dude tries to sound exactly like gilmour
but its sounds pretty much simillar
a guitarist's sound is made by a lot of things not only by gear but playing stlye also
even if the guitarist picking rough or softly the string changes the sound
thats why no body can ever copy gilmour's sound
by the way ther a web site cold gilmourish if you are gilmour fan check it out

how did you get a WEM cabinet

Didn't realize how useless fantastic gear is in certain hands until now. I'll take practice, good fingers and mediocre gear over this any day.
chuckthemagicnorris 1 year ago
all that gear and u couldnt even make a smooth transition from lead to rhythm? ????

You should watch live at Pompeii, and pay very close attention to what David and the rest of Floyd say about being slaves of thier equipment. I think you gotta find the music in your mind before you find it in the equipment.

loads of haters on this post. nice gear bro. sounds good
xxfaction6xx 1 year ago 23
I'm totally not a hater...good tone, however, if I may put in a critique..watch the intonation in your bends and vibrato. That's really the key to sounding like him. he's a jedi master at bends and vibrato. So, keep up the good work! Enjoy yourself.
flaegin 1 year ago 19
@flaegin This is what I was gonna say. Good playing, but a few bends went a little sharp. DG's all about the subtle playing.

Wow...

People spend so much money for gear to sound and like somebody they are not.
People should try and develop their own sound instead of copying someone else.

@helpdonate1 Sound information. Excuse the pun.
ckolonko 1 year ago

USAF300 1 year ago
@USAF300 Gee USAF300 thanks for clearing that issue up for all of us. We all thought we were all watching Gilmour playing guitar for your sorry ass in his family room.... The owner of this video never claimed to play a good guitar. He is just sharing his passion with us. And you who is jealous of this guy's gear have no video of your own show for. Go back to playing with your paper airplanes kid.
mataceri 1 year ago
Its a favourite DG solo . beautifuly played and great to hear a younger player finding inspiration from a "slower" player. Looks a beautiful strat , hope it brings many years of happiness
How do the neighbours like the HIwatt!!! ???
ham60 1 year ago 2
So wait... you ummm... spent $5,000 on your guitar alone? For lord's sake tell me you make money playing that thing. Cause the Hiwatt AND the WEM cab is more expensive than what may be necessary to get the tone you're looking for.
BUT! Good stuff none the less.
marchenoir44 1 year ago
your backing track is pitched, you need to tune your strings a little bit higher than normal, thats why it sounds like your bends are off, try that, guarantee it will sound better, i had the same problem...

how do u have a David Gilmore inspired gear yet have no whammy bar?

If he was playing with a Strat/Les Paul it would be easier, Teles aren't great for bends.
j8mm3r 1 year ago
@j8mm3r
Oh yeah I see you really know what you're talking about
Considering that Tele's aren't bad for bends and he doesn't even play one EVER in the vid
StreeTRacR008 1 year ago
@StreeTRacR008 Oh yeh you're right my bad, I disagree though Strats are far easier to bend than Tele's due to the action and floating bridge. But I think this guy would be better off with either lighter strings or to play the start of it higher up the fretboard.
j8mm3r 1 year ago
@j8mm3r
Hahahaa, all right yeah I did come off as bitchy then, sorry about that
I see you do know what you're talking about
But yeah, the beginning of this solo is odd with those lower fret bends, but thats how he plays em I believe
It's all preference about how the strings bends...I mean look at the Communication Breakdown solo lmao, on a Tele
StreeTRacR008 1 year ago
@StreeTRacR008 All good my man, teach me to half look at a video before pressing the comment button (=
j8mm3r 1 year ago
lmao, it is a strat, not a tele. I would know, I have a strat myself.

hello, rick,
first of all: i like it very much !!! very nice. please tell me which effects you did use for this solo sound ?
bustybasti09 1 year ago
nice gear ! but you play like my dog... you must improve your banding and play more naturally
pietrorock 1 year ago 4
You must improve your spelling. Bending is spelt with an "E"
speedfreak808 1 year ago
@speedfreak808 sorry but I'm not english...I'm Italian!
pietrorock 1 year ago
@speedfreak808 : Either way, his bending needs improvement. It's off key and I'm afraid that's more a matter of good ears than technique only. The Gilmour sound is there alright... my compliments!
