Goodness, after all these long years, this song is awakening nuff nostalgia of those "Frontline" days...I have been violating the replay button for the past 2 weeks.....Bwoy, I'm so bad!
I am trying to get episodes of Empire Road for a community arts festival in Handsworth, Birmingham from the 23rd - 25th July 2010. Been in touch with the BBC (they had copies until recently) and the BFI with no joy. Any help/contacts would be appreciated.
Me and my mate used to love this series. Fantastic tv. We were gutted the BBC pulled it as it was getting too popular and they were teriffied that they were creating a black Coronation Street, tragic. Loved Norman Beaton and Sharkie and Walter !!!
@loveresurrection O my god, i am at the very beginig of this clip, the 1 with the pink jumper and afro. I remember this being filmed at the old itv studios in Birmingham.
when will things get betta down empire rd, give thanks for a multiracial community, that's the way the father wants it to be... sour fish, yam n banana, just like jamaica (fiji)
we work all day, thats the way of empire rd, use ur brain if u want to gain - chapati, rice and beans....
they sing about these things cause we were taken as slaves (our forefathers hands and legs were shakled in chains), but jamaician african's music take revenge with music.
by whose definition? You dance for the approval of others then? To dance 'right' rather than just how you feel? I'd rather see someone lying on the floor pretending to fly a kite than some fool doing the macarena. Music like this isnt about people doing anything 'right' - its just about people doing, people doing and maybe, people having love.
I didnt grow up in a multicultural community but I know I got a lift to school with a west indian family when we coudnt afford a car my dad also taught me to respect gay people which can be difficult for the afro carribean community I LOVE MY DAD for that respect to everyone he taughtme.Peace.
I was a white punk rocker in 1979 (16 years old) but thanks to the rock against racism movement my horizons where broadened and I got to see some great reggae acts on the same stages and this music shaped my future attitudes and life thanks for posting.
First time listening to this song ever and i love it. Is the title of the song Empire road ? I realize it's 30 years old but hey, Good reggae is timeless.
love that show but come on now you know the the bbc only give the black community the smallest crumbs they can then tell them there more on the way.R.I.P Norman Beaton.
Wow. This tune is like a soundtrack to the lives of second generation Africa-Caribbean's. It has that melancholy feel, but the lyrics speaks of optimism although tempered by a real sense of displacement. Perhaps these are the main ingredents for Lover Rock. Reggae UK-style at its best. Tuff tune, tuff video.
Its so unfortunate that the 'black' programmes are never repeated or brought back even despite public demand. Choice FM have been campaigning for ages to bring the real Mc Coy back and the BBC still wont show it... Why is Only Fools and Horses can be shown all day every day on UK Gold, but Empire Road can't be shown!!? P.S Before you all start jumping up and down there is nothing wrong with Only Fools and Horses but ALL DAY, EVERY DAY? come on...!
Yes there was a series in it was Victor Romeo Evans aswellif im rite i thought Norman Beatie was in the series called the Fosters if i'm wrong plz let me no ok cheers. Bless
They repeated te 1st and last (Wedding), episode on TV some years back. Being a miserable 48year old, I now hate the TV producers for not bringing it back, I'd love to seeit on DVD. Oh, well. A man can dream!! Pity about Norman Beaton. Clever bloke!
Very rare!! I belive there was a TV series called Empire Road which was filmed in Birmingham around 1980. This song was used as the theme tune. or am I imagning it all ?? Can anyone confirm ?

Wasn't there a TV series called 'Empire Road' ? I think it aired briefly in the late 70s, starring Norman Beaton playing a grocery store owner.

Blackbeard Bovell is on bass with beard. The master mind behind Matumbi. His latest project is the talented Bobby Kray.
