Indio was guy named Gordon Petersen. The original version is 1000% better. From wikipedia "Peterson re-emerged into the public when he filed a lawsuit in December 2009 against Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, alleging infringement resulting from usage and alteration of "Hard Sun" without Peterson's permission, although Universal Music, Peterson's former label, granted permission. Vedder recorded the song for the Sean Penn-directed movie Into the Wild."
Revision one: A&M music granted the rights to Universal Music. You were almost right. Someone should have called up Gordon Peterson just for good ettiquete before he heard it on the radio. He must of sold the song outright back in the day with no roaylties or licence. The music biz is savage like that. Make sure to get good management all of you up and comers.
this isn't "better" than the original. It's simply true to form and honest in his way. I usually prefer the original, the version sung by the writer, and I do here. But Eddie's version is just fine.
I just saw Eddie live last night for the first time as part of his Aussie tour. I just can't describe how fantastic this man is. So awesome, so brilliant in every way. It was a total love-fest, and with the fabulous audience, it just felt spiritual. He finished with this song and we all went wild! Man, I will never get over that concert! Eddie is GOD!
when you listen to this song it makes me sad to think that all those people who listen to all that pop garbage, like timberlake, ga ga, beiber, rap and crap who will never get to hear this or appreciate truley great music like this artist
Sorry folks but Indio does a much cleaner and smoother version. It flows so perfectly where as Eddies version is raspy and broken But i will give him credit where credit is due...He does the ending justice with the repetitive chorus
Something about Eddie, they way he approaches the songs he covers, they always turn out better than the original. And that's not saying the originals aren't great too, but from this, to Love Reign O'er Me, to You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, and the list goes on, Eddie and Pearl Jam always seem to knock it out of the park.
@meeuzik I don't know about "always" turning out better than the originals... this one, yes, I agree... But... their cover of "Mother" on Jimmy Fallon was ghastly...
@PringDaddyPring Agreed on the "Mother" cover. Eddie's getting older, his pipes definitely aren't as powerful as before. That's why I'm so glad there's youtube to watch all their stuff from years gone past. =)
The movie in which it appears, Into the Wild, credits "All original songs written and performed by Eddie Vedder" in the title sequence which is VERY misleading.
It very much gives the impression that Vedder wrote this and two other covers that appear in the film. Couple that with the fact that most people take everything that they see at face value because they are too lazy to research anything and it quickly becomes a "fact" in our urban lore that Eddie Vedder wrote "Big Hard Sun".
It's not so much about laziness. The movie goer would just assume it's true if the place it so prominently in a medium that is seen by millions of people and at least a couple of blood thirstly lawyers.
absolutly Eddie
