we are working with solaris 11 since 2010 (dec), with no complaints. After the upgrade released at nov-2011, all is working as usual stable.
We have installed GNU dev platform (C++) and the java 7 platform (SE and EE), our glasfish server 3.x is up to date, we apply some updates to open office, firefox, thunderbird and vbox, but the os is working just fine.
Maybe mysql server is some versions old but for development purposes that works just fine. Regarding vm's linux and win are working ok!
@JPOtalk but how come it uses allmos the same repositorys as for example Ubuntu and looks and feals lilke Linux? tell me cuse i cant figure it out, wikipedia says its unix-like...
@KaxiLaxi AIX is unix-like, BSD is unix-like, HP UX is unix-like, but they all come from the same single unix os and they are all unix. Unix is trademarked so you can't call Solaris unix due to lawlsuits.
@KaxiLaxi Thats just the Front end Desktop that has been made look a LOT like Linux tbf, which isn't a bad thing tbh... .However, Whats underneath, while similar to Linux, is in fact, very much different. It's more robust, stable, has advanced features like Dtrace, Virtual O/S instances built in, ZFS, SMF and is superior to Linux in almost every way, from an admin point of view: -)
@dziltener I'm not playing with Ubuntu!!! I'm "PLAYING" with Windows! I'm a developer. If you want to....play with your baby solaris... It doesn't matter at all becuse it sucks and it doesn't do anything better then the other operating systems.
@PJ123MJ you do realize that any os could use gnome if they wanted. Like if you install BSD also supports gnome and you couldn't tell linux and BSD apart by only going through some gnome menus. And oracle decided to use gnome the difference is in the kernel not in the desktop environment.
@PJ123MJ it is a java desktop which uses gnome the orginal nongnome java desktop was similar to windows xp it even had the lauch icon for your menu in the same spot
