Lovely version. Loved the way you can see the guys all really getting into it and feeling the lyrics. A classic song sung in an unconventional way that still makes it sound classic. Bravo a tutti....Westminster!
The moves are how the singer makes a vital connection between his body-the instrument he uses to make the sound-and the emotions in his heart. It's part of the whole delivery mechanism. Does Yo-Yo Ma sit still while he plays Bach? I cannot imagine why they didn't win. W. sing the way god intended when he thought up the human voice.
I'm an old barber shopper, and I too think that the hand gestures were just a bit over the top. Yes, you will use gestures in a quartet , but in a chorus setting, it is just unsettling.
Now that being said, the performance was OUT STANDING!
This beautiful song was sung to me on my 80th birthday on vacation with 17 immediate family. I shall never forget their carefully rehearsed chorus and dancing with my husband as Maurice sang the words. This was as good as it gets. Lucky me. Elaine
"Someday, when I'm awfully low, when the world is cold, I will feel aglow just thinking of you, and the way you look tonight ..."
In that magic moment when a man beholds the countenance of that special woman and she imprints upon his heart and mind forever, THIS is the song and THESE are the lyrics...
Thank you, Westminster. Jerome Kern wrote this song while listening to this performance in his soul.
Clearly superior!!!! Oh My Gawd!!! This will hold up 10 or 20 years from now!!!! SUMUHMUHBITCH!!!! I'm wiping my eyes! Damn it! I WANT TO SING THIS!!!
Oh wow~ I'm supposed to be learning the women's version of this (which is pretty much exactly the same) and it's nice to hear how it sounds all together~
He's there, singing bari. So is the baritone. At the time they were in another quartet called Entourage. MSF(tenor, bass) + Entourage(lead, bari) = The Crush.
Ich haette auch auf Deutsch schreiben koennen, aber der Meinung bin ich, dass es nicht besonders hoeflich ist, eine Fremdsprache zu verwenden! Warum nicht Englisch?
If you want a permanent copy of this song and others, go to the WESTMINSTER CHORUSweb site and order their CD. You will not be dispappointed. Maybe one day they will put out a DVD of their performances. One can hope.
barbershop is very animated. the idea of the movement is to emphasize the emotion in the music. You will see this sort of movement in any barbershop performance be it chorus or quartet.
I'm a member of the ambassadors of harmony and there are plenty things i see that the judges are looking for that this chorus didnt do. These guys are really good but if they had that prob i see fixed they would have won gold.
This was absolute magic. You guys had that entire audience in the palm of your hands. You took the gold that night, you'll just pick up your medals next year, ;)
Simply superb.

Fantastic; takes the usual boredom out of formal, no move, Barber Shope choruses.. the sound is great and the motion adds to the interpretation.
judgejoe77 2 years ago 2
thye would have come second coz they had too many hand gestures that just looked out of place.....the SOUND tho is awesome!!!!!
Mangi132 2 years ago
I disagree. The movement was heart felt and fitted well the piece. For barbershop, it was incredible and this is what I want my chorus to do!
I think they got second because of the backflips and juggling in their uptune. They have amazing sound and such energy! That is their big drawcard!

Its quite haunting, but in a good way. All those male voices and women. Its great!

There aren't any women in male barbershop chorus or even in quartets. The women sing under Sweet Adelines and NO MALES>
