Frank Zappa was the George Carlin of rock and roll. I miss them both. They were extremely intelligent, funny and talented, and called out reality as they saw it, politically correct or not. GOT TO MEET MR.ZAPPA....AT U.C.L.A. WHEN I WAS A KID AT 17 YEARS OLD..HE WAS THE KOOLEST KAT BACK THEN..THAT WAS IN 1972...YOUR MUSIC IS SO MISSED!!! R.I.P.
This is back when Letterman was funny and wasn't such a liberal jackass. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention live at the Filmore East is one of the best storytelling album of all time.
i also saw Zappa playa Zappa and dweezel has taken music that was somewhat not commercial and has honed it into some of the most refined and more publicly acceptable music that i see what i hope may be a comeback with franks music as we all so very much love it and also love FZ the man the myth !
Dweezil says he has never used drugs, smoked a cigarette or had a drink of alcohol because of the positive influence of his mom and dad. Heard it on NPR at three in the morning. The music was a drug sonny boy, sorry to be the one to tell you. I tripped on Dylan and Townes Van Zandt way before I smoked my first joint or the fifty thousand after that. People remember Frank for being Frank, the music was secondary to our love for Frank.
FZ is talking about Prince Philip (who said he wants to reincarnate as Ebola 'to help with the overpopulation problem'), and also about Obama's Science Czar (John Holdren) who wrote a book ("ECOSCIENCE") 30 years ago which is, among other evils, all about how to secretly poison the public water supply to cause sterilization (this is real, see zombietime . com / john_holdren for pics and quotes of this astounding book). FZ is also talking about Vacaville prison, where CIA injects convicts.
My favorite poster I had when I was attending university: Was Mr. Zappa poking fun at fraternities. Frank was sitting on a toilet and the caption read "Frank Zappa Crappa".
@WAR You have hit the nail on the head.Saw Zappa plays Zappa in Indy last year and was just totally blown away. The masters son playing the Apostrophe album note for note.
Frank Zappa always seems to straddle the line between the serious and the obsurd and I never know how to take him, but he sure got a lot of milage out of it, what ever it is...
i started out being a huge Zappa fan back as a kid with Lumpy Gravy as my teething ring... I miss Frank so much... I always knew where he was coming from (a bit of a concern to many...) lol! THEY missed out!!!!!!!!!

@lesterclaypool1 Left, Right.... Pretty much two sides of the same, ever swiftly moving towards complete and total destruction of the nation and much of the world, bent, dirty, shitty coin. One side censors out of "bleeding heart" sympathizing, the other out of conservative Christian values (Whether for show or not). They both suck off and get sucked off by the corporate shylocks, banksters and anyone with perceivable "power".
Letterman is a @#!%? for brains ..He dosen't even know he is talking to one of the greatest Musical artist of all time..Even His band leader knows it cuase they all learned from him...Thanks Frank for putting up with a putz like DAVE heis a queebie..

Never did like Frank Zappa. Don't know him as a person, and I obviously never will. Maybe he's a genius, but I can't hum one of his tunes. Not sure why he played music, I'm sure he loved it. The word irritating comes to mind. A dude who just wanted to be different, and succeeded beyond expectation. If I sat behind him in class at school, I'm sure I would have bounced a pencil off the back of his head. Peace.
@vexamatic - I don't think you've really heard much Zappa music to base your opinion on. Some of his early stuff is irritating but some of his later music is very melodic. I suggest you listen to "Broadway the Hardway." That album pokes a lot of criticism at the politicians & TV evangelist's from the 80's. The opening track, "Elvis Has Just Left the Building" is very funny. "Stolen Moments leading into "Murder by Numbers" with Sting is awesome & "Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk" is great too!
@vexamatic -Oh, and one more thing... Zappa was not only successful in Rock & Roll circles, he was successful in Jazz circles, classical music circles and even chamber music! He was a composer, a conductor and an AMAZING guitar player, even teaching people such as Steve Vai how to play.. I don't think Zappa's goal was to be different, I think he just stood apart from the norm... and let's face it, the norm is boring. Give him a chance and I bet you'll be HUMMING in no time at all! ; )
@flyinwalenda I'll tell you this much... I'd rather fall off the "left" cliff, than to stand on top of the mountain with a bunch of fascists who pat themselves on the back for winning a rigged game and call themselves the "religious" right, while doing everything their Jesus told them NOT to do. Let's all go vote for the guys who serve only the top 1% and believe that money is more important than humanity. That makes sense. Dave uses his brain, so it's hard for servile idiot righties to get him.
@lesterclaypool1 I've heard that rhetoric before. It's absolutely insane. Fascism and socialism are mutually exclusive... they are totally opposite... the Nazis were fascist, and yes at first they sold their movement as something that seemed somewhat socialist, but that was just propaganda. In reality, they were TOTALLY fascist. I'm not sure what you are saying about taking things to committee. Could you please elaborate?
who are you idiots bringing religion into this. Zappa was what zappa is. Nothing sad about him. Great musician, very cool human being and Dave has always been great. You don't like them, that's fine, doesn't change a thing.
@Lonesomeswan I think hes just fine with his maker, and the only thing i know for SURE,............is he knows more about it than me and you...............
@1TheTisim All kidding aside when you look at his last couple of healthy years, it certainly seems like he was moving closer and closer to political activism and I'm sure that he was gearing up for some sort of stand before he was diagnosed with cancer. But as I see it the world wouldn't have been ready for him anyway, too intelligent and too radical for all the fascists in charge.
And Gandhi saved millions of lives if I'm not mistaken. I'm tired of this whole shutting down thing. I say open up the fucking gates in the asylums. Everything is possible and they're not just saying that. I saw it in my own mind and I'm certain of it. Frank was a father to any thinking person. He was an enlightened person. once a man casts of the restricting patterns of behavior he can do anything. There are no more limitations today as there were in the 70's.
Maybe we'll find some guy who knows how to use the internet.
Oh and cancer is made up. If people were nicer to each other we wouldn't even have that. So the real cure is in behavior. It would be good if someone finds a mechanical way to cure it. but why don't they concentrate on the more important things first? The real answer is that no one cares. They don't look at it in the more supreme aspect. That's all there is to it. You get one person who actually gives a fuck and miracles can happen.
Too bad he wasn't president. He actually wanted to go for it. Only the act itself would be a wonderful and encouraging thing for the world to see. Also because he was already a known figure for being a sincere talker in public. If I ever see such a thing I won't be able to stop crying. Frank is Like John Lennon are kind of alike. But Lennon was a real waster. He was too "Dreamy" and didn't have a good grip on reality. And at that time it was harder to do anyway I guess.
I don't think he made it up to just talk,he's making really heavy commenting,if your'e not completly clueless.I think FZ was very serious about the play. He's satarizing,FZ is a social critic. Can't you see how pissed off he is at stupid ppl or the ones pulling the wool over stupid ppl's eyes? This may be over alot of folks heads. If you aren't totally clueless, you can see just how sharp FZ really is.FZ you rocked!
he actually just made it up for fun to talk about, thats why i love him hahaha, doesn't take anything seriously, note the idiocy of the play hahahahaa
Every comedian wants to be a musician (Sam Kineson), every musician wants to be a comedian (Justin Timberlake). Frank Zappa is perhaps the only one to have done them both successfully, and i mean REALLY fuckin successfully. I mean really, i'm here dying at this interview and afterwards i can listen to "Keep it Greasey" off of Joe's Garage and be completely fuckin mindblown, love you Zappa, fuck you prostate cancer :)
I love this guy ! He is my mentor I write / record / produce music. on you tube osamas dead song bing bong live . very Zappesk ,I saw him 1980 on Halloween night for my birthday . It was my first concert , front row mat I add . BING BONG !
What a genius, I saw him in Boston when I studied at Berklee and after the show I ran behind the Limo to catch a glimpse and a wink from this amazing human being. I didn´t catch either or because I almost collapsed from exhaustion, coudn´t catch up. He never did drugs, hated them, I miss him.
@zackhanscom G'damn right Letterman gives a shit...its his show. He has a long history of promoting bands or artists that he likes. Do you think Warren Zevon came on Dave's show to perform songs from his last album because CBS said so, do you think Pearl Jam performs regularly on Letterman because CBS tells them to, did anyone else let Andy Kaufman perform on their show? Did Johnny Carson do Leno? If you look into the history of David Letterman a little you will realize how wrong you are.
Frank IS a true artist. I was fortunate that I had an older brother who gave me the gift of FZ in 1972 when I was 11 years old. The radio pop songs I loved suddenly paled the moment I heard Cleetus Awreetus Awrightus emerging from my brother's very Hi-Fi system (for the time). Every instrument and voice was larger and and more tactile than anything I knew as music. In 1979 I finally went to see Frank live at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby PA with 3rd row center aisle seats. Zappa fans...
@soyounoat Im lucky i had a dad who introduced me to real music, im 19 and Frank Zappa is one of my favorite musicians, he was so far ahead of his time...and as far as im concerned still is, modern rock is nothing compared to the genius of Frank. I wish i would have had a chance to see live.
I love Zappa and I'm not a PC kinda guy, but it seems like the characters, (visually and Zappa's description of the musical,) would be considered 'racist' in 2012.
That being said.....wish I could have seen it.

@SCRex0472 His show might be tollerable IF he dumped the moron that has an obnoxious noise like "ahhhhh" from the side line. 'cLiCk'
ISamuelII 7 months ago
@SCRex0472 you think he gives a shit? he gets whoever the network gives him.
zackhanscom 6 months ago
@zackhanscom G'damn right Letterman gives a shit...its his show. He has a long history of promoting bands or artists that he likes. Do you think Warren Zevon came on Dave's show to perform songs from his last album because CBS said so, do you think Pearl Jam performs regularly on Letterman because CBS tells them to, did anyone else let Andy Kaufman perform on their show? Did Johnny Carson do Leno? If you look into the history of David Letterman a little you will realize how wrong you are.

That unpleasant background echo you hear is reverberations in the void left by FZ 's death.

I love that the play is so bizarre that it sounds like Frank's making this whole thing up to fuck with David.
