How much longer would those hoppers marked "XXX" be used till? Very much they look like the 70 tonners that even steam power once pulled. In a world of bethgons the ability to see even a 100 ton 3 bay is getting harder to witness on the rails. Nice catch of an earlier time there.
@tarmac2001 Most had been scrapped by 1985. They were painted with the "XXX" markings so that they would not be interchanged, because the receiving railroad would scrap them.
i just turned 40 and remember most of this! whoever said there needs to be a time machine was exactly right, because these shots had CHARACTER! Not like todays cookie cutter, all the trains look the same. might as well be all amtrak units.... and all the cars labelled xxx are being sent for scrap. you dont see that kind of thing anymore either!
Close...the cars marked "XXX" were still used regularly in service, but were not permitted to leave Chessie System rails due to their age (40 years?) exceeding federal requirements for freight cars in interchage service.
I'm 26 and i remember seeing lots of Chessie and even some old B&O locomotives in Younstown Ohio on the old B&0 New Castle Sub. And alot of those old dawgs ended up down south in North Carolina. Those days are long gone:(
So many American Railroads had bay window cabooses with no cupola, in Canada CP and CN cabooses were mostly middle cupola and the CP Rail ones i miss the most, cause they were yellow
Come to West Virginia if you want to see Chessie System. There is a tourist railroad that has an original Chessie System GP9 with its original number and new paint.
I wish the old Chessie System was still around....i'm a HUGE railfan...but it makes me sad, because this is before my time. I'm only 15, I have always dreamed of seeing one of these in real life....if only i was around during the good ol' days....
ive been there to see them in person and im 25. Grew up in Alabama where you saw alotta Chessie painted SDs pullin autoracks and coal drags. its a lovely sight and i miss seeing those old dawgs.
NICE, I remember all that and more from the 60's on up. Rode the Chessie steam trains through there b4 CSX bought Chessie. I wish CSX would have steam train rides. Someone still goes through point of rocks from balto using steam, i find bits of coal, just up there last week. No coal along the Metropolitain line to Wash.
These were the days to be railfanning!! Chessie paint schemes-and cabooses! Or, is that cabeese??

It's a good thing you filmed this, I'm modeling Chessie/Seaboard, and this train tells me exactly what coal hoppers I need!
