@perfuzz Sorry, I should've asked you for permission to use a distortion pedal. My bad. You'll be happy To know I no longer own the amp or pedal. Maybe you'll sleep better at night now?
How would you compare 'fender twin + pedal overdrive' and drive channel from an amp like, for instance, bogner shiva (or any other amp that has a good OD channel)? 'cause I love fender clean, but I'm afraid that it isn't really possible to get that full overdrive tone with fender and OD/distortion pedal.. Am I wrong?
@luyop I gigged with and had decent luck with that Twin and assorted distortion pedals, but it wasn't quite as good as a good amps distortion channel. Nobody in the crowd new and on at least a few gigs, it sounded incredible. Depended on the room.
hey man, i just got the exact new fender twin. i love the clean, but am rather disappointed with the distortion because it has this little fizzy aspect to it. you however dont have this at all, are you running any other pedals in the video other than the purple plexi? if that pedal is the answer i need to get one, i like heavier distortion but i also love classic fender tone.
@drover54 What pedal are you using for distortion? I don't have this rig anymore, but I thought some pedals sounded great with the Twin. For example, I was using an HBE overdrive pedal for light drive, this Purple Plexi 800 for med/high gain, and a Krank Distortus Maximus for modern heavier tones. Sounded great to me!
To be quite honest this is the first decent review I've seen on an overdrive pedal. I've seen so many reviews where there is a fucking TWAT using an overdrive or distortion pedal with a top of the range marshall amp, why the fuck do you need these pedals with a decent Marshall?? Also when testing the pedal with a Marshall, how on earth can you tell in the review if it is purely the pedal that is producing the sound. Marshall's sound pretty wicked anyway. There are some stupid reviews on here
I listened to so many reviews on these pedals. Satchurator, Steve Vai Jemini pedal, Fulltone OD, tubescreamers, the list was endless. Satchurator and Jemini pedals sounded just like the artists. I prefer a pedal with a bit more flexibility. I hate those signature pedals, just paying for the name. I take it the black version of the plexi 800 pedal is the same spec as the purple pedal, just a different colour? Can't wait to get the pedal and blow the wax out of some ears at the next gig..lol
Can't stop listening to this video, blown away by this pedal. Nice review mate and I like the playing. Sounds like a Valen riff, I can't think of the song. Love my Fender hot rod amp but it doesn't cut the mustard with Sweet Child of Mine, Back in Black and Paranoid. This pedal really does kick ass, that sounds spot on for an AC DC type sound. It does sound more like a vintage or classic rock sound but I suspect with a bit of adjustment and a distortion pedal you could get a Metallica sound?
Hey thanks for your advice, much appreciated. When running an overdrive and distortion box into the amp input, in what order should I run the pedals, should it be the distortion before the overdrive or other way round? Also I have an MXR micro amp pedal, how should I be running this pedal. Should it go in the amp input and if so what order should it be in the chain? Any help greatly appreciated. I'm pretty crap with effects but I'm learning fast. Thanks
In general, folks like to run pedals like OD, distortion, and wah into the front of the amp and pedals like delay, reverb, and chorus in the effects loop. It all depends on where the drive is generated.
Some effects sound better before the 'drive" and others sound better after. If you're using your amps distortion, running pedals in the loop are after the drive. If you're running clean on the amp, you can run everything in front and some pedals before/after the od/distoriton pedals.
Thanks, I did check out the Distortus Maximus pedal by Krank but it left me cold. The Purple Plexi sounds way better to me. Ordered my Purple Plexi from the states and can't wait for it to arrive. Fucking love this review because it is actually using the type of amp I will be using with the pedal. Okay my amp is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp but it is very similar to this amp. I did read somewhere that if you put an overdrive pedal in the FX loop, it can damage the components in your amp?
Congrats! It's a GREAT pedal! I've never heard that putting an OD/Distortion pedal in the loop will damage an amp. I can't see how it would, though.
But... OD and Distortion pedals are absolutely without a doubt made to be run into the amp input, not in the loop. You can try it, but I can't imagine it sounding good that way.
Oh my god, is that really just connected to the clean channel on the Fender Twin between the guitar and amp. Is it my imagination or is this pedal making the tubescreamer look like shit. From what I can hear, it makes the tubescreamer sound like crap. Is this demo a trick or is it really that pedal that is producing that amazing rock sound. I have a Fender Hot Rod deluxe and I just want to get a sound that kicks butt. I play anything from beatles to metallica, can this pedal do it? thanks
Is this better than an Ibanez Tube Screamer? Can anyone help, I just want to overdrive my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp. Overdrive, distortion, call it what the fuck you like. I just want it to sound loud and mean for rock. Fucking difficult as I play anything from beatles to Metallica. Am I asking too much or is there such a pedal that can do all I'm asking. I don't care how much it costs, just want it to kick butt. Do I need a new amp? Do I connect the pedal between the guitar and amp?
An Ibanez Tube Screamer is a whole other thing. It's an OD pedal (very light distortion if you want to call it that) that has a midrange hump to it. It's not "heavy" sounding at all into a clean channel on an amp.
It works well for blues like that. You could also use it to slam the distortion channel on your amp to bump up the gain alot. But for all out distortion into a clean amp, the Tube Screamer can't even compare to the Purple Plexi for higher gain tones.
Sounds very Charles Trenet !

@SgtThump - No it's ok, I'll let it pass this time.

So you buy a 900$ amp known as one of the cleanest amps in tube history just to buy some extra pedals to get some überdistortion. Right..?
perfuzz 8 months ago
@perfuzz
Yeah, you can get the cleanest cleans and the dirtiest dirt. Now go back to your basement.

@WoWintosh - I wish I could do that, but I don't seem to have it in me to get out of the limelight...

Your getting some fun sound out of vintage Twin. Thats usually hard to do! Especially to get the "right" kind of saturation to play hard rock.

LOL, no tricks! That's just the Purple Plexi straight into the Twin (the amp only has clean - no distortion on the amp.)
The pedal has a high gain Marshall type of tone to it.
You may want to check out the Krank Distortus Maximus for more modern heavy tones. That's a great pedal!

i received my plexi800 clone and i think it will pawn the tubescreamer even at minimal gain setting. this pedal is a very crunchy high gain pedal.
