wouldnt trade the old big cams for anything...except an electronic detroit series 60...only down side is timing the mf'n follower boxes (on the big cam).
@alex189100 i can tell by the aftercooler and the oil cooler.... there's other ways of differentiating, but from the video thats how you can tell. i know the big cam 4 blocks are different also...
A supercharger has two intersecting rotors that work together to displace air. A turbocharger has one vane or turbine working on its own to compress air.
@brolyavocados439 incorrect!! there is such a thing called a centrifugal supercharger AKA procharger its the compressor side of a turbo and a pulley and gear reduction on the other side. the supercharger you are thinking of is a roots type
trust me i hate the 2 stroke detriots. i had a 6V92 in a MCI tour bus and everything went wrong. it also blows blue smoke if the turbo is bad. cuz the turbo uses pressurized oil to keep it cool and when the bearings go bad on them the oil just burns because its not being distributed properly in the bearings
@badboyy21 ty capt obvious...any turbo will leak oil into the hot exhaust if blown. its common knowledge. so because you blew a simple turbo, you dis the entire engine.
@caniwitech Turbo, "blower" Roots, centrifugal, etc.. are all superchargers. I think you meant that they (Detroits) use the Roots type supercharger. ;)
@Thrawnization Turbo's getg their name from the word 'turbine' as in the exhaust turbine in a turbocharger. . WHile they are all forced induction, turbo's are not classes as superchargers. But hyes, my comment was simply stating that 2 stroke diesels used superchargers, not turbos.
@caniwitech Search Wiki for turbocharger ;) Also: not all two stroke diesels use mechanical forced induction, some do use turbine superchargers, and while most require forced induction to run, some do not. For the most part, however, you are correct, usually it is the Detroit two stroke diesel that is encountered, which uses a Roots type supercharger
@Thrawnization Wiki info is worth what you pay for it. Generally speaking, an air compressor driven by the engine;s exhausta via a turbine, is called a turbo, while one driven by the engine's crank shaft via a belt is a supercharger. A blower driven by the engine via a belt that looks like a turbo's compressor side, like a procharger, is still considered a supercharger. That is the accepted difference. You are implying that both are means of forced induction, in which you are correct.
@caniwitech I'm aware that a turbo is called a turbo due to it's using a exhaust gas driven turbine to compress the air. Unless you can cite a reputable source to prove me wrong that turbochargers are not superchargers then I'm afraid I'll have to disagree. :) "Turbo" and "turbocharger" are just slang terms for turbosupercharger.
@Thrawnization Ok. Your right. I'm an idiot. I had no intention of starting a silly argument. We are all aware that turbos would be classed as superchargers, i was simply stateing that generally they are not refered as such. it's easier to explain the differnece between them by using differnt names, but your right, they are both superchargers. I consede the point, and apologise to you for the inconvenience.
@sindinicon13 ever see a freshly rebuilt diesel engine running? besides the smell of paint, there is oil burning off inside the engine and out. no matter the engine i rebuild i always dump lots of oil into the cylinders. it will smoke for awhile but by the time the rings seat its usually cleared up.
I see it is already blowing white smoke right after an overhaul. I once read somewhere that white smoke isn't good when it comes to deisel engines, is this true? Does this make it a flaw in the design of the BC4?
I put one of these engines on a old GALLION road grader. had to use a 290 oil pan the 400 pan was too deep/sump wrong. for clearance over the rear axles. That man has the only roadgrader in Texas with JAKE BRAKES!!!
Naw man I work for myself.... and I'm not brand specific either, I ve worked on damn near everything ...The road grader was my hardest job , we were out in the middle of a field 5 miles from nowhere.. It broke down 3 yrs prior.. We used two front-end loaders doing a tandem lift to stab it to the transmission...Put the big K-Dub radiator on it too!!! hell the motor is so big we couldn't put the hood back on it cause of the air to water intercooler hahaha...
that is funny yeah at least u got it together that is all that counts.yeah i went to school for diesel and am looking for work the main reason i cna't find work is i don't have the tools they want me to have to do the job
Yea all the Dealerships are takin' work from me because I don't have a $10,000 scan computer but I still have my ears and eyes...I live in a Interstate town off of IH10 and the guy at the truckstop sends me alot of customers and I have all the farmers I work on their tractors too but even they are going electronic so I need that computer to keep up with the newer engines.....I'd rather work on a 3406B than a C-15 anyday....
You obviously don't know anything about truck engines. The Big Cam 4 was the biggest joke ever. My stepdad had an 89 t600 a with a big cam IV and it broke down a lot.
What kind of increase in duration etc does the big cam have?
Do u not loose low rpm torque or is it just extra lift?
I'm very interested in diesel cams as u cant go for really high rpm unless really finely balanced and strengthened so making a useful cam must be really hard?
