I kniw and study wolves there the 5th most intelligent and fatest animales ever where as the hyena is 11th and for speed 7th im studying dog ancesters so i know .
I'd have to disagree.... wolves are a pack animal with a higher intelligence. Sure maybe a few unlucky ones got hit by hyenas.... But I'd say that the Wolf would have the intelligence NOT to get into a fight where they were outnumbered. So if you had a Hyena that was outnumbered the Wolves would kill or just move on.... but one of each in a cage then I'd have to guess at the Hyena winning..... if you but them in a big enough pen where the Wolf could keep running then I'd put my money on the W

So given the hyenas are both smarter and much more physically powerful then wolves, even if the wolves had a bit of an advantage in numbers; if a large hyena clan bumped into a large wolf pack, and a all out fight broke out. The canines would lose.

Hyena bodies are also built to spin really fast so if the wolf is quick enough to bite the hyena from behind the hyena is just going to spin around and bite the wolf and kill it in 1 bite. A wolf is my favorite animal btw so im not just some hyena fan.
@999Wildcard grey wolf can get up to 175 where hyens are usly just under 155 pounds so being bigger is out. but i still think a hyena has a very god chance but so does the wolf...probly the most even match up yet.

@GIRsquad they are powerful, but they are also cowards, i saw 4 hyenas that would not attack a lioness that had been bitten by a cobra. she just laid on the shore of a lake and when ever one approached she would growl and they would run. i think she even killed one of them. i know once she recovered from the bite she went on a hyena killing campaign that ended an entire royal line of a clan and killed several others

Wolves are the second most successful predator after man. Before man, wolves inhabited nearly every corner of the globe. Hyenas were never that successful. Wolves are far more adaptable.

As for who would win in a fight, the hyena takes this. If you look at their skeletons side by side (as you can in the Natural History Museum of Paris), you'd see that the hyena is larger and WAY more robust

@GIRsquad Oh yea, enough hyenas will protect their kill from anything, but you have to look at a couple different factors, how many hyenas are there? how many lions are there and how hungry are they? I have seen hyenas run off lions, but the lions weren't that hungry and they were outnumbered 4 to 1

@luderudecrude Very true. If it was a pride of lions against one hyena, the lions would definitely win. I was only looking at a pride of lions and a clan of hyenas of about the same size. I guess it also depends on the breed of hyena, too

Wolves are the second most successful predator after man. Before man, wolves inhabited nearly every corner of the globe. Hyenas were never that successful. Wolves are far more adaptable.

PS: when Spotted hyenas lived in Europe they predated on wolves

@Tarbtano thats true m8 :D spotted hyenas are mutch stronger than wolfs :) cant understand people even belive wolfs can win.... leopards and cougars are about the same sice cougars prey on wolfs and hyenas fight leopars all the time and most of the fights they win :D

wolves easily. More endurance, more of a pack animal than even the hyena. Hyenas don't help each like wolves do. Wolves are the ultimate pack hunter. Hyenas are more intelligent, but teamwork triumps intelligence in this standoff. Easily.

Wolf packs in the wild only employ up to 3 different strategies, hyenas by comparison employ up to 12. Hyena clans also suffer far less injuries and losses then wolf packs

no big deal, of course, on this side a lone hyena does not mean much, but fights are much stronger, your body is more muscular than
the wolves, hyenas in their natural habitat only lose to the Lions, as leopards, cheetah and others are regularly defeated by the fierce and clever hyenas.

Why do people constantly go on about how wolves are supposedly smarter than hyenas? Spotted hyenas have been proven to be almost as intelligent as some primate species. I've never heard any biologist describe wolf intelligence by comparing it to that of primates.
As for who would win in a fight, the hyena takes this. If you look at their skeletons side by side (as you can in the Natural History Museum of Paris), you'd see that the hyena is larger and WAY more robust
