It's kind of funny how all the things from the "dark side of capitalism" were all also dependent on government actions. Plus, booms and busts are historically a result of governments and their stupid Keynesian policies.
I will listen to this one more time with your comments in mind, but it seems like you (or him) are sayin: yeah well, capitalism isnt perfect, but its the best we got so live with it.
Not to mention that a find it a SEVERE understatement to put off the inherently genocidal, inheernetly destructive nature of capitalism with a coupla "crooks and incompetents". I say the entire system was DESIGNED to fuck people over. You cant fix a system which works, imo-
@DJpopel you wrote, "He claims that our present system IS capatalism,. which I think is untrue-I believe we have long transpired into coroporate neo-fascism."
Err, his point is that Capitalism CAN and WILL get things wrong-- which is when you make corrections.... "perfect" Capitalism doesn't exist in real-life, or theory.
He's not saying bust periods are good, he's saying that's when we make corrections-- ALL systems need checks & balances cos every community has crooks and incompetents.
All contractors and related entities that profited from war did so as a result of an artificial demand. As soon as you you become aware of an intrinsic impulse toward bad behavior you can start to correct the problem.
ONLY GOVERNMENTS START WARS! Blackwater will never start a war and neither will any other private company. Why is it that the free market forever gets the blame for what governments do?
@christo930 Yeah. But private companies lobby don't they? The have good friends in high places. Always have, always will. We've known that since Eisenhower.
@Eaglesfaninca THis is one of the main reasons for limiting gov power. The fewer goodies and favors the gov has to offer, the less they can give away.
@christo930 Dick Cheney worked for Haliburton and it got them a lot of no bid contracts in Iraq. So you think private companies should now be able to declare war?
@Eaglesfaninca What makes you think I said that? What I meant was that if the military wasn't so big in the first place, there would be far less temptation to use it. If we would have needed a huge expansion of the military and a draft, Iraq wouldn't have happened. But with that giant military ALREADY in place, it becomes easier to go to war for the flimsiest of reasons.
@FascismFetishist Is it? Without music the world would be even more dull and dark, and what does music come from? People in generall, even if its a sell out industry, it gives people idols and dreams. Think with that pathetic brain of yours.
@Imhornydadcomeinside That's right, I didn't mention music, dumbass. I quoted Bloom on employers, which has nothing to do with music, and lamented the respect commanded by such an IDIOT. Then you leave a terribly pretentious reply to me that has nothing to do with the subject of my comment to which you're replying. Are you on drugs?
The main problem with OUR system of capitalism is the fact that politicians are legally ALOUD to be paid off by lobbyists with any amount of money. Separate capitalism from the government and allow it only outside of the government, or the government will not regulate the corporations effectively, because there will be incentive against it according to how effectively each corporations can pay off each state politician.
Howard Bloom has an amazingly huge ego. He says he helped start the hippy music. Seriously listen to this whole interview agauin. Almost everything he says is a boast.
@589216001 Stop being so jealous, you don't know what he has done, and you show weakness when you say that he is boasting because that indicates that you're somewhat irritated.
Saying that there are only a few bad apples in Capitalism is pretty disingenuous because not only is it not true, but it doesn't take more than a few bad apples to ruin an entire system.
Everyone says look at the United States to see why Capitalism works- Well I do! And it doesn't take long to notice all the resources being poured into unnecessary wars, exploited workers, incredibly impoverished areas, growing prison population, massive healthcare corruption, and huge concentrations of wealth.
@eternallord Hey! But we have our Cell Phones, 80 gigabyte Ipods, and Sparkling Apple juice with bendy straws - Nevermind the massive human rights violations in China that we help fund instead of condemning.
"In communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic."
No, you are outright lying. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn puts the figure at 66 million, it is NOT refuted.
And even if it was "fascists" who murdered innocent Soviet citizens in WWII, why, brilliant lefty, would you want to encourage a system which would attract these same types of people to commit these same types of atrocities AGAIN?
Oh, let's just cross our fingers and hope it doesn't happen again!
Alexander Solzhenitsyn wsa a novelist, not an historian. He made up things. He did not record facts or true events.
He was the son of a wealthy landowner who fought against the Soviets. His land was confiscated and turned into a commune. This explains his lifelong hatred for the Soviet Union and his willingness to lie to discredit communists.
He was also a religious fanatic who hated democracy and wished for Russia to be ruled by a Czar again.
I can agree with this guy that every economic system has its bad apples and I do like his talk about checks and balances, but I do maintain that the system currently in place is neither capitalist nor socialist. In my opinion, it's a system invented entirely by bad apples, one that I would call elitist.
The problem is the MBA degrees. They take the most brilliant minds away from doing actual work, and put them into finance, where they make money for people who are already rich, instead of inventing the next cellphone or computer or whatever.
That they are not, in most of the ways they pretend to and believe in, superior to the people they attempt to lord over. They are not of truly superior intelligence, for instance, and are of inferior morality, certainly.
Did I ask you 'meaning'? I'm sorry, ron; you just got an example of me suffering a momentary case of half-wit syndrome. When I first read your first comment to me, for some weird reason, I literally couldn't understand it. Now I look at it and it's obvious what you were saying - the 'elite' are really not 'elite'! Well anyway, well-said, my friend.
Lol. I come down with half-wit syndrome occasionally, along with can't-remember-what-I-was-planning-to-say-5-seconds-ago syndrome. I completely understand.
LOL, I am SO there. I get absent-minded and do stupid stuff like that WAY too often. I've always got my attention on some internal thought process and not fully on whatever mundane thing I am doing at the time.
Holy crap, have I been doing that one a lot over the last few days! I'll be preparing for my exercise routine, then I'll get lost in the la-la land of my imagination for almost a minute even and then I'll be like, "What the hell am I doin'? Oh yeah, diddle-daddling."
I loved his stance on capitalism. When he says that there is nothing wrong with the system, but there are criminals in every larger group of people and that's why you need check and balances. That was my highlight. It's very refreshing to hear this kind of voices from the US, as this is maybe the most sensible one.
You would think this would be obvious, but you'd be surprised how so many people see that as socialism (which they consider a heartbeat away from communism). But then again, most people don't know what capitalism or socialism is and because they don't they scare easily.
Exactly that is why I loved it. Because the people calling check and balances socialism are actually the naive ones, thinking that the system is not exploitable which it is. I still think that capitalism gives very good incentives to the individual and is therefore beneficial to a society, but it's just naive to think the system cannot be abused by criminals. Because they do not understand socialism, they don't understand why check and balances are not a slippery slope to communism.

I think he makes some valid points, but this man is coming from PR, so I deeply mistrust him:
He claims that our present system IS capatalism,. which I think is untrue-
I believe we have long transpired into coroporate neo-fascism.
WE ARE the roman empire atm, no doubt in my mind about that
Secondly, hes basically saying that the MAN MADE crash of 17xx was Ok, because HEY, we got soup kitchens out of it!
This seems to be his main argument and i reject the entire mindstate behind it.
