This sounds... Off. Like an equalizer is on or something. The snare sounds TOO overpowering compared to the bass and hat. (as in more than the master already did)
@LightningStickmanBob I'm guessing this guy did have to use an EQ in the drumtrack extracting process. I don't even know how to do it, but I'm sure he had to edit multiple sound channels of the track. But I do agree, the snare does sound a bit louder now that the other instruments are gone
Just to let people know being a fellow drummer myself. Playing double bass doesn't make you the best drummer in the world, well rounded technique does, Lars is alright at best, but he is no Brann Dailor, Tomas Haake, or Paul Bostaph.

He can play fast, but his timing was never really good. Lars is perhaps 'the worlds best worst drummer'. His style is both horrible and sloppy as it is unique and energetic. Somehow, he makes it work, even if he is a horrible drummer, and it matches the music strangely.

I'm convinced his snare has a sample added to it. While not so obvious in this song, on other songs on Ride the Lightning (Creeping Death for sure), Lars' snare tone changes (to the normal unprocessed drum sound) whenever he does a snare roll. During most parts where he is hitting the snare drum in 8th notes or slower, the sample is playing. I can't prove any of this, just how it sounds to my ears. Anyone else notice this? Wish I knew what kind of drum module/sampler Mr. Rasmussen was using!

They weren't big yet and to implant a sample onto a track in those days was only something that "big" bands had the use of. It's probably more a "guitar Hero" issue then anything else.
One of the engineers from either master or justice (i cant remember) came to our school a few years ago, he apparently had to go through and but a sample down for every snare hit because they weren't happy with the sound they got...
So, it is quite possible they use em for other albums too :)

@InfectiousGroov I'm fairly certain the files on Guitar Hero are compressed in some form, either mp3 or Ogg. Also, youtube really kills any sort of dynamic range in music.

Lars plays double bass fast as hell. If u wanna check it for yourself go to a live show. In the last Sonisphere on Barcelona i saw them and Lars was hittin the drums at lightspeed, with perfect double bass.

@2009JimmyPage That show was freaking awesome, hands down, they even played Metal Militia and Phantom Lord. Amazing setlist and amazing supporting bands, Gojira, Lamb, Down, Machine Head...awesome.

Damn, this is just great. For me, this is the best thing to come from Guitar Hero: separate tracks. Not that I despise Guitar Hero or something like that, I actually think it's pretty cool, I'm just not interested in the game itself. Lars is far from being one of the best drummers in the world, but he's probably my favorite, along with others that are far superior to him, such as Dave Lombardo and Ken Owen from Carcass. Its crazy how consistent lars' drum sound has been over the years, Like if you compare this track to some of the newer ones, it pretty much sounds like the same kit in slightly different rooms, maybe different reverbs. Th eonly difference is it sounds like the kick drum is mic'ed closer in these older tunes.

Its crazy how consistent lars' drum sound has been over the years, Like if you compare this track to some of the newer ones, it pretty much sounds like the same kit in slightly different rooms, maybe different reverbs. Th eonly difference is it sounds like the kick drum is mic'ed closer in these older tunes.

Absolutely, otherwise some people say that lars uses effect to make his drums sound better (soory, I'm french ^^).
Fuck it all, itsn't true: Metallica has done a concert at "the arènes de Nïmes" and I had the chance to be behind lars, and I saw perfectly his feet, and also when he plays the double bass, and someone say that he didn't play some parts. FUCK IT!!!! The bassdrum is just sur-mixed, and lars doesn't cheat!!!

i know! watch, look up Fight Fire With Fire Chicago 2009 and you'll see him doing double bass PERFECT. je parles francais un peu parceque j'ai 2 classes de francais en high school. hahaha, it was a long time ago but i remember some things.

Print error on like the first few hundred Ride The Lightning covers, they all have out with an evil green colour. I think it looks better.

there was a misprint with the press or some shit that made them green over in like france, and they only printed like 400 or 500 of these so theyre really rare.
